I have a lot of time to think these days ... and that's not a good thing.

Life = Luck

From the moment sperm meet's egg
... it begins.
Nothing's predetermined ...
not losses ... sure as hell not wins
certainly not purity ...
most sincerely ... many sins.

Call it what you will.
Fate ... Karma ... Chance
it's all just a dizzy dance.
Destiny ... Kismet ...
Divine Will
or better still
the Devil's call ...
there is no handwriting
on the wall.

Some are given a winning hand ...
and like in poker just the joker.
Music soothes the savage beast ...
for some sweet solace is out of reach.
The dance of life must be adept
but some of us just can't keep step
with the tempo of the band.

If you know the game ... but not how to play
are tone deaf ... so can't sway
and if indeed
there is a scroll upon the wall
it wouldn't help ... not at all
what good is it? ...
if you can't read.

In a ballroom
or a two bit joint
the library ...
a casino ...
I don't know ...
I ask myself ...
what's the point?

So you see
I did warn you
I'm bored to death
and now you know it
little Sharky
ain't no poet!

I have, to keep things short, a very long history with poker. Your poem really resonated with me - I like the analogy a lot.

Yes, some are dealt winning hands. But they don't maximize their value.

Yes, some are dealt bad hands. But they power through, bluff if necessary, make others fold and take down the pot.

I agree luck more than anything governs our lives. We don't have any power/control over luck. What we do have though is power/control over how we perceive the luck, how we react to it and over our attitude towards it.

My Story

Growing up isn't about losing innocence - it's about learning how to keep it in a cold and unforgiving world.

Very true Husky.

Power and control, perception and attitude ...
these are key to dealing with the blows that invariably come our way.
but more than those is reaction.

I was all too eager to revel in the wins, and I had more than my fair share of those in adulthood,
although most of them came with very little effort on my part.
The truly important ones were gifts ...
good luck ...
and to my great shame and utter over confident stupidity I came to believe they were my due because of all the patient, silent suffering endured in childhood.
I firmly believe that the bad luck was a direct result of my csa ... it set me apart and unable to fit in.
I barely made it playing the hand I was dealt, music was a double sided coin ... joy and despair,
all I wanted to see was the exit sign and I was tap dancing just as fast as I could.

I got through my youth with little else than shear pigheaded determination that I would
NOT SUFFOCATE
under the load of crap life buried me in.

When I escaped my hell at 18 my dreams came true ... I was rewarded ... I was winning in spades.
At 36 my house of cards crumbled ... the music stopped playing ... and my feet turned to lead.

I subsequently learned to play different games, listened to the cadence of life with what I foolishly thought were sharper ears ... and thought I could see more clearly ...
and I thought I could dance.

Then I got caught with a loosing hand ... the music stopped ... I went blind ...
and my feet were nailed to the dance floor.

Five years ago I changed the game to Solitaire, closed my ears to the cadence of life and stopped listening,
put on dark sunglasses ...
and don't ask me ... I wouldn't dance.

Stupid me.
Not long ago I let Life slink back in
and once again ...
it hasn't equaled Luck.

Ultimately all you can do is pull yourself up, dust yourself off,
bitch to anyone who'll listen ...
and move on.

How I am able to react remains to be seen.

Shyshark and everyone else:

Fantastic poem, with a great attitude and much wisdom in it. Going to re-read many times for myself.

I also like the discussion after the poem. I had a similar thought this past week (it was a new thought to me), thought I'd share it:

It's not how I fight in the battles I choose that determines what kind of warrior I am; how I fight in the battles I didn't choose, in the ones forced on me, likely proves far more.

I don't mean it to sound so stark: I'm not talking about "winning" those battles as proof of anything (Shyshark: I like what you say above about "winning in spades" - I've been there too). In fact, my various attitudes about "winning" (getting overcocky, taking misplaced credit for good luck or the support of others, assuming it will be "all good" from a given point going forward, lacking compassion for others still in the thick of nasty battles, etc.) may prove that I am no winner at all.

Sometimes, maybe, appearing to lose (to others, for instance) because I'm digging down deeper or, sometimes, simply not giving up - despite even sometimes wanting desparately to do so - or despite//because of just how overwhelming and confusing this can all be - theese things can all be winning too. In these battles, perhaps, there are no superficial wounds, but I do need to be wary of superficial attitudes or perspectives. whether my own and someone else's.

In any case, the poem and subsequent discussion were very rewarding reading for me today, which I really appreciate. I'm not much of a commenter, but felt compelled to join in this time.

Thanks for starting it off with a truly deep and all around excellent poem, Shyshark.

I even got a good laugh out of your DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN comment.

Awesome.
