As a survivor that is frustrated with myself for not being further along in recovery and still struggling with some things this book really strikes me where I am at right now:

I really appreciate the author's candor and honesty about his own recovery process and it is a huge help and reminder to be to be patient with myself and give myself time to heal.

Its a process not an event and I have the freedom to keep making progress incrementally without judging myself for not being "done" yet.

you said,
"It's a process, not an event, and I have the freedom to keep making progress incrementally without judging myself for not being "done" yet."

that is beautiful and true.

there was no moment when i could say, "that was the day i got better."

i am always getting better, every day!

this reminds me of the "end of history illusion"

from a Harvard paper...
"people have a fundamental
misconception about their future selves.
Time is a powerful force that transforms peopleís
preferences, reshapes their values, and alters
their personalities, and we suspect that people
generally underestimate the magnitude of those
changes. In other words, people may believe
that who they are today is pretty much who they
will be tomorrow, despite the fact that it isnít
who they were yesterday."

google this phrase to find out more about this psychological phenomenon.
