I hear voices!

You say what?

I hear voices!!!

Voices of children, both girls and boys,

Sexually victimized by clergy.

I hear the children’s voices,

Abandoned, tired, angry.

I hear voices!

I hear voices of the abusers:

Do not tell or you will go to hell!

Do not tell or I will kill you!

Do not tell or I will commit suicide!

Yes, I hear voices!

I hear voices of the hierarchy:

Just get over it!

We asked you to forgive us!

Shut up and go away!

I hear voices!

I hear voices of the survivors.

I hear their testimonies!

Courageous people standing up to their abusers.

Yes, I hear voices!!!

Do you?

This poem is dedicated to SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests)
Celebrating 25 years of advocacy for victims and survivors!

we all hear the voices.

which ones do we listen to?

“If you have a bad thought about yourself, tell it to go to hell, because that is exactly where it came from.” Brigham Young

thanks for sharing this poem and the dedication.

SNAP says the way the Catholic church is dealing with emerging cases of child abuse at the hands of priests is inadequate and it is looking to the Pope for action.
SNAP wants to see a register formed so that priests who they say have been "credibly accused" of child abuse could be named and shamed so that parents can protect their children.

"The priest who abused me controlled me through fear," a New York cop, abused at age eight by her parish priest said. "There was a rhyme: 'If you tell, you go to hell.' It worked. I didn't tell. Not for a long time."
