This site is so full of stories and experiences of survivors in stages of overwhelming abuse controls, coping mechanisms and recovery progress. I would like to get an idea about what we do for recreation like nature walks, boating, camping, extreme accounting, whatever...

This is what I do...

Geocaching
Motorcycling
Help moderate a male survivor website
I work in a campground as a co-manager, I usually am in maintenance.
I LIVE in a campground, the community is wonderful, yet fickle. There are only a few who know I am a survivor, actually only one right now. The benefits are a gated, older community. It is usually pretty calm.
Watch America's Funniest Home Videos almost every week

Well that's about it, if I remember anything else, I will come back and add it.

What about you?

I love to read, watch movies, do arthritis-friendly exercises, take some low-budget trips and tours... sort of what I've always done, except for the arthritis part.

Great topic...since we all need an escape now and then.

Let's see...Playing with my kids or taking them on a nature walk is great therapy after a bad day...whatever the reason. I love my family, but sometimes I have to take some time to myself to really decompress. My wife and I negotiate time for each of us to schedule "down time" where we can be "off duty." I like:

Geocaching...Yes-I do this too. I started back in about 1997...and still get to do some every now and then.

Cartography...I make maps for fun and occasionally even for profit.

Canoeing...I like quiet solo trips on calm water under tree-shaded stretches of water.

Solo hiking trips in the mountains. Weeks ahead of time I go over my maps and pick an extended loop trip...or even a week-long trek on the Appalachian Trail. I hiked the AT back when I was 18. The solitude and isolation of certain stretches of the trail induce a sense of vulnerability AND self-reliance.

Listening to music...Immersing myself in a good iPod playlist is a natural anxiolytic.

Oh yeah, I like a good baseball or college football game. Braves and Red Sox...UNC Tarheels and UGA Bulldogs.

Will

When I'm not overwhelmed or working on recovery, I honestly just enjoy the status of normal. Picking up or dropping off kids from school, sports, or get-togethers with friends. Calling and writing my grown children in Massachusetts, NYC, Austin TX, and China. Helping with homework. Going to school meetings and doctor's appointments. Doing laundry, dishes, housework, stacking wood for our heat, trimming the dogs' claws. Cooking dinners or making lunches. Going for walks in the woods.

My T is always after me to do something recreational. He doesn't understand that for me, normal IS recreational. Its a whole new experience for me.

Sam, your life sounds really awesome. Going camping with my dad and one of his friends is one of my favourite childhood memories.

When things are good I try to get ahead on projects and essays and all the other boring college things I have to do.
I like to make and trade artists trading cards.
Books, reading them and making them. I just got this spiral binding machine so I can spiral bind my own journals. This is the most exciting thing ever!
I love collecting paper stuff. Like tickets, old book pages, maps and junk mail. I use it in art projects.
I have an obsession with music. I just got Spotify. How did I ever live without this!!! I get obsessed with certain songs and listen to them over and over. (Todays obsessions are Whole Truth - Don Broco, Blinding - Jakwob and The Eton Rifles - The Jam).
I play guitar really badly. And I own a Spongebob ukelele.
I watch a lot of anime.
Hanging out with my girlfriend and other random friends and cousins. Friends are kind of difficult sometimes and I tend to talk myself out of being around them, but I always feel kind of uplifted(?) after being around them.

My life is pretty good really.

Great topic. I hike, go to the gym, read, paint, draw, create glass mosaics... working on a mural on the foyer wall right now.... its going to be beautiful. Watch the sun set, search for rainbows, and enjoy the night sky. This is my new "normal", and I like it.

I wish I could remember that what I did at that time - it has been a while.
