Cool poem Nyjah - is it a rap?

Cool. What kind of rap do you like? I don't know much about it myself - just that most of the CDs have "parental advisories" on them \:\) . My kids made me watch Eight Mile though, and from that film I learned a lot about Eminem and the urban rap scene in general. In some ways it reminds me of the blues scene in the American south in the 1930s: black clubs where whites and hispanics were also welcome, very informal and sometimes kind of wild, lot of in-your-face kind of things.

And what sort of poetry do you read? Who do you like?

Yes that's the great thing about a battle - the guy battling is representing his whole group against another group. It isn't just individuals. In "Eight Mile" I loved it when the MC started things off by saying "Spin that shit!" \:\)

Eminem has a very political side to his rap and I think that's really good. When I was a teenager our rock music had a lot of that: songs about civil rights, social injustice, Vietnam, the confusion of growing up, and so on.

You have a heart for poetry Nyjah. You should explore it and see where it takes you. Don't worry about how "good" your poem is - the first thing to do is to learn to just express yourself. The same with battling: just let it out and be true to your feelings. As you become more comfortable and gain confidence the rhymes and cool ideas will just come.

Man, I loved watching 8 mile. When ever I would be at my friends we would watch it. We were trying to come up with enough money for some turn tables and records for them. We're so far from how much they are. We just beat box.

Really? Cool, thanks. Who knows, maybe I'll be the next great MC. \:D \:D

Nyjah,

Another thing to think about, and this relates to what Howard told you on another thread. When the various clubs and gangs gather for a battle, they are expressing their pride, energy, frustration, anger, hopes, whatever, and doing so in a peaceful constructive way. The verbal abuse is incredible, but so also is the wit, insight, and humor. And everyone goes home instead of to the morgue or emergency room! All this stuff on your mind needs an outlet, so why not rap and poetry?

Do you record your rap ever? Next time you get really really mad, let it out and record it. It won't be perfect of course not. Remember in the film all the times Eminem was practicing and messing things up? But try it and see how it goes.

Nyjah,

Here is something for you: It is a verse from a great old rock 'n roll song called "Reelin' and Rockin'" written by Chuck Berry. He is a great black American guitarist and songwriter and his music basically defined the way rock music developed in the 1960s. He is still alive and touring today, but he recorded this song in 1958, so ages ago!

From "Reelin' and Rockin'"

Sometimes I will, then again I think I won't.
Sometimes I can, then again I think I can't.
Sometimes I do, then again I think I don't

Well I looked at my watch - it was 9:21.
We was at a rock 'n roll dance havin' nothing but fun
And we were all reelin' and a'rockin',
We was reelin' and a'rock and rollin' til the break of dawn.

Read this again and again until you have memorized it, then think about it. What does this say to you? He is talking about having fun in the midst of all the confusion of growing up. Really think about it!!!! Allow yourself to feel what you think. What makes you mad? What makes you happy? Think of all the bullshit that is said about kids and why it isn't right. Think of all your own ideas. Then take Chuck Berry's verse and answer him with a rap of your own - tell him what you think in 2005. Then post it here. And have fun!
