What you're rejecting is of course the famous "retail therapy", the temptation to buy lots of unnecessary and often trivial things because they give us something to do (compare, select and buy) and something positive to look forward to (arrival of the goods).
Rejecting this is really difficult, and so often we don't even realize we are doing it until we look at the absurd collection of stuff coming into the house! I'm glad you nailed and confronted this one. It gets expensive doesn't it?!
