For me blues music does it every time. One of my favorites is Son House, whom I knew when I was a kid, and Muddy Waters is also great. The late great John Lee Hooker - wow, says it all. Many people think the blues is all sad music, but a lot of it is very positive and funny as hell too. It helps me to keep things in perspective.

Roadrunner the high point of all the gigs I've seen in 40 years was John Lee Hooker doing an open air gig on the Toronto waterfront, the man was the best. Blues does the same for me, it takes me somewhere where I can escape. I just doesn't make me feel blue. Demonboi & Charlie I give in, I accept that I'm an old fart. I don't recognise any of those bands. To cheer myself up I play Tom Waits, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, J L Hooker and the Stones. Or just about anything from Kasabian to the Pogues ! Dave

Robbie Robertson, the track, Somewhere down that crazy river, is excellent, the whole album is. 60s/70s I think Ive got everything that was ever made in those eras. Amused to death - Roger Waters Hearts of space, got most of them Early Genesis Sounds of nature - relaxing Schiller Lieben LLewellyn place of apples - excellent stuff,
the list is endless,

I listen to this when I feel full of fear and "stuck". It speaks of courage and hope.
From the song The Rose:
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose
Sophiesdad
EDIT TO ADD THIS:
I have a movie that is my "fantasy" in a way. It's "Regarding Henry". Harrison Ford plays an attorney who suffers a trauma to the brain which leaves him completely in a state of amnesia. There are many times that I wish that I would be able to do that.... completely rebuild my life from scratch without the memories, the trauma, etc.

Music is my all time comforter, no matter what mood i can always find something to fit! I love classic rock, zeppelin is a definite favorite, but also jimi hendrix, doors, the who, janis joplin, so many others... college friends got me into angry music, and i found the comfort in listening to it, plus i love the engy levels in seeing the live concerts, so much energy! some favs are NIN, Deftones, Pantera, Soulfly, Trail of Dead, Rollins Band, and WEEN!... adn the list goes on
but two ultimate favorites are TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE... seen them both a few times, and Maynard (lead singer/writer for both) is simply amazing... and i still think hes a survivor... read into the lyrics and you'll see what i mean....
then theres JAZZ and BLUES!!! gotta love em... coltrane, miles davis, thelonius monk, charlie parker, ella, and billie, and then into koko taylor, and buddy guy, and muddy, and john lee hooker, howlin wolf... stevie ray vaughn... oh the list goes on and on!!! hey i'm from chicago, how can i not LOVE the blues! (and FELA KUTI, african jazz, incredible!) then there the chill music like jam bands and fusions... like Soulive, and Karl Denson, galactic, victor wooten, tim reynolds, jazz mandolin project, modeski martin and wood...
Add some sou/R&B like AL GREEN, MARVIN GAYE, Otis Redding, teddy P,
and lately some Narah Jones, and Joss Stone (that girl can SING!) and ya, i could keep going and going and going... but this is getting long!! sorry bout that, i just LOVE MUSIc!!!!!!
peace, cpt.
