Ok I've been kind of creating an Ultimate Survivor Teen Angst Playlist in my head for a while - with the view to put it on my iPod. The kind of songs that take you back to those dark and moody times in your teen years when you were just pissed off and you didn't really know why.

As a teen my music taste was probably the only thing that may have made people question if I was as 'good' as I portrayed.

Anyway since I am sure I am not the only one that felt like that as a teenager in the 80s and 90s I thought I would get some input from you guys.....

WARNING SOME OF THESE SONGS WILL PROBABLY TAKE YOU TO A DARK PLACE!!!

I'll start it off with this one....

Warning I am a HUGE Violent Femmes fan and will probably put this whole album up here.

This one still and always will send shivers down my spine. Was obsessed with it in my late teens, especially when I was in therapy. Talk about a song that was virtually about my situation in life and still is. I was actually obsessed with all of NIN's stuff back then but this one has always spoken to me more than the rest.

FB: thanks for the violent femmes; i didn't know I liked them
BF: my contribution to the heavy metal pile; of course it's on the bottom!

So funny thing here. My teen years were not angst ridden because it was all repressed. BUT....my dark side really enjoyed Black Sabbath's first release. I was 7, truly an angel and remember it well. Go figure.

I second violent femmes and Nirvana...

If I have to think back to the 80s, this comes to mind -
Motley Crue - Misunderstood

AC/DC - Inject the venom

The Pixies - Where is my mind

And then the 90's came along, and brought with it Live...

For my Metallica contribution, I'll add "Unforgiven"

And a rather obscure song from Def Leppard that I listened to constantly towards the end of my stay in rehab... It still amazes me how so much pain and anger can be captured in such a quiet song...

Edited to add - oooh yes! Beck... What a song!

Another NIN song. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. So much of Reznor's music is about being sexually fucked up. I've often wondered if he isn't a CSA survivor. I almost feel like I should post this one with a trigger warning.....

Lee, as you know I love music...I always have some kind of song running through my head. Here are a few that aren't necessarily favorites---but which resonate in that certain way...

A little more obscure...The Godfathers "Birth, School, Work, Death (1988)

Queensr˙che "Eyes of a Stranger" (1988)
This group tended toward cerebral metal...and a more left-center view than their peers. This song is part of the concept album Operation Mindcrime which hints at MK Ultra kind of stuff. My own memory of this video is watching it at age 16 I guess...late, late one night when I had a cold and couldn't sleep. It stuck with me.

Another obscure pick from the early 90s. Fury in the Slaughterhouse "Every Generation got its own Disease"(1993)

College was about to wind down and I was in a funk because the real world scared the hell out of me:

And finally...Anthrax "Black Lodge" from 1993. I'm not including the official video since it freaks me out to this day. Kidnapping and re-animation is not my thing...

this is a song i would play at max volume to chase the demons out of my mind.

one day it didn't work.

i smashed and trashed my place,
slashed my wrist, and crashed in the psych ward.

my first round of therapy followed soon after.

listen at your own risk.

suicide soundtrack.

when i met one of the guys from voivod years later in montreal, i told him the story. he said "cool".
he was flattered that his music had emotional impact.

if you really want heavy... forget the metal.

this song was heavier than gold or lead.

i would crank this up and go into a frenzy.

LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

lou reed is a known as a poetic genius, but this song is F____D UP!!! the lyrics are insane and intense.

i was lucky enough to meet mr.reed during his "magic and loss" tour - (1992). i had a blue mohawk and i was covered in leather and chains. i was in my MAD MAX ROAD WARRIOR fantasy phase.

i walked up and shook his hand and told him that blue mask was the sickest song ever written. i meant it as a compliment. he said "thanks" and barely reacted. he seemed pretty jaded.

here is more jaded music.

psychob!tch

crazy b!tch

just plain b!tch

trying to get closer

and of course this zappa classic

if i'm too rough, tell me, i'm so scared your little head will come off in my hands

stick it deep inside

an oasis of pop angst

i know what to do ( at least i used to )

i think i am beginning to see a pattern in my old listening habits.

not a very pretty pattern.
i know i would not like my kids to listen to these songs.

when i was young, wendy O was my dream girl.

while my buddies were drooling over their farrah fawcett posters,
i was obsessed with this ultra violent psycho babe.
i thought if i could only meet her, she would immediatlely recognize me as her soul mate.

NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS!! TOTAL TRIGGER!

never did meet her. she committed suicide in 1998.
i cried when i heard that she died.

her concerts were extremely dangerous events and i was "lucky" enough to attend one of them in 1981(?).
blood, sex, black magic, occult symbolism, nudity,
madness, mayhem, destruction, vandalism and anarchy.
even i was shocked by what i saw on stage and off, and i loved every second of it.

bottles, body waste, and other debris flying throught the air. injuries were everywhere.
it was a miracle that no one was killed, and the security seemed to be non-existent.
i was expecting (hoping) the crowd would explode into a full scale riot and revolution, but they somehome managed to contain the mostly male audience.

driven crazy with testosterone, adrenaline, and alcohol. i was bleeding and exhausted by the time it was over.
we left the arena in wild packs, erupting into the streets, smashing and damaging windows and cars, setting fire to mailboxes and porta-potties, and knocking over signs.

pretty lame and pathetic.

here are more sex angst songs.

sex mad sex mad sex mad

the wages of sin

This song was my introduction to Slayer. It the song who's lyrics are in the quote field of all my posts. RIP Jeff Hanneman. frown

Primus's music and lyrics are normally a little silly and comical. (Also Awesome.) This is one of their more edgy and angry songs. It's lyrics really speak to my own angst, even to this day.

and i thought i knew primus...

you just made a believer out of me.

"I just can't seem to blend
Into society
I have no hope for this dim
Simplicity of law and order
By whose rules I see no rhyme in
the reason
I hold no hope for this holy treason
Of love and so soft
By whose standards
They tell me, they tell me
Who are they, who is they"

-PRIMUS: eleven

that song would have definitely made my top ten playlist back then. the words are so "me" i am surprised i never discovered it before. thanks for that.

not that it is my style anymore.

as i said, i don't really listen to this kind of stuff anymore, but this topic has really put me into the past.
i had no idea how meaningful these tunes were until i just started listening to them today as i searched my mind and the internet.

all of a sudden, i was all teens and twenties again. what a time travel trip. these songs still give me goosebumps. they were an essential part of my venting, escaping, coping routine.
i LIVED inside these songs.
they were a comfortable little room i could crawl into anytime.

i thought that revisiting these old hardcore hate songs might trigger some of the negative emotions that drove me to listen to them in the first place,
but, oddly enough, it has been a very positive nostalgic experience. i feel pretty good.

metallica... but of course.

my favourites from them.

i used to get really hurt at these concerts. some of the most crazy crowd surfing i have ever experienced. i always came out of it covered in blood, sweat, puke. but i would not feel any pain until next day.
when i became a stagehand i was lucky enough to work with this band a few times, and watched the pit from a safe vantage point. i must have been insane. i wouldn't go anywhere near that now, and if i did, i would end up in the hospital.

had a beer with hetfield once, but he was not very nice to me.
kind of arrogant, condescending, and dismissive.
i was so nervous, i forgot his name and he told me it was "lars" with a smirk on his face.
later i remembered it was "james" and it kind of irritated me, but i still think they are amazing artists. no complaints. i made a lot of money off of them through the years smirk and they were very good to their crew. not many bands respect the roadies like metallica.

worked with this band only once, and by that time, the singer had health problems. he had to take oxygen hits between songs. still one of my favourite voices in rock music.

masters of angst get down with the sickness

when i worked with disturbed, it was an indoor club with excellent audio system. i did get introduced to the singer during sound check, but he was really uptight and behind schedule because of border crossing delays so it was very brief and all business.
it is not cool to bother the talent for anything other than professional purposes, so autographs and photos are out of the question at the best of times. if you do anything to stress them out, it results in immediate removal from the venue, and loss of future employment with the promoter.
awesome show.

the darker side of captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy.

i believe black sabbath (with ozzy) never wrote a bad song. these are my favourites.

background story

my mom's boyfriend introduced me to sabbath in 1973 when i was 12.
before that, i listened to elvis, johnny cash, johnny horton, the ventures, the animals, ccr, etc.
good music, but...

i had never heard anything like sabbath before.
i became religious about this band (until ozzy left).

as far as i was concerned, i was being deceived by parents, teachers, police, preachers.
television, radio, newspapers were all lies. only sabbath told the truth.
they were the underground.

geezer is one of the best lyricists in the history of music (my opinion).

black sabbath wasn't just the best band in the world,
they were the only band in the world.
they were number one, with everyone else in distant second place.

i would stack all their LPS on the turntable and listen to "SOLID BLACK" then flip the pile.
we are not talking fan, we are talking fanatic.

in 1976 my absentee father tried to rescue me from jail and juvenile delinquency by shipping me off to his christian sister in germany.
it was verboten to listen to rock music (teufel's musick).

i ran away from her home, and travelled 60km to Köln (Cologne) to see them perform during the Technical Ecstasy Tour.

i got in all kinds of trouble with my family.

it was worth it, in my mind.

