I want to share something that happened yesterday in my session with my T.

At the end of the session, after having talked some of the progress I have made, I likened my present position to being on a steppingstone at the edge of a rapidly flowing stream.

I think I can see the next stone and think I should leap to it, but I am scared. I fear I will slip and be swept away by the stream or, if I manage to hold my balance on the new stone that I will only see another and another and another, each requiring a similar leap.

My T told me that she wants me to stay on the stone I am on for a while and (this is the big thing for me) she wants to stand there with me.

That was an extremely moving moment as I don't recall anyone ever having said anything like that or convincing me that they are actually standing there with me.

I've experienced deep feelings of isolation and loneliness over the years. To finally find a T who sees her role as accompanying me on the journey for however long it takes is an extraordinary experience.

I know that I am very fortunate and am grateful for that.

Hey,guys, your stone got room for me? I've got group coming up on the 7th, I'm anxious about that, but would take comfort on your rock while I build courage for my next leap.
Having one or more in your corner or, "on your stone," can make all the difference. If I won't make it too crowded, I would appreciate the, "safety in numbers," aspect.

Thanks,

David

Stay on that stone as long as you need. It took us along time to get where we are now, so i think it's ok to take thing slow and not think everything is going to be good overnight.

I will be standing there with you.

That's a great metaphor. I'm glad that your T was sensitive enough to pick up on the right thing to say--that tells me that there's the right connection going on and healing's on its way.

Isolation is a killer for me, too. Thanks for your share.

Best,
Scott

Brett,

that is really nice. I am glad that you have such an understanding and compassionate therapist. I think mine is similar, but is more 'in your face' rather. She would probably tell me to wade across, and she'll have the net if I need it! \:\)

Brayton - there are now over 1700 people that come to this site! If we all bring a pebble, then perhaps we can build a path across that stream - you won't get swept away then & you might not even get your feet wet.

We are the bridge to the future....

Best wishes...Rik
