I've been asked if I perhaps want to do a half marathon in October 2014.

I'm really tempted to say yes. The problem is at the moment I can't even jog 3 miles non-stop, so i'd have to really train. It is over a year away so I guess that is ok.

Anybody ever done a half marathon before?
Should I do it?

No, but I have been to a Marathon gas station.

With a caveat to physical readiness.., absolutely!

King Tut.

Yes, I have done a half marathon, and in fact, I'm training for another one. I strongly encourage you to train for it. First, you have to be committed to it. It's tough. It's okay to be nervous and wonder if you can do it, but you have to be definitely sure you want to do it.

You need about 6 months to train, so you have plenty of time. It won't take all your time. You can do it if you run 4 x per week, as long as you do it right.

The thing to do is start now, start reasonably, and be smart. You don't want to add more than 10% per week. You'll want to gradually increase your mileage so that you can do at least 15 miles comfortably. In addition, you need to run some 5k and 10 k while training so that you can understand the difference between training and racing.

Good luck, KT. If you need any help please ask.

Dave

Yes, I've done a number of half marathons. Only completed one full one back in '05. The full took a lot more training than gearing up for a half did. Training for a half isn't nearly as time-consuming on a weekly basis.

As long as physically healthy for the activity, you have plenty of time to train for it, so I'd go for it if you are at all inclined. Starting on long distance running doesn't get any easier as one gets older after reaching adulthood.

Actually, this week was my longest workout of the year so far at one time - 10.5 miles. These days I'm much more likely to be content with a 10k - 12k workout as my long one of the week, but do extend it occasionally.

Good luck with your decision. DavoSwim had some good training advice within his short post for you.
