The times are changing rapidly,
And yet they stay the same,
The weather is a drout because,
we've used up all our rain.

The moon has swallowed up the streams,
And rivers as they flow,
Out from the wells of silence,
down to absolution row.

count dracula is singing,
Through a distorted microphone,
As women praise and judge him,
From a chair that's made of bone.

Little Lucy's crying,
why did my husband have to go,
to be an entertainer,
On Absolution row.

King arthur wears a business suit,
He's writing about peace,
like a conductor he directs,
The knights and the thought police.
they drag away prince charming,
to make him ready for the show,
He's being hung for trying to get,
to absolution row.

snow white in rags and feathers,
Dances the can can,
And puts on all her make up,
to look nice for Peter pan.
she offers him a secret,
She says all men ought to know,
But he's too busy hitchhiking,
to absolution row.

the bus driver signals frantically,
He needs to leave on time,
Yet all the seats are empty,
And the windows full of grime.

the executives are talking,
saying they need to close,
the service route from no where,
to absolution row.

Luke skywalker in the office,
Is applying for a job,

but he just isn't qualified,
sinse he dresses like a slob.

they say he saved a galaxy,
But that was long ago,
And now he's just a drifter,
On absolution row.

In the psychiatric clinic,
The terminator waits,
they say he's been too violent,
and should be off the streets.

They're going to sterilize him,
And pour soap down his nose,
to rid his mind of thoughts he found,
On absolution row.

The children go to lessons,
inside a steel cage,
With ogres on their lunchboxes,
And monsters on the stage.
the teacher tells a story,
About the ant who stayed at home,
And so dodged the pesticide they poured,
On absolution row.

The soop kitchin is open,
The people walk inside,
Where Captain Kirk is serving them,
with bowls of cyonide.
They dress us up as devils,
So we don't here gabriel blow,
the silver trumpets that he plays,
on Absolution row.

The sculptor swings a hammer,
to make the stone chips flie,
His statue is a zombie,
with a mona lisa's smile.
There's a guarden with no statues,
where only flowers grow,
It's address is number 42,
On absolution row.

the white witch wears a designer coat,
And she's smoking a cigar,
she's waiting for her shofer,
who drives a big black car,
She's got a booking for tonight,
on a famous tv show,
The one they reffuse to broardcast,
on absolution row.

The zoo keepers are searching,
With their flashlights and their steaks,
They're looking out for mowgly,
And tarzan of the apes.
If they can't find them by midnight,
they'll just take the van and go,
To round up a bunch of transients,
from absolution row.

If you phone the fire service,
You'll see how quick they come,
yes they'll really burn rubber,
Fahrenheit four fifty one.
But on pleasant summer evenings,
You can see the glowworms glow,
Because there's no fires late at night,
On absolution row.

There's a list of acknolidgements,
I really ought to name,
But I can't remember all of them,
And there are lots that I don't mean.
So I'll just give them random titles,
As nobody will ever know,
sinse I'm going to throw out all my lists,
On absolution row.

Bob dyllin's ghost is calling,
When the clock is striking one,
He asks me to write down his words,
but now I'm nearly done,
I hope I've heard him properly,
he was speaking very low,
And I think he gave directions,
to absolution row.

wow - really surreal - i like it.
could probly spend hours trying to interpret it - like Don Mclean's "American Pie" - one of my faves!

Well part of that is that I based a lot of the ideas on Bob Dylan's song desolation row, which also has quite surreal lyrics that reference a lot of random people but don't particularly indicate what they're about (indeed I get the idea Dylan wasn't in a legal state of mind when he wrote much of it), though obviously desolation row is a very different concept to absolution row albeit that they both scan the same.

I will say though that most of what is there I put in for a reason, indeed slightly more so than usually when I write poetry.

indeed, in some ways this is a little different, or had a different inspiration, sinse the poetry I've written before tends to be more about what I happen to be feeling or thinking at a particular moment, where as this was sort of intended to be a little more of a social commentary, though still personal in parts.

I'm not sure if it works or not though, indeed I feel sort of pretencious for even trying something like this.

American pie is wonderfull for images and lyrics, I agree, though probably my favourite person for that is still leonard cohen, there are parts in several of his songs that leave me absolutely cold.

yeah - dylan's lyrics are sometimes great - i just can't stand to listen to him sing - so i've missed a lot of them.

ps - since you are a singer, it is natural that this reads like lyrics to a song. did you write a tune for it - or have one in mind? have you written whole songs? i bet you'd be good at it!

I agree on hereing dylan sing, the man just couldn't hold a tune! though that is one thing Leonard cohen can do, indeed I find his voice quite unique to listen to.

In writing the above I did slightly have the structure of the song desolation row in mind, ---- though I believe I use less lines on each verse than dylan did.

As to writing songs, this is something that unfortunately gets to be a problem, sinse I can't read or write music, and though I have composed things it tends to be limited to what I can sing or play on the piano (and I'm not exactly the world's best pianist, and often have ideas I can't actually play).

Finding a way around this, and getting to the point where I could! actually produce printed music that I could give to someone else to sing, or play for me while I sang is something i will be looking at doing in the future.