23 years later, i was thrilled when ozzy got back on the stage with the original line-up and came to our city.

i was hired to rig the show, which i did, but i quit working as soon as the stage was built and the show was about to begin.

there was no way i was going to be staying straight and sober for this epic event. i was going to be out in the audience where i belonged.

i got in all kinds of trouble with my employer.

it was worth it, in my mind.

i spent my entire musical career trying to recreate their sound.
other bands influenced me, sabbath defined me.

i love this topic. it is taking me down the memory lane.

this was my anthem, all throughout my "extended" adolescence.
tried to hard to imitate this chaos guitar solo style in my own music many times.

the singer for generation X was billy idol.
by the time i got to meet him he was an old man touring the casino circuit, complaining about the quality of the deli tray in the green room (the lettuce was limp).
he still had his trademark hairdo, but it was all business.
punk rock is dead.

i don't wanna grow up

** TRIGGER WARNING **

proceed at your own risk!!

extremely explicit, dangerously dark, and seriously sick songs about child abuse

pain potential is very high

these songs are not fun or funny... they are f__ked.
some are written from the first person perspective of perpetrators.
BEWARE!! WATCH CAREFULLY!

i used to listen to songs like these when i was a broken basket case.

Sorry if this one offends.

It is a catchy song by a local band from my home state that has a deep social commentary ... but I obviously had a darker connection with this song. frown In private it was my anthem.

'I sucked a lot of cock to get where i am....i've got all i want.....i'm on top of the heap....your life is pain you can't complain.....just keep on rinsing out again and again'

Regurgitator - I sucked a lot of cock to get where I am.

A now defunct Atlanta radio station (WNNX 99.7) helped launch those guys in the US. They were all over the radio in the mid 90s with the Frogstomp CD.

I thought it was pretty dark stuff for teenagers to come out with.

i toured across western canada (vancouver to winnipeg) with silverchair. that was 1999 during EDGEFEST .

i saw the singer backstage but never talked to him.
he looked like a lost little boy, surrounded by busy adults.

that tour had a pretty good roster of bands.
econoline crush - age of electric - finger eleven - wide mouth mason - moist - hole - are the ones i remember.

speaking of hole and teen angst

met courtney love only once, and she was wasted.
i remember she had some kind of cast on her arm,
she was pissed off about something that had nothing to do with me.
she was screaming at a buddy of mine, a journalist,
and had security physically carry him out of the stadium.
i was busy making sure they did not kick the crap out of my friend.
she could not find her way to the stage,
but once she got in front of the audience she snapped into show mode.
a consumate professional.

p.s. i asked one of the guys from finger eleven what the name of their band means. he told me. can you guess?

with my favourite song from those guys.

i was on the crew at a concert they cancelled, which turned into a huge riot after the band did not show up. it was the chinese democracy tour only a few years ago. thousands of fans destroyed the exterior of the arena and tore through the streets.

a lot of people went to the hospital that day.
the police started beating everyone guilty or innocent.

i missed the whole thing, because i was not scheduled to return to the building until showtime... a few hours after the announcement.
i still showed up on time for work, but there was broken stuff everywhere. their fans truly had an "appetite for destruction" smirk

well, it wasn't my job to fix anything, or clean up, so we helped the road crew pack their gear in the boxes, put the boxes in the trucks, just like every other rock show. the left town and i got paid.

super creepy song and video.
it was full of triggers for me, especially the chorus.
(going off topic a litte here)
i have done extensive research into the mind-control nightmare.
operations paperclip, pegasus, phoenix, monarch, mk-ultra, montauk, etc.
it is a shame that they need children for their experiments.

extremely sick and shocking sociopathic social engineering.
very disturbing to find out that fact is more f--cked than fiction.

sometimes this is how i feel inside...

it ain't pretty. it is noisy, distorted, chaotic, ugly

"Think about your life; think about your life in the ground
Think about your pain, think about it, then suck it down
Think about the road; think about the road that you're on
Think about your life, now its gone
Face up - And change -
Your time - Displaced -
No way - You're gonna Escape -
If you could see through my eyes
You'll see I'm f--ked up inside"

my generation had its own disease for sure.
we grew up with nihilism, and then we were struck down with aids.
the first wave of that epidemic wiped out half of my friends in the 80's.
most people got it before we even knew it existed.
i was either lucky or immune.
but i had to witness friends, family, and associates die.

