As a boy ... and then a teen
my life was mostly just unseen.
Every day I woke and said
'will this day be spent in dread'
and more often than was not
that's exactly what I got.

As a young man
a new life began.
Everyday I woke and said
'today there's great reason to get out of bed'
happiness awaits me ... that's what I said
sometimes things were kind of blue
but mostly ... mainly ... the joy was true.

As an older man ... all was lost
every memory came at a cost.
Every day I woke and said
'stay where you are ... you're safe in bed'
where did it all go wrong
why is everything ... just gone.

As a man in middle age
there I was, still in a cage.
Everyday I woke and said
'I can't take this anymore ... I should be dead'
I still can't know ... I still can't see
who the hell is really me.

As a man nearing golden years
here I am ... still in tears.
Every day I wake and say
'is this it ... please ... my last day'

I look back now
and wonder how
it came to this.

But then ...

It was different this very morn
yet another chance is born.
Today I awoke ... and this I spoke
'get out of bed ! ... leave your sorrow'

this IS tomorrow!

The moral of this story is
when you wake up ...
when it's your tomorrow
get out of bed and say

'This will be a better day'

(happy birthday to me)
Experience is a brutal teacher.

Shyshark -

i love it!
good poem -
and even better:
an expression of hope and determination!

Great bithday present to your self.
may this year be your BEST yet!

We are often troubled, but not crushed;
sometimes in doubt, but never in despair;
there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend;
and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.
- Paul, II Cor 4:8-9
