i was talking to some people in the chat room tonight and i was informed that they didn't know about the song "daddy" by korn. this song is about abuse and when i heard it the first time in 8th grade, i almost had 500 heart attacks. it really affected me even though it wasn't actually my dad who did bad stuff. it made me look at what had happend to me instead of ignoring it, it made me see that someone else might know what i had been through and that maybe i was not alone and maybe i wasn't just imagining or making up all the bad things i was feeling because of it. listening to the actual song is much more moving than just reading the lyrics, so if you feel like you can handle it's emotional intenseness, you should listen to it right away. did any of you guys know about this song already? --------------------------------
'daddy' by Korn
***HUGE TRIGGERS***
Mother, please forgive me. I just had to get out all my pain and suffering. Now that I am done, remember I will always love you; I'm your son.
Little child looking so pretty come out and play, I'll be your Daddy Innocent child looking so sweet I rape in my eyes and on your flesh I'll eat
You raped, I feel dirty It hurt as a child Tied down, "That's a good boy." And fuck your own child I scream, no one hears me It hurt, not a liar My God, Saw you watching Mommy, why? Your own child
Little child, looking so pretty, come out and play, I'll be your Daddy
You raped, I feel dirty It hurt as a child Tied down, "That's a good boy." And fuck your own child I scream, no one hears me It hurt, not a liar My God, Saw you watching Mommy, why?
It's alright
You raped, I feel dirty It hurt as a child Tied down, "That's a good boy." And fuck your own child You raped, no one hears me It hurt as a child Tied down, no one hears me And rape your own child
"I didn't touch you there." Mommy said she didn't care. "I didn't touch you there." That's why Mommy stopped and stared.
Little child looking so sweet I rape in my eyes and on your flesh I'll eat
You raped, I feel dirty It hurt as a child Tied down, "That's a good boy." And fuck your own child I scream, no one hears me It hurt, I’m not a liar My God, Saw you watch Mommy, why? Your own child
You raped, I feel dirty It hurt as a child Tied down, "That's a good boy." And fuck your own child I scream, no one hears me It hurt, I’m not a liar My God, Saw you watch Mommy, why?
[Crying with frustration] Motherfucker Fuck!! Fucking bitch I fucking hate you Fuck you Motherfucker I fucking hate you Fuck you Bitch You fucking ruin my life You fucked... Fucking bitch I hate you I fucking hate you Fuck you...
[Crying Continues]
[Woman begins to sing]
[Music starts again]
[Jon Leaves The Booth]

Kurt, This is a powerful song in all sorts of ways, especially in how the abuser manipulates and humiliates the boy. The abuser in the song isn't the boy's father, by the way. Part of the abuser's sick fantasy is that he wants to make believe he is having sex with his own son, and at the same time he wants to shame his victim absolutely. Jonathan Davis probably means that he had to call the abuser "Daddy" and ask him to do the things that the abuser wanted. That's what happened to me, and it was utterly shaming and humiliating, exactly as the abuser wanted. From an earlier generation we also get powerful songwriting from the Who, whose guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend was abused as a kid. The rock opera "Tommy" talks about this, primarily in one song where Uncle Ernie "fiddles about" with Tommy. There too, Townshend has really emotional lyrics stressing how innocent and defenseless the boy was. Your post had this very important comment in it: it made me look at what had happend to me instead of ignoring it, it made me see that someone else might know what i had been through and that maybe i was not alone and maybe i wasn't just imagining or making up all the bad things i was feeling because of it. Just imagine how many other boys this Korn song helped in the same way. You sure weren't alone, Kurt, but I bet it made a big difference to KNOW you weren't alone. Much love, Larry

Wow, as if the lyrics aren't powerful and sad enough, I suppose they are open to interpretation as well. When I read them, I tagged the abuser as the boy's mother.

Trish, Wow, I can see what you mean. The song DOES allow for that interpretation. But I vaguely recall Davis saying in an interview that the abuser was a male but not his father. An uncle? I just don't recall. The point remains, of course, that a LOT of abused teenagers who follow Korn's music will have been helped by this song, exactly as Kurt was. I wonder how many letters Davis has received about this. Korn (for you older people ) is one of the most influential heavy metal bands in the business and still one of the most popular live shows in rock music today. Much love, Larry

Kurt,
Here are the relevant parts of the Who's rock opera "Tommy" that I was talking about. The album came out in 1970. This was pretty radical stuff to say back then, as the sexual abuse of boys wasn't yet recognized as a big issue. What gives these simple lyrics their incredible power is the music that goes with them.
Do You Think It's Alright?
Mother:
Do you think it’s alright, To leave the boy with Uncle Ernie? Do you think it’s alright; He’s had a few too many tonight. D’you think it’s alright?
Father:
I think it’s alright, yes I think it’s alright.
Fiddle About
Uncle Ernie:
I’m your wicked Uncle Ernie I’m your wicked Uncle Ernie I’m glad you won’t see or hear me I’m glad you won’t see or hear me As I fiddle about As I fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about! Fiddle about!
Your mother left me here to mind you Your mother left me here to mind you Now I’m doing what I want to Now I’m doing what I want to Fiddling about Fiddling about Fiddling about Fiddling about Fiddle about! Fiddle about!
Down with the bedclothes Down with the bedclothes Up with the nightshirt! Up with the nightshirt! Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about! Fiddle about!
You won’t shout as I fiddle about You won’t shout as I fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about Fiddle about! Fiddle about! Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle. Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle.

Kurt,
The lyrics reflect the repetitions sung by the different members of the band. "Tommy" has a lot of this in it.

Hi,
Just wanted to throw something in about korns song, Davis had a rocky upbringin, his parents divorced when he was young, and his relationship with his father was poor, his neighbour was the perp who gained trust from davis by being a father figure to him, the parts mentionin his mother are about him telling his mother about what was happenin to him and she belived the perps word over her sons, it is a very meaninful song which to this day Korn have never played live except for one time but the song wasnt finished Davis couldnt sing and broke down on stage. if you listen at the end of the song 'Daddy' you can hear Davis start to cry and eventually walk out of the studio, Real tears for real pain. i have huge respect Davis

it's good to know jon. davis's background. i never really knew it for sure, i just assumed stuff from the songs i had heard. yeah. the end of the song is always the part that really gets me...god. i think he is so awesome for putting such an honest song out there. i couldn't do it. as for performing the song live? yeah, it doesn't surprise me that he broke down when he tried to do it. i mean, i can't tell even one person about what happend to me...much less thousands.