"learning to fly, but i ain't got wings
coming down, it the hardest thing.
well the good ol' day may not return
and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn...

some say life will beat you down, break your heart, steal your crown."
- TOM PETTY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai1VM-A60aQ

-----------------------------------------------
during that time, i began the long, lonely, narrow path of masturbation, monogamy and eventually marriage.
so in a way, aids saved my life. going from absolute amorality to abstinence under the threat of death.
it was easy to commit, but hard to follow through.
many times i fell or snuck back into old patterns of risky behaviour.
it was having children that really made me WANT to clean up my act.
eventually this adventure ended up with me reading the bible a lot.
when the bible started to make sense to me, i knew that i was now truly insane, or that i had finally found something spiritual that worked for me.
--------
this whole topic of music is a mine-field of triggers.
it also a treasure trove of keys and combinations to the locks on our minds.

"i am immune to you, you are immune to me, we are both sick souls with the same disease"

this "topic" turned from something fun and nostalgic into a profound soul-searching journey.

as i listen to the songs i have not heard for years (now with headphones and an old man's perspective), plus the new ones being posted by my fellow survivors... deep patterns are beginning to emerge.

we'll all just have to learn to "shake the disease"

more depeche mode here: http://www.malesurvivor.org/board/ubbthr...3883#Post433883

i wonder just how many of these artists were also survivors.
i would bet on a very large percentage.

anyway, i will close with this song which has been running through my skull.

"hold you in his arms yeah you can feel his disease"

bonus: awesome JOE COCKER version from the movie ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

As a teen my music taste was probably the only thing that may have made people question if I was as 'good' as I portrayed.

Anyway since I am sure I am not the only one that felt like that as a teenager in the 80s and 90s I thought I would get some input from you guys.....

WARNING SOME OF THESE SONGS WILL PROBABLY TAKE YOU TO A DARK PLACE!!!

is this not the ULTIMATE angst play list?

i have really enjoyed the music therapy of digging up these old songs that i used to cope. plus i discovered a few new ones that were overlooked or forgotten.

thanks to you, without whom i would never have done this.

i have learned a lot about myself as a result of this research. i actually feel as if this has been more helpful than the exchange of words on the forum.

double thank you.

i knew music was an important part of my life, i just never realized how important it was.

those songs i posted, with all their raw and brutal lyrics, were a great source of comfort and escape for me.

although, sometimes, i wonder how much they helped, and how much they hindered my healing process.

Victor - holy crap when I started this thread I thought I might get one or two songs from a couple of guys... what I got was a music history education. I have NEVER heard of at least half of the songs here. It certainly went somewhere I did not expect. Thank you so much for giving so much of yourself and sharing all the little bits and peices of your life along the way. Fascinating stuff!!! The mind boggles at the thought of how much time you must have put into this. Thank you.I have to admit that I haven't had time to listen to every song ... but I will definitely work my way through it. What I am glad of most of all is that you found it to be therapeutic and that it lead you to some soul searching.

I thank all the contributors for their input .... Will, Ken, Focused, Pero, Crazy Gecko and of course Victor-Victim.

It IS the ultimate angst playlist and I don't think it will ever be finished.

There is something about music that cuts to the core...it reaches us on an emotional level that is hard to explain. For years the only way I ever felt any emotion was through music.

I was having a bit of a rough week after Mothers Day (long story) and was feeling a bit suicidal (don't panic just a bit and it passed as it does). What made it worse was I had this song 'Blackhole Sun' by Soundgarden on repeat in my head - for like a week and a half. Except the word 'rain' changed to 'pain' ... ' Black hole sun won't you come and wash away the PAIN' frown It is gone now...I think.

Guess I still have some angst in me.

The only thing creepier than the downbeat dour music to Black Hole Sun is the video with its morphing-deforming people. GAH.

Another angsty / bitter songs: "Liar" by Rollins Band, and "Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen. That last one plays over the opening credits of the '80s movie Pump Up The Volume and I'd often rewatch the movie just for the song... it really spoke to me even though it gloomed the shit out of me.

robert fripp (king crimson)

I MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH OF ME
BUT I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU

from Robert FRIPP 'Exposure' 1978
vocals: Peter Hammill and Terre Roche
words: Joanna Walton
music: Rober Fripp

That is the way it is because it is that way
It is that way in that it is the way it is
In the way that it is that way that is the way it is
In the way that that is the way that is the way it is that is it is the way
Or, that it is that way is the way it is
The way it is that is the way it is
That it is the way it is is because it is that way
Or that it is the way that it is is the way that it is that
That is the way that it is the way that it is is the way that it's that way

I may not have enough of me but I've had enough of you

That is the way it is because it is that way
It is that way in that it is the way it is
In the way that it is that way that is the way it is
In the way that that is the way that is the way it is that is the way
Or, that it is that way is the way it is
The way it is that is the way it is

you can die from exposure

and while we are on the topic of king crimson guitar genius black humour ...

let us not forget adrian belew's great song about juggling parenthood and a musical career...
