I ran a 5k this weekend for victims of violent crimes. small, community 5k with about 100 people or so. Not my fastest time, in fact it ranged on the slower end. But I finished first, first place overall.

8 years of running 5k's and this is the first I've won and it was the first for a cause I am inextricably linked to.

I felt compelled to say something. I asked if I could. They let me.

I said I was a survivor of childhood sexual assault. What I looked for then, what I look for now is a hug from my mom saying that it's not my fault. I told them this happens, to be aware. 1 in 6 boys, 1 in 4 girls. I implored them that if they suspect something to make the kid feel safe, to hug them and tell them it's not their fault.

We may not be able to change what happened to us, but we can educate people on the issues. We can enlighten them and hopefully change their response.

It was a pretty good weekend.

YOU are a winner in more ways than one!

that was a perfect speech. not too much information - but factual and prompting feelings and action for the kids.

i am SURE there were those in the crowd who needed to hear that.

thank you and congrats,
Lee

Congratulations on winning the race. I run myself and I know the excitement of winning a race. There is nothing like breaking the tape at the finish line. There are many ways to define success in a race. It can be as simple as doing your best time. It may be completing a race that you didn't think you can do. It can also be, like you experienced, the thrill of winning. I hope you have good memories.

More importantly, congratulations on speaking out regarding CSA. The message needs to be spread and people need to hear it. As traveler just mentioned, I'm sure that someone in the crowd needed to hear your message.

I wish you continued success in helping CSA victims and in your athletic endeavors.
