Pathological Transcendental Meditation

He was on top of me sweating
But I mostly remember
The sound of the fan in the window
And the sounds of kids playing outside
My mantra

I was there under him
But I mostly remember
Blue translucent curtains
My picture

And when the heat
The sounds
The blue
Swell in my mind

I know that
That I should have
Been one of the kids
Playing outside

I had to read your poem several times and it's one I think I'll always want to have easy access to. The first time through it hit me like a ton of bricks. I get stuck in "repeat mode" sometimes because I don't quite understand what the writer is conveying. In the case of a poem like this it's because it is either so beautiful or devastating that I succumb to a sort of awe and I'm trapped in that loop for a while. As a poet (wannabe) and survivor this is both for me and is probably the most personally relevant statement I've ever read. Thank you.

Matt,

Thanks for sharing this really painful memory and realization. This really brought me to tears. You should have been out playing, my friend. And it is not your fault that you weren't.
