A 34-year-old Canadian man was sexually assaulted, beaten and robbed by a man he invited to his hotel room in Philadelphia, US after talking with him on the gay hookup app Grindr.
The victim, who did not want to be identified by NBC Philadelphia, was in the city to attend an education conference when he invited the suspect to his Hilton Home2 Suites hotel room around 1.30 pm on Wednesday.
The man said the suspect held him up at gunpoint shortly after he arrived.
After the assault, the victim said he was forced to buy four $500 Visa gift cards before being walked to five nearby ATMs and told to withdraw $200 from each cash machine.
'The whole thing was just a giant blur. I was scared and I kept thinking if I just do what he says, then he'll just go away,' he told an NBC reporter on the phone. 'I was afraid to say anything. I was afraid of what was going to happen,' he added.
The pair was inside a bar when the victim managed to break free and call the police.
The TV report broadcasted clips from surveillance cameras inside the bar that captured the struggle between the men.
When asked about whether his ordeal will change the way he uses dating and hookup apps, like Grindr, he said, 'I will no longer be doing any type of app like that again. I'm just not.'
Philadelphia Police described the suspect to be about 20 years old, 5 foot 11-inches tall with wavy hair and star tattoos on the back of his right hand. He was wearing a dark colored jacket, dark blue jeans and tan boots. Police tipline: 215.686.TIPS
