I consider myself a well-read person but had no idea Cossacks still existed until I read a NatGeo article about 7 years ago. And yeah... I was kind of scared to see them, as a concept. Chalk it up to Hebrew school.

Scott Lively is also one of the authors of "The Pink Swastika" a holocaust revisionist book that claims gays masterminded the holocaust, during which gay men were sent to concentration camps. The Southern Poverty Law Center, who tracks hate group activity, has an article on their web site talking about Lively's book:

Quote:
Anti-Gay Religious Crusaders Claim Homosexuals Helped Mastermind the Holocaust

For decades now, "Holocaust revisionists" in the U.S. and Europe have published pseudo-scholarly papers and books claiming to prove that the Nazis never carried out a systematic extermination of Jews. In 1995, a book called The Pink Swastika made similar claims about the Nazis' treatment of homosexuals during the Holocaust.

Written by fundamentalist activists Scott Lively and Kevin Abrams, The Pink Swastika says that rather than being victimized by the Nazis, gay men in Hitler's inner circle actually helped mastermind the Holocaust.

"While we cannot say that homosexuals caused the Holocaust, we must not ignore their central role in Nazism," write Lively and Abrams. "To the myth of the 'pink triangle' the notion that all homosexuals in Nazi Germany were persecuted we must respond with the reality of the 'pink swastika.'"

Historians agree that this "reality" is utterly false. But many anti-gay crusaders have used the "gay Nazi" myth as proof that gay people are immoral and destructive.

"When lawlessness is abroad in the land, the same thing will happen here that happened in Nazi Germany," Pat Robertson once warned viewers of his 700 Club. "Many of those people involved with Adolf Hitler were satanists. Many of them were homosexuals. The two seem to go together."

The Pink Swastika has been promoted by anti-gay groups like the Family Defense Council. The FDC's Dr. Howard Hurwitz called the book "a thoroughly researched, eminently readable, demolition of the 'gay' myth, symbolized by the pink triangle, that the Nazis were anti-homosexual."

In fact, while the number of homosexuals who died in the Holocaust does not approach the number of Jewish or Gypsy victims, the historical record shows that between 50,000 and 100,000 men were arrested for homosexuality (or suspicion of it) under the Nazi regime. They were routinely sent to concentration camps and marked with a pink triangle on their prison garb.

They were not systematically exterminated. But huge numbers are believed to have died in the work camps, along with an untold number of homosexual Jews, Gypsies and other "defectives" who were sent to extermination camps.

The myth that Nazis condoned or promoted homosexuality sprang up as a slander against Nazi leaders by their socialist opponents in the 1930s. Only one of the half-dozen leaders in Hitler's inner circle, Ernest Rohm, is believed by credible historians to have been gay.

The "gay Nazi" slander stuck, though, partly because German laws against homosexuals remained in place for a quarter of a century after World War II ended. That effectively silenced many homosexual victims of the Holocaust from telling their stories. A landmark survivor's memoir, The Men With the Pink Triangle, began to break that silence in 1972.

Lively is also the same man who hired a known sex offender at his "Holy Grounds" coffee shop:

Quote:
Police arrest manager of Holy Grounds Co...ed sex offender

SPRINGFIELD A local man who served as manager of the Holy Grounds Coffee Shop on State Street -- a cafe operated by anti-gay pastor Scott Lively that serves free coffee and offers conversation to teenage visitors -- is a sex offender from New York who was imprisoned for the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl in 1995, according to police.

Police detectives on Thursday arrested Michael Frediani, 38, of 453 State St., for failing to register as a Level 2 sex offender in Springfield. He was living in an apartment above the coffee house.

Lively is the same man who responded to the murder of Ugandan human rights advocate, David Kato, with a bizarre theory:

Quote:
Scott Lively's bizarre response to the murder of David Kato

After the brutal murder of a Ugandan gay rights activist Wednesday, a Massachusetts preacher accused of helping incite anti-gay sentiment during a trip to the African nation responded to the killing with a feeble, callous statement. The pastor, Scott Lively, also offered his own bizarre theory about who may have killed activist David Kato by bludgeoning him to death with a hammer.

The killing is still being investigated, but gay rights activists in Uganda have connected Kato's murder to the anti-gay climate fostered by a trip there by Lively and other American preachers in 2009. David's death is a result of the hatred planted in Uganda by U.S. evangelicals in 2009, said Val Kalende, the chairwoman of one of Uganda's gay rights groups. The Ugandan government and the so-called U.S. evangelicals must take responsibility for David's blood.

But in a statement posted on the website Defend the Family today, the Springield pastor made no mention of his 2009 trip, nor did he condemn the murder or offer his condolences. Lively also said he would "caution the media against assuming Cato's [sic] murder was a hate crime."

Instead, Lively suggested Kato may have been killed by someone with whom he had been romantically involved, despite the fact that no one familiar with the case has suggested Kato was killed by a gay person, let alone someone with whom he had had a sexual relationship. There remains a "possibility" Kato was "killed by a 'gay' lover," Lively wrote, and likened Kato's death to that of Carlos Castro, a Portuguese journalist who was allegedly beaten to death and castrated by a male model in New York City earlier this month. The link between Kato and Castro besides the fact that they were both openly gay men who had been brutally murdered is unclear. But Lively has linked homosexuality to violence in the past. In his book Pink Swastika, Lively blames Nazi violence on homosexuality.

I'm not sure why my apology to the people on this thread didn't get posted, most probably something I did wrong

I just wanted to apologize to everyone on this thread for the remarks I made in an earlier post. I should not have diverted attention from the discussion going on here by mentioning anything about Russia. I'm sorry if I brought into the discussion on Uganda things that had no connection with the Ugandan issues that will very soon turn into genocide.

I'm very sorry
