I'd say that some degree of repressed memory is probably common in all survivors. For myself, before starting my recovery I had memories of the abuse but they were only like I was watching a movie, as if it wasn't really me in them, but through the healing process feelings of what was happening while the abuse was going on were recalled and with them I started to reconstruct my identity. This was very painful but it helped diminish the disocciation that happened whenever the memories came to me before. I should also add that starting to remember the feelings associated with the memories triggered alot of flashbacks but I was told that this is common when just starting to deal with abuse in therapy.
Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
