This is a song that was written and recorded by me some ten years ago now. My only copies are on zip disk and 8 mm, and I don't have players for either anymore... so I can't access the actual mp3.

I've been reluctant in the past to post anything I performed simply because it might have compromised my anonymity. Any one of the small number of people who actually came to watch me play might recognize some of the songs, but I guess I've gotten to the point in my recovery where I don't have anything to hide anymore. Plus, trying to actually play these songs nowadays fills me with an undescribable remorse. I was in a lot of pain in those days, and I never even realized it. Songs like these kind of captured that pain, and even though I sang this one with an upbeat strumming pattern with bright chords, the words themselves mean so much more now than they did then.

Of all of the songs I've ever written, this one is my favorite. So, without further ado, here are the lyrics:

I Get By

Standing in the alley,
Buildings block the wind.
Only time will tell if I'm going to hell.
I'm not the only soul who's sinned.

I haven't got a dollar.
All I've got these days is time.
I could go and get myself silly
If I could only afford a dime.

I've been counting down the minutes
Until the day I die.
Life sure ain't what I thought it'd be
Somehow I get by.

I got a chip on my shoulder.
Maybe it's just a grain of salt.
You know this road is mud, but no one knew.
How could it really be my fault?

I look at all my friends.
I love 'em all the time.
And then there's days when they get to me,
That really messes with my mind.

I've been counting down the minutes
Until the day I die.
Life sure ain't what I thought it'd be,
But somehow I get by.

I'll be counting down the minutes
As long as I'm alive.
Life sure ain't what I thought it'd be,
But somehow I've survived.
Yeah I get by.

Why doesn't someone come rescue me?
I'm sitting here waiting so blind I can't see,
But as long as I can play, and as long as I don't die,
As long as I can sing, I'll get by.

I love that, Bryan.

"As long as I can sing, I'll get by."

Thanks, Dave. It's so true, too. So many days in my past were filled with song when there was nothing else there to cling to.

When I was a kid, my parents' response to my incessant singing was "shut the hell up". I feel some sadness now that there was no one around back then to nurture my most powerful passion in life.

Loc: in my own world in pittsburgh,...
your song reminds me of when i turned 35 and realized i would not longer measure my life in birthdays accrued, but rather by counting those i would have left. 1....2.....3.....4.....

keep on singing bro, how can you not?

I was like that with guitar. I started playing when I was 14-15, so some time after the abuse ended, when I was trying to make sense of my life. And what music attracted me? The blues.

Much love,
Larry
