we saw a lot of this when we were in Thailand - poor families who would sell a daughter - some as young as 10 - so that the rest of the family could have a better life. (what i later started to feel had been done to me.) they often sent them off to the city from a rural area - often pretended they did not know what kind of "work" the child was going to do.
We are often troubled, but not crushed;
sometimes in doubt, but never in despair;
there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend;
and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.
- Paul, II Cor 4:8-9
