If I knew, wouldn’t I say? If I knew, wouldn’t I share it? And if I know, can’t I fix it? Can’t I make it better?

I know, but there is no answer in the knowledge. I may see the cold, but I am powerless to change it.

I see you there in the corner, knees up to your chest and I want to help you, but I can’t erase the past. I cannot explain that which should never have happened. One eye peeks at me from behind your knees. I see anguish and bewilderment lurking there.

I want to tell you what will happen now. I want to tell you that you are not alone and that if you put out your hand, others will reach for you. I want to tell you that nothing has been taken from you, that you are as complete as you need to be. I want to tell you all these things and make you well.

But winter has arrived. The Earth is frozen and lifeless. Everything is gray. Color is drained from all that I see, and, like a tree that has lost its leaves, we can only wait for spring.

He shouts with a broken voice, “What now? I am cold. Make it go away!”

“That which was taken was taught. You will learn. And take no one else.” His knees chatter against his chin. He is a child. He cannot understand.

A chill gusts by us, and I want to open my jacket, pull him close to me and let my heart warm his. But I am afraid. So I sit, my back pressed against the child, and the friendless wind hard on my face.

Cement,
Your words are very touching and have meant a lot to me lately. Not just these, I mean all of your posts. Thanks for all of them.

Now I share some lyrics from "The Rose", which I think speak to this post.

Quote:
It's the heart, afraid of breaking,
That never learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking,
That never takes a chance.

It's the one who won't be taken,
Who cannot seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dyin',
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely,
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong.

Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love,
In the spring becomes the rose.
Donald
