I was as a child and still am deeply moved and affected by much of the recorded teachings of Jesus.
His invitation to "follow me" is one of them. He is plain about what is to be left behind--all material possessions--but I think in that may be implied that all preconceptions about how a human being should behave in society are to be left behind as well.
"Follow me" and do what? I agree that the words of this hymn are all of what is implied by that invitation. Oh, that all of us might hear it and take it to heart.
There are, I think, many followers too busy following to worry about whether or not they are being perceived as doing things in a right and proper "Christian" way. They are, I suspect, the "meek" that he refers to elsewhere.
"In the world outside of things, there is nothing to get in the way."
Sometimes, things just won't work the way we want them to.
