Depends if I want to cheer up or feel sad. Sometimes it is important to feel sad.
To feel sad: Lonesome Loser by Little River Band. It does seem like my theme song. Storybook Love by Mark Knopfler from Princess Bride. Lead Me On by Maxine Nightingale. Vincent by Don Mclean.
To cheer up: Strokin by Clarence Carter. Long Way From Home by Glenn Kaiser. I want it played at my funeral. It is just so beautiful. I've Got a Name by Jim Croce. That Where I am You may Also Be by Rich Mullins. It leaves me in tears, but it still cheers me up. Are You Drinking With Me Jesus by Mojo Nixon and Jello Biafra.
I have odd Eclectic tastes.

ok- this may seem gay - but i am
n so really the hopeless feeling - and the urgency to find something to snap out of it -
definitely guided by some musicals lyrics -
ie: these are a few of my favorite things -!

When I'm sad and wanna feel sad I listen to Simon and Garfunkel:
Sounds of Silence Bridge Over Troubled Water Only living boy in New York Why don't you write me [nearly forgot that one]
I don't particularly like angry music. In my cd player at the moment: Rod Stewart.

For me blues music does it every time. One of my favorites is Son House, whom I knew when I was a kid, and Muddy Waters is also great. The late great John Lee Hooker - wow, says it all. Many people think the blues is all sad music, but a lot of it is very positive and funny as hell too. It helps me to keep things in perspective.

Roadrunner the high point of all the gigs I've seen in 40 years was John Lee Hooker doing an open air gig on the Toronto waterfront, the man was the best. Blues does the same for me, it takes me somewhere where I can escape. I just doesn't make me feel blue. Demonboi & Charlie I give in, I accept that I'm an old fart. I don't recognise any of those bands. To cheer myself up I play Tom Waits, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, J L Hooker and the Stones. Or just about anything from Kasabian to the Pogues ! Dave

Robbie Robertson, the track, Somewhere down that crazy river, is excellent, the whole album is. 60s/70s I think Ive got everything that was ever made in those eras. Amused to death - Roger Waters Hearts of space, got most of them Early Genesis Sounds of nature - relaxing Schiller Lieben LLewellyn place of apples - excellent stuff,
the list is endless,

I listen to this when I feel full of fear and "stuck". It speaks of courage and hope.
From the song The Rose:
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose
Sophiesdad
EDIT TO ADD THIS:
I have a movie that is my "fantasy" in a way. It's "Regarding Henry". Harrison Ford plays an attorney who suffers a trauma to the brain which leaves him completely in a state of amnesia. There are many times that I wish that I would be able to do that.... completely rebuild my life from scratch without the memories, the trauma, etc.

Music is my all time comforter, no matter what mood i can always find something to fit! I love classic rock, zeppelin is a definite favorite, but also jimi hendrix, doors, the who, janis joplin, so many others... college friends got me into angry music, and i found the comfort in listening to it, plus i love the engy levels in seeing the live concerts, so much energy! some favs are NIN, Deftones, Pantera, Soulfly, Trail of Dead, Rollins Band, and WEEN!... adn the list goes on
but two ultimate favorites are TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE... seen them both a few times, and Maynard (lead singer/writer for both) is simply amazing... and i still think hes a survivor... read into the lyrics and you'll see what i mean....
then theres JAZZ and BLUES!!! gotta love em... coltrane, miles davis, thelonius monk, charlie parker, ella, and billie, and then into koko taylor, and buddy guy, and muddy, and john lee hooker, howlin wolf... stevie ray vaughn... oh the list goes on and on!!! hey i'm from chicago, how can i not LOVE the blues! (and FELA KUTI, african jazz, incredible!) then there the chill music like jam bands and fusions... like Soulive, and Karl Denson, galactic, victor wooten, tim reynolds, jazz mandolin project, modeski martin and wood...
Add some sou/R&B like AL GREEN, MARVIN GAYE, Otis Redding, teddy P,
and lately some Narah Jones, and Joss Stone (that girl can SING!) and ya, i could keep going and going and going... but this is getting long!! sorry bout that, i just LOVE MUSIc!!!!!!
peace, cpt.

