Michael Jacques is a figure who rightly deserves the title of "Monster". What follows is a synopsis of his case drawn from Vermont news reports over the past 5 years. A disturbing story which leaves no question about the existance of pure evilin this world.
Jacques has been on Vermont's Sex Offender Registry since a 1993 conviction for aggravated sexual assault involving a female coworker. Yesterday Michael Jacques accepted a plea bargain in Federal court, sparing him the death penalty, and sentencing him to life without parole, for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of 12 year old Brooke Bennett, Jacques' neice, in 2008.
Jacques previously had sexually abused another girl for several years beginning when she was 9 years old. The girl, identified in court papers as J-1, did not attend Tuesday’s hearing. Jacques’ manipulation of J-1 was “the inception of Brooke’s demise,” because he made J-1 believe she would be killed if she didn’t do whatever Breckenridge, a fake organization that Jacques had created, told her to do.
“J-1 received a phone call ... from a man with a scary voice, who ordered her to hurry to her bedroom and look under the pillow,” Nolan said. When she did so, she found a note. The note informed the 9-year-old that she was one of three new recruits selected by Breckenridge, a powerful cartel that arranged for sex training of young girls. The note said the first of the three girls to perform oral sex on a man would live; the other two would be killed.
Over time, Jacques created two Internet identities whom J-1 thought were Breckenridge “agents”. J-1 received emails and, later, phone text messages telling her what the agents — Jacques, actually — wanted her to do, spicing the orders with threats to kill her, her mother or others if she failed to comply.
This regimen continued for over four years, from when J-1 was age 9 until the killing of Brooke, when J-1 was 14. During this period, Jacques produced child pornography, including video images of J-1 engaged in various explicit sexual acts.”
After Jacques was arrested in 2008, police found these videos buried in a swamp behind his home, along with a sneaker that Bennett was wearing the day she disappeared.
J-1 did try to refuse to cooperate with the purported orders from Breckenridge. When J-1 protested — which she did — she received threats. Twice, J-1 found family pets killed, supposedly by Breckenridge, and once, Jacques, after stabbing himself in the leg and getting medical attention, told the girl that Breckenridge agents had attacked him. ... He, too, he led J-1 to believe, was being coerced by Breckenridge.
Jacques decided in early 2008 that he wanted to sexually abuse Bennett and, in emails sent via the two fictitious Breckenridge agents, told J-1 that “Brooke was causing serious problems for Breckenridge, and for J-1’s family.” In June 2008, Jacques had J-1 send text messages to Bennett to invite her to a pool party at Jacques’ home. At Jacques’ direction, J-1 sent Bennett text messages made to look like they were from a boy Bennett was interested in who said he would be at the party. Brooke’s response was enthusiastic. In a text to J-1, she wrote ‘OMG! He really sent those 2 u? That is awesome.’ Brooke’s diary also reflects her contemporaneous entries, saying ‘Yeah, he likes me!!!’”
Bennett sought and obtained permission from her mother to go to the party and to stay overnight at the Jacques’ home the night before, June 24, 2008. The next morning, Jacques and Bennett, accompanied by J-1, got in Jacques’ truck, drove to Randolph and stopped at a convenience store outside town. The store’s surveillance camera caught Jacques and Bennett inside the store and then leaving, with Jacques walking to the right and Bennett to the left. This was a deliberate effort by Jacques to throw police off his trail.
Jacques had told Bennett that the party at his home would have a mystery theme, requiring guests to have done something odd that would make sense only later. Jacques told Bennett her assignment was to walk over the bridge toward town. Jacques then drove around town, picked Bennett up and drove back to his house with her and J-1. An hour later, Jacques told Bennett to join him in a second-floor bedroom where he would show her a “magic trick.” By arrangment, J-1 then left the house and was picked up by her boyfriend at the end of the driveway. Jacques then sexually assaulted Bennett and drugged her with diazepam and alprazalom, two medications Jacques had obtained in liquid form.
Jacques then killed Brooke. He placed a Walmart plastic shopping bag over the girl’s head, tying it taughtly around her neck. Later, he buried Bennett’s body in a shallow grave in the woods near a sugar house Jacques’ family had used in his youth. Finally, Jacques had concocted an elaborate plan before he killed Bennett to throw police off the track as they searched for her. The plan involved telling police Bennett had told them she was going to visit a relative in a hospital and tinkering with Brooke's MySpace page and email messages to make it appear she was rendezvousing with an Internet lover. This online effort was aided by Brooke's former step-father, Ray Gagnon, who lives in Texas and had received some of the child pornography that Jacques had produced.
Jacques also had J-1, now 14, obtain DNA (semen) from her boyfriend, which Jacques then smeared on Bennett’s clothing and placed in the woods in Brookfield, knowing J-1 had told her mother that the location was a place Bennett recently had spoken about.
J-1 was questioned by police June 29, 2008, while the search for Bennett was ongoing. She broke down when confronted with supposed Breckenridge emails found on a Jacques’ computer, which police had seized. At that point, she became very frightened, and expressed fear that her family would be killed. Believing still in Breckenridge, J-1 disclosed the sexual abuse perpetrated by Jacques over the years, the Breckenridge program, and the luring of Brooke to the Jacques residence. It took considerable time and effort to persuade her that Breckenridge was a fiction, and that her highly compromising behavior, in 2008 and before, was all orchestrated by Jacques alone. Subsequently she cooperated with police and revealed her sexual abuse by Jacques and her part in luring Brooke Bennett to her death.
Brooke Bennett's family was present during the plea bargain hearing, and made no comment. In previous comments they had spoken in favor of Jacques getting the death penalty. Jacques will be formally sentenced at a later date, during a hearing where he will be given an opportunity to make a statement.

they shake their heads, they say I've changed.
