This song almost made by b/f fall over - literally. We were out and it came on the juke box; it caught him so off guard it took everything he had to keep it together.

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Trish,

The original is by Nine Inch Nails, on the Downward Spiral album. Trent Reznor originally wrote it about his heroin addiction and depression. I seem to remember that Trent also presented some sort of award to Johnny after this song was recorded.

If you really want to get blown away, download the original Nine Inch Nails video. Powerful stuff.

I acutally prefer Johnny Cash's version. His voice seems to echo the pain inside.

the Johnny Cash version sends chills down my spine every time I hear it...

I really can feel the pain in his voice...

I like them both. The NIN version is barely-restrained rage of a young man who has seen the dark side of humanity and seeing it, is horrified by what he saw reflected in himself. Cash's version is the lament of an old man who realises too late that he has wasted his life and has nothing left but empty material possessions and cheap trophies.

Just an add-on that the movie "Walk the Line", concerning Johnny Cash's life, is pretty powerful stuff when viewed from the perspective of overcoming childhood abuse. While JC wasn't sexually abused, his brother was killed in an accident and Johnny's father blamed him for it...his sense of shame and guilt for the accident (he wasn't even there) contributed to his destructive behaviors earlier in life.

That whole album by Johnny Cash is just so good, so much emotion and truth.

And "Hurt" always brings tears to my eyes.........
