I need book title(s) for an 11yo boy who is a victim of a now-incarcerated uncle.

What has helped you or others in that age category while actually IN that very age?

Rob - depends on what you want - gritty and real or more uplifting and encouraging.

the former would include books by Paul Zindel, S. E. Hinton, Gary Paulsen and Robert Cormier. these deal with boys in difficult situations. the more pleasant ones would include classics like C.S.Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkein's works, Madeline l'Engle, and others. a visit to a bookstore or library might also help - you could ask a librarian or clerk for suggestions and browse the YA - young adult or youth fiction section and see what might be appropriate. much will depend upon the boy's reading level - Tolkein is more difficult than Lewis.

when i was that age i was reading Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson and Charles Dickens (as well as Hardy Boys!) among my favorites are still Huckleberry Finn, Oliver Twist and Kidnapped.

i don't know of anything written for kids that specifically tackles the topic of CSA. what helped me was just generally recognizing good and bad role models and seeing the results of decisions and circumstances in characters' lives in the narrative.

Clarification - i should have said i don't know of any books that deal with BOYS as characters with CSA - there are numerous ones about girls.

just did a quick search and found "Boy Toy" by Barry Lyga about a 12-yr-old boy abused by a female teacher. but it is intended for 16-up.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I was an emo-mess from hearing of this very local boy (through my ex).

They are seeking books like (similar to) Mike Lew VNL. That is, similar function to VNL to benefit the boy as well as the mother.

I see VNL for the boy as possibly existing in story-style, as most kids that age will frequently walk a path with a peer-character.

The mom-book exists. I just need to know what is recommended.

not an endorsement - i haven't read it - but one of the few that i could find.

and i was wrong about the website - Strong at the Heart - lots of reccommended books but not the one i thought. but at the very bottom there are 2 articles that i will read in more detail about sexual abuse of children in literature - novels & fiction. looks like a pretty extensive reading list in those.