[3 Doors Down- This Time ]
Unsure of yourself you stand divided now. Which road will lead you there Last time you fell and you hit hard Your wounds have healed by now But you still see your scars yeah
But it's not the way it use to be right now You come so far to just let this go my friend The same way you did the last time You'll break when you fall Don't make the same mistakes you did all over You've got to believe in yourself this time
Live on, live it up today This life's your cup So drink it up I say, yeah Say it's mine so give it all up to me now And walk that line, don't let this go, don't go out the
Same way you did the last time Your break when you fall Don't make the same mistakes you did all over You've got to believe in yourself this time
Life's your cup, Drink it up Life's your cup
The same way you did the last time You'll break when you fall Don't make the same mistakes you did all over You got to believe in yourself this time

Artist: Rare Earth Lyrics Song: I Just Want To Celebrate Lyrics
I just want to celebrate another day of livin' I just want to celebrate another day of life I put my faith in the people But the people let me down So I turned the other way And I carry on, anyhow That's why I'm telling you
I just want to celebrate, yeah, yeah I just want to celebrate, yeah, yeah Another day of living, I just want to celebrate another day of life
Had my hand on the dollar bill And the dollar bill blew away But the sun is shining down on me And it's here to stay That's why I'm telling you
I just want to celebrate, yeah, yeah Another day of living, yeah I just want to celebrate another day of living I just want to celebrate another day of life
Don't let it all get you down, Don't let it turn you around and around And around and around
Well, I can't be bothered with sorrow And I can't be bothered with hate, no, no I'm using up my time by feeling fine, every day That's why I'm telling you I just want to celebrate Aw, yeah I just want to celebrate yeah yeah Another day of living, yeah yeah I just want to celebrate another day of livin', yeah I just want to celebrate another day of life
Don't let it all get you down, no, no Don't let it turn you around and around, And around and around, and around Around round round 'round and around round round round don't go 'round

more "lump-in-throat" or "dark like I feel now" songs: blessed- elton john misstra know-it-all- stevie wonder save me- aimee mann not dark yet- bob dylan pictures of you- the cure i'm so lonesome i could cry- hank williams tears in heaven- eric clapton you've got a friend- james taylor overkill- men at work comfortably numb- pink floyd send in the clowns- judy collins i can't make you love me- bonnie raitt fade to black- metallica little wing- jimi hendrix WARNING if sad music or subject matter reinforce self-withdrawal and depression, DO NOT listen to it! Some use music to reinforce self-sabotage, and I'm not about to endorse that. I use it to overcome my instinct to suppress emotion, especially sadness.

This is a big one today for me.... In My Daughters Eyes - Martina McBride. In my daughter's eyes I am a hero I am strong and wise and I know no fear But the truth is plain to see She was sent to rescue meI see who I wanna be In my daughter's eyes In my daughter's eyes everyone is equalDarkness turns to light and the world is at peace This miracle God gave to megives me strength when I am weakI find reason to believe In my daughter's eyes And when she wraps her hand around my finger Oh it puts a smile in my heart Everything becomes a little clearer I realize what life is all about It's hangin' on when your heart has had enough It's giving more when you feel like giving upI've seen the light It's in my daughter's eyes In my daughter's eyes I can see the future A reflection of who I am and what will be Though she'll grow and someday leave Maybe raise a family When I'm gone I hope you see how happy she made me For I'll be there In my daughter's eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLS0Y40WwlAShes the only one who keeps me going sometimes.

Yeah. I just noticed how big this topic is- I'm sure I repeated some songs already posted, but I know I'd have been dead or (more)insane years ago, were it not for music...

This is coming from an unrepentant blues fanatic, but I bet you guys would all like a blues musician most of you will not have heard of: Catfish Keith. He's an amazing acoustic and slide guitar player and all his CDs are just great. Catch him on tour if you can, and you can get his CDs here. Much love, Larry

Metallica Until it sleeps
Where do I take this pain of mine I run but it stays right by my side
So tear me open and pour me out There's things inside that scream and shout And the pain still hates me So hold me until it sleeps
Just like the curse, just like the stray You feed it once and now it stays Now it stays
So tear me open but beware There's things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me until I'm clean
It grips you so hold me It stains you so hold me It hates you so hold me It holds you so hold me Until it sleeps
So tell me why you've chosen me Don't want your grip, don't want your greed Don't want it
I'll tear me open make you gone No more can you hurt anyone And the fear still shakes me So hold me, until it sleeps
It grips you so hold me It stains you so hold me It hates you so hold me It holds you, holds you, holds you until it sleeps (x4)
I Don't want it want it want it want it want it No
So tear me open but beware There's things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me 'til I'm clean
I'll tear me open make you gone No longer will you hurt anyone And the hate still shapes me So hold me until it sleeps
