A woman who claims she was a child sex victim of Ian Huntley has spoken of her fury after he was controversially granted legal aid to fight a court case against her.
Quote:
But a lot of the information on Huntley compiled by Humberside Police had been 'weeded out' and was wiped from the force computer.
I wonder why???

The Soham killer has been awarded around 1,000 of taxpayers money to fund a High Court battle with Hailey Giblin who says he indecently assaulted her when she was just 11 years old.

Astonishingly it appears the 32-year-old - jailed for life for the 2002 murders of ten year olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman - has launched the fight from his prison cell because he does not want to be formally classed as a 'paedophile'.

But the decision to give him state assistance prompted anger last night.

Mrs Giblin, 20, who is funding the private prosecution herself, said: "It is absolutely disgusting that a monster like Huntley is receiving money from hard working people to fight me in court.

"I am upset, angry but determined to carry on even if it involves facing him across a courtroom."

Mrs Giblin was just 11 when she says Huntley repeatedly sexually assaulted her in an orchard and against a school wall.

He threatened to kill her if she told anyone else but within months she reported him to police. Huntley was questioned but never charged.

After Huntley's conviction for the Soham murders, police reopened the case. They took fresh statements from potential witnesses and quizzed Huntley in jail.

But in 2005, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to prosecute because of a 'lack of evidence'. This enraged Mrs Giblin who launched a private prosecution in the civil courts.

Her aim was to have Huntley named as her attacker. The case has cost her tens of thousands of pounds and she has received no legal aid.

Earlier this year, her legal team, led by Elizabeth-Anne Gumbel, QC, served a writ on Huntley via the governor of Wakefield jail in West Yorkshire.

Huntley declined to file a defence and in October a High Court judge found in favour of Mrs Giblin. She planned to press on with a compensation claim for damages at a hearing on December 14.

But last night it emerged that not only has Huntley decided to contest the case, his application for legal aid has also been approved by the Legal Services Commission.

A stunned Mrs Giblin has now accepted the possibility that, if contested, the case could result in both her and Huntley having to give evidence and face each other across a court room.

But she is astonished that Britain's most notorious killer is being funded by the state - while she has to scrimp and save to pay soaring legal bills.

If the case does carry on, the legal aid bill will also increase.

Mrs Giblin, from Barton-on-Humber, North Lincolnshire, said: "I am told that the reason Huntley is fighting this is that he does not want to officially branded a paedophile.

"He is quite happy with being branded a child murderer because he can always explain that away as an accident. But for some reason he does not the fact that he abused an 11-year-old girl to become accepted fact.

"I think it is an absolute disgrace that he has received legal aid and someone like me, who has been let down by every single level of the criminal justice system, has not.

"I feel sorry for every single hardworking taxpayer who will now have to fund a monster like Huntley. I nearly choked when I found out."

She added: "This could end up in a trial because it will be my word against his. I am more than happy to be cross examined about this and face him in court.

"I don't believe he can get away with referring back to the statement he made to police in 1998. This has been his previous tactic but it will not work if he is being questioned in court.

"Many people think I should just let this go and try and forget about it.

"But I have long come to the conclusion that if you want something doing properly then you have to do it yourself. Then, if it all goes wrong, I can't blame anyone else.

"I also want to make sure that he's locked behind bars for the rest of his life. There is always a chance that he will be released back into society one day.

"I want to prove to others that allegations like this will not simple go away but will be dealt with."

Mrs Giblin estimates the cost of her case to be 60,000. This is made up of lawyers fees, the cost of a top barrister and the commissioning of reports from expert witnesses.

Central to her case is a video of the interview she gave to police in 1998 when making the original allegation.

Documents seen by the Daily Mail show that Huntley's lawyers, Liverpool-based firm AS Law, intend to have the October judgement 'set aside'.

Huntley's team say they have a 'valid defence'. The case will be heard by a judge in Manchester on Thursday.

After the Soham trial there was fury over the fact that Huntley's criminal defence team ran up a legal aid bill of more than 700,000.

A spokesman for the government body which process legal aid applications, said: "The Legal Services Commission can confirm that it has provided a small amount of funding to Ian Huntley in relation to an action involving Hailey Giblin.

"Clearly this is a very sensitive case, however, the Legal Services Commission has a statutory responsibility to provide funding for cases where the client meets a financial eligibility test and a legal merits test, which consider factors such as the case's likelihood of success.

"We cannot differentiate between applicants for legal aid on the grounds that a decision to grant funding may be unpopular in a particular case."

Huntley is not the first notorious prisoner to be granted taxpayer support to fight legal battles.

In 2001 it emerged that mass murderer Dennis Nilsen had received aid fight a lengthy battle for the 'right' receive hard core pornography in his prison cell.

After Huntley's conviction for the murders of Holly and Jessica in December 2003, it emerged that numerous young women had made complaints about his predatory sexual behaviour in the years running up to the deaths.

Between June 1995 and July 1999, at least ten complaints - including that of Hailey Giblin (then Edwards) - were made to police and social services about alleged sexual offences but nothing was done.

Despite this Huntley was able to obtain a job as a school caretaker in Soham. In part this was because basic vetting checks were not carried out.

But a lot of the information on Huntley compiled by Humberside Police had been 'weeded out' and was wiped from the force computer.

A damning report by Sir Michael Bichard into the errors triggered the resignation of Humberside chief constable David Westwood. However Huntley has always refused to accept his guilt.

He has consistently told family and friends that the murders were an accident and that Holly had died after falling into the bath.

He has never given any kind of convincing explanation for why Jessica died.

In the police video shot in 1998, Hailey fights back tears as she recalls how Huntley lured her into the woods, indecently assaulted her and threatened to strangle her if she told anyone.

Ste,
this is such a shame for the victim here. No justice, not at all. i understand her need to see this man labeled for what he did to her. i understand for myself i feel the same way about my perp. She is the victim and should be the one getting financial help, not him. how tragic for her but her strength gives me strength. if she can keep fighting against all odds then i can too. thank you for the inspiration. sending light and luv to mrs. Giblin and to you, sis

Sis, it is unimaginable what might have gone on here, and it must have been some part of pedophile group with links to the cops to wipe his name from their comps.

There are child sex rings run by those in authority for their weird cravings, and Huntley may just be the scapegoat.

I hope she finds the courage and the funds to carry on, but she cannot get legal help because it was thrown out by an earlier court.

Not the first time that has happened, you wanna see what really gets covered up here, and in yr country, and throughout the world, kids are suffering at the hands of authority,

Tell me about it!

Then it spins back to Colin Inglis Pages and pages of abuse claims but all charges found NOT Guilty.

Even the chief constable resigned""....

There are no suprises there. It would seem that our weak goverenment and all the fucking useless ministers are doing nothing once more.

If i had my way i would execute all these bastards save on tax payers money. But of course we cannot violate their "human rights" whilst these bastards can violate our rights.

Perhaps the judges and the whole rotten system in somehow involved with child sex rings and they fear exposure.
