May I add a little for you to consider in your metaphor ?

They see each others light ... and everyone sees the shore,
yet they have a sinking feeling that they may not get to it on their own ...
but the cold angry waves keep them apart.
All each has to offer the other
is a bright speck of illumination in the darkness
and the warmth of knowing that they are not alone.

Shyshark,

I like that a lot. smile I think when I really take the time to look inwards and allow myself to feel the positive things, it's that warmth - the warmth of knowing others are out there and they are quietly pushing me on - that keeps me going.

I have a tattoo of lyrics to a song
That goes...

Maybe you're a lot like me
Identified for 14 years without a choice
Terrified, the morning you woke up to realize
When you jump ship
You can either swim for shore or drown
Don't let the ----ers drag you down

I only have the last bit

(The band is Propaghandi, for any central Canadian punks reading this)

There really are 2 options in my mind
Keep swimming or drown
Not that it's an easy choice, but on we go

Sometimes it seems
the sliver of wood
from once mighty beams
has rotted away
and left me treading
cold and dreading
all alone ... just me
in the raging sea
...
and I lose hope.

I look around
and see you there
sodden and shivering
simply clinging
to your small piece
staring at me
pale faces
warm with care
...
and I have strength.

Trembling hands
reach out for me
and though too far
for them to touch
it's enough
to keep my head
above the waves
until another shard
frozen hard
comes floating by
...
and I am saved.

Even with
souls salt corroded
looking at a shore eroded
we will not go down
without a fight
we have each other
...
in the candlelight.
