All,

It's worse. Today's Hartford Courant has more details. She is alleged to have obstructed the investigation and hidden evidence and, more importantly, FAILED TO REPORT when she was a MANDATORY REPORTER!

These alleged incidents occurred in my state. It's an outrage. Story is here.

Ste, Paul,

I recently read - where I don't recall at the moment - that it is suspected that less than 20% of abuse cases that go past mandatory reporters are actually reported. Does this sounds familiar to anyone? I may have the figure wrong, but I remember being shocked.

Larry,

figures etc, do not make any sense to me, only the fact that most abuse is never reported or acted upon.

When a police officer is involved, then it becomes increasingly difficult those who should be there to protect, just as school teachers etc.

The one in four, one in six figures are snapped out of thin air to get people to pay money out to charity.

How can anyone come up with figures when this whole thing keeps boys in silence!

Ste,

I would imagine that the figure on reporting could come (for example) from therapists who have adult clients who were abused as children, when such laws were already in force, and yet can say that their abuse was never reported.

You and I both know of cases even this past year where teenagers who came here were abused and easily dodged the requirement that legal and medical people seeing them report their terrible injuries. It seems to be the rule, not the exception.

To me, that screams out that society still sees CSA not as a crime that should be reported and punished, but as a shame that should be covered up and not discussed.

I encountered a big exception in November. When I disclosed to my parents at a T's office, the first thing I had to do was sign a disclaimer with numerous points in it. One was that if any abuse of a minor comes to the attention of this T she will immediately report it to the police and child protection authorities.

That in itself can be a limiting factor under some conditions, when it comes to the roporting of CSA. It's going to make a person in therapy think twice or three times before even mentioning to the T of temptation to abuse, let alone being an abuser. Sort of like warning the burgler that you are there waiting with a gun to blow his head off. Guess what? If I'm the burgler, I'm not gonna come anywhere near!

Once the trooper knew that he was having these urges and visting Child Porn websites, she should have gotten him help. Unfortunately I don't think police are trained to deal with this. Frankly they should be, because if you can stop someone from abusing a child you should. It helps the person with the urges and protects the children in the community

John,

You are so right! So we come full circle on this business of mandatory reporting. From what I can see it is an unworkable system and doesn't reflect the realities of society, at least not as the system is currently structured.
