This is from Roger Waters album "In the flesh".
I love his stuff, his lyrics are so inspiring.

Quote:
Not the torturer will scare me
Nor the body's final fall
Nor the barrels of death's rifles
Nor the shadows on the wall
Nor the night when to the ground
The last dim star of pain, is hurled
But the blind indifference
Of a merciless, unfeeling world

Lying in the burnt out shell
Of some Albanian farm
An old Babushka
Holds a crying baby in her arms
A soldier from the other side
A man of heart and pride
Breaks ranks, lays down his rifle
To kneel by her side
He gives her water
Binds her wounds
And calms the crying child

A touch gives absolution then
Across the great divide
He picks his way back through the broken
China of her life
And there at the curb
The samaritan Serb turns and waves ... goodbye

And each small candle
Lights a corner of the dark
Each small candle
Lights a corner of the dark
Each small candle lights a corner of the dark

When the wheel of pain stops turning
And the branding iron stops burning
When the children can be children
When the desperados weaken
When the tide rolls into greet them
And the natural law of science
Greets the humble and the mighty
And the billion candles burning
Lights the dark side of every human mind

Each small candle
Each small candle (repeated)
Each small candles lights the dark side of every human mind

And each small candle
Lights a corner of the dark
He writes excellent lyrics and one other favourite is Amused to death.

Its about soldiers in the second world war,

ste

Ste,

The refrain here says so much:

Quote:
And each small candle
Lights a corner of the dark
There's the answer to the question: "What can only one person do?"

Much love,
Larry

Larry,

his lyrics are true life events he captures, and it is right that each of us flicker like candles.
We altogether can make a difference.

From "Amused to Death"

The ending of it is a little girl commenting on a TV broadcast of the war, a typical childs remark on something they dont know about!

[Alf Razzell:]
"Two things that have haunted me most are the days when I had to collect the paybooks; and when I left Bill Hubbard in no-man's-land."

"I was picked up and taken into their trench. And I'd no sooner taken two or three steps down the trench when I heard a call, 'Hello Razz,
I'm glad to see you. This is my second night here,' and he said 'I'm feeling bad,' and it was Bill Hubbard, one of the men we'd trained
in England, one of the original battalion.

I had a look at his wound, rolled him over; I could see it was probably a fatal wound.
You could imagine what pain he was in, he was dripping with sweat; and after
I'd gone about three shellholes, traversed that, had it been...had
there been a path or a road I could have done better.

He pummeled me, 'Put me down, put me down, I'd rather die, I'd rather die, put me
down.' I was hoping he would faint. He said 'I can't go any further,
let me die.'

I said 'If I leave you here Bill you won't be found, let's have another go.' He said 'All right then.' And the same thing happened; he couldn't stand it any more, and I had to leave him
there, in no-man's-land."

(Girl) "I don't mind about the war, that's one of the things I like to watch, if it's a war going on, 'cause then I know if our side's winning,
if our side's losing..."

Ste,

I can see what you mean. Thanks for posting all this; it really is food for thought.

Much love,
Larry
