Townshend added to sex offenders list
Rock star Pete Townshend, arrested in January during a high-profile crackdown on Internet child porn, will be placed on a register of sex offenders after being formally cautioned, police say. Townshend is pictured being escorted from home in Richmond, London, on January 13, 2003 and taken to Twickenham Police Station after admitting to viewing images of child pornography on the Internet. Townshend has admitted giving his credit card details to see a child porn website, however he has insisted that it was done so for research. REUTERS/Stringer

Dave,

I've never known what to think of his arrest. Obviously SA was on his mind long ago ("Uncle Ernie"), but was he acting out via internet porn, "researching" as he claims, or something worse?

I guess I'm always going to take what I like from the lyrics anyway, and I realize that being a rock star doesn't make him super human, but for me it is kind of like seeing a hero fall.

Thanks,

Joe

I agree, Joe.

I have not known what to think and I came here looking to find someone else's opinion to help me through.

I admired Pete Townshend since I almost wore out my copy of Tommy. I didn't know then why the album resonated so well with me. Now I worry that the lyrics were backwards, but how could they have been?
Quote:
You didn't hear it
You didn't see it.
You won't say nothin' to no one
Never in your life
You never heard it
How absurd it
All seems without any proof

You didn't hear it
You didn't see it.
You never heard it not a word of it
You won't say nothing to no one
Never tell a soul
What you know is the Truth

- "You Didn't Hear It," from the album Tommy by The Who
Even as I mourn what might have been the ugly facts of Pete Townshend's life, I am reminded of how the world does not exist in clearly contrasting black and white, but in the many shades of gray and color.

Like that which comes before the beginning and that which comes after the end, the truth is not so easily known.

Peace,
James

I might not be exactly correct here - but - I think our UK laws make a difference between "making an indecent image" which is downloading, saving or printing an image, and "viewing indecent images" which is as it says - just viewing them straight on the screen.

Because of the complications of proving in a court that someone has / is viewing something like child porn it remains a "Cautionable" offence. "Making" the image carries severe penalties.

From what I understand Townshend's computer was clean, even though he had paid by credit card to view the site targetted by Operation Ore.

Dave

I think you are right, Dave, that while no images were found on his computer, he did use the card to access a site.

I still cannot figure it out, but maybe I don't need/want to?

Peace,
James
