Rob,

That's terrible, but it's a good opportunity to talk to your kids about how they (as normal kids) should rally around the victim and show him that he isn't isolated or alone in his struggle to be himself.

We can't always stop tragedy from happening, but we can help others to respond to it better than how it was handled when we were kids.

I think it is a natural herd reaction for kids to shun a kid who was beaten up so publicly -- it's scary in a bully environment to identify with weakness. So explaining to kids that it's important to fight against this herd mentality is important, I think.

Hopefully, the victim will be OK and will find peers to support his recovery. And hopefully the perp will be expelled, so he's no longer a threat (and interviewed to see if there's any trauma in *his* background that caused him to go rage-monster on the smaller kid).

Hugs.

Jim

I sometimes wonder whether all acts of VIOLENCE are symptoms of mental sickness. I am sorry such a terrible incident happened.
May healing and repair be swift and thorough!!!

Well robby, I'm really sorry this happened, but I'm quite surprised at the reaction. my own experiences as a teenager sort of give me a really biased view of secondary school.

Not that I would individually considder any teenager as wrong in themselves, only that the idea of "a really nice school" seems alien to me, ---- indeed when i read harry potter which is supposedly illustrates the realistic thought processes and relationships of teenagers, I have to mentally remind myself that harry and co are! the ages they are, and often find myself slipping into thinking of Hogwarts as a university full of 18-25 year olds, especially in the later books.

So, while I find what you say about the beating shocking and disgusting, ---- albeit not exactly surprising, I'm really pleased to here kids were so shocked about it and actually recognized it was wrong.

Hey Rob -- imo, hell yes get a report or two or three. The police, the school administration for starters. If a public school, demand answers from the school board. I'd like to know, too, if criminal charges were filed against the bully. DCS/DCF may also be an option if you can do it anonymously and suspect he may himself be a victim of abuse.

You have options, and I'd explore them, to bump it up to the next level - the state - if you're not getting answers. But that's like a trump card and, personally, I wouldn't go waving it around. You know I have some recent experience with similar.

Also, educate yourself about local, if any, and state laws regarding bullying:

From what you've often described in other posts, this may be an excellent opportunity to have more than one issue addressed.
