i can sooo relate to this - with the exception of the cigar!

sometimes i think the pain i feel on another's behalf helps to heal my own pain or maybe make it more bearable.
We are often troubled, but not crushed;
sometimes in doubt, but never in despair;
there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend;
and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.
- Paul, II Cor 4:8-9

good stuff.

it is a feeling i get very often.
makes me think about all those people who have tried to help me in the past, but were unable to get through.

i was still listening to them.
even as i argued and cursed and denied.
i was still listening.

what they did for me was noticed, and appreciated.
even though i was unable to acknowledge their care,
i still accepted and received it.

often the big breakthroughs in my life came from finally surrendering to the good advice i had heard years before, that was still echoing in my ears.

i am sure your love for your friend is getting through.
i am certain it is being appreciated.

just be careful, and don't forget to protect yourself while attempting rescue.
we have a saying in first aid...
don't become the second victim.
you have to be a strong swimmer if you want to save someone else from drowning.
you need fire-proofing if you want to pull someone out of a burning building.

The most I cried ever in my life was over a friend, who's story mirrored mine so much, and being unable to help him.
I think it's so sad to see someone hurting and to want to fix it and to find yourself impossibly ill-equipped to fix them. It would be so nice to be able to carry someone's pain for them. Sometimes I think the only thing we can do is to stand with them. But that can seem like too little a lot of the time.
Thanks Husky, I think a lot of people can relate to what you wrote.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
