The Water *

Adrift, moored to nothing

Listing gently
I loll in the pool

back arched, nose like a reed until
sound becomes weightless
my heels held like Achilles to the bottom

falling without form,
I let go,
look up to the mirror-distorted surface
and dissolve into the water.

I am free
of double-crossing flesh
and bothersome need.
there is no now and there is no then
I am suspended in the moment.

I meant this to be a positive poem. I wonder, does it come across that way?

James,
I like this piece for a couple of points. First of all I love the water and for me floating in the pool was a way to rest my tired body and mind. The water held/ holds me -- I didnt have to hold myself anymore.
Here you describe beautifully and tenderly the act of "letting go" yet remain "rooted" by your heels by Achilles or grounded in reality.

sound becomes weightless - ahhhh and it does when in the water floating does it not? the ears fill with just enough water to muffle noises yet allows enough good into the mind and head to soothe troubled thoughts.

the surface is distorted -- like those mirrors at the fun houses -- my own surface is distorted from what my insides really often are and feel like -- and dissolve into the water -- THAT line is so powerful !! I have practiced meditation for years, i say practiced as I had never been able to reach my "center" until I floated in the bath tub one day.... the peace that came with it was a point exactly as you describe with that very powerful line!

"I am free
of double-crossing flesh
and bothersome need.
there is no now and there is no then
I am suspended in the moment."

moved so deeply by this volumns spoken with such few words....
I say Thank You for sharing this piece, its wonderful and gives hope of peace and serenity to our "distorted" perceptions.

Peace ~ Wifey1
