This is the kind of stuff that fuels my self-doubt. (My abuse wasnt with a women but I was 13) There's nothing funny about rape and Adam Sandler's new movie 'That's My Boy' by Dr. Keith Ablow FAIR USE EXCERPT: Adam Sandler’s new movie, “That’s My Boy,” should be BOY-cotted by anyone who believes that statutory rape of a 13-year-old is wrong. That sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? I mean, after all, “That’s My Boy” is a comedy that makes light of the seduction and statutory rape of a 13-year-old boy by his pretty teacher -- a rape that results in the birth of a child. Yet, Hollywood thinks it knows two things: 1) Sex sells. 2) Little boys do not need or deserve the same protections from sexual assault as girls because they actually like it. They’re entirely right about sex selling, of course. In our almost hopelessly repressed culture just about anything, including a movie with such a sordid premise, can reawaken the sexual feelings we tend to wall off and deny. And yes, those same feelings will get some people to part with a little time and a little cash for a movie. Hollywood writers, producers and directors are entirely wrong, however, about believing that 13-year-old boys are fair game sexually for adult women because the boys will enjoy going to bed with them.

American TV has satirized tragic events in many TV shows. "South Park" and "Family Guy" come to mind real quick when I think about this topic. No one started screaming when topics like this are made fun of in those shows. It sounds like the writers are trying to poke fun at Mary Kay Letorneau, et al.
I don't think it is anything to be upset about. It will, at the end of the day, bring awareness yet again to CSA.
As for Adam Sandler personally, he is like any other actor. I have seen movies of his I absolutely love like "Grown Ups." I have also seen movies of his that I can't stand like "You Don't Mess with the Zohan."
There is nothing saying that you HAVE to go see this movie. Feel free to exercise your choice not to see this movie.
Brian

Brian, I say this with all due respect because I know your a good guy. But it seems like your dismissing this because your frustrated about the lack of awareness and concern for adult sexual abuse/rape. However as much as you are right about the lack of help, that doesn't mean we should neglect child sexual abuse/ rape and the myths that go along with it. I am for awareness and treatment of all sexual abuse/ rape. Whether it be boys, men, girls or women.
I hope that adult abuse/rape gets the attention it deserves soon

Just look at the post about Corey Feldman talking about the rampant pedophile problem in Hollywood. These people are sick. ***possiible triggers*** I would have to find the post I made but I once wrote about a movie called "Let's go to prison" where they have a scene of a young boy 7 or 8 reading a letter sent to him by a prisoner which contained lots of cursing and the statement that the prisoner wanted to cut the balls off the judge that put him there.

Anyone catch the episode of Weeds (I wanna say Season 2, Episode 4) where the character "Shane", who is somewhere around 8-10 gets taken to a massage parlor to "get laid". He's then shown smiling afterward. Of course, why am I getting pissed off? We've all seen lighthearted stories about 10 year old girls being taken to male masseusses to get raped. Right? Remember that? No? Oh yeah, it doesn't exist. Hollywood is full of demented, warped people. I can't fkg believe what you say here. I mean, I believe you...but WTF? Is "Shane" the same kid who gets a "masturbation lesson" from a friend of the mother? Let's all just drop the troublesome pedo laws. Heck, you could buy kiddy-porn in NYC right up 1982 without breaking any law. Now with the internet, you need no news stand to sell it. But fortunately, OUR FBI and maybe Interpol shred those sites and block their entry to the USA. But there's no public outcry over HBO's Weeds perverts or Madam Sandler's warped little games. I have NO reason to think they care one bit. If its selling on the screen, and met with a snicker and wink...well, we know where the 1-in-6 comes from, don't we. Another shit-sandwich is served.

Yeah, the same Shane from the masturbation lesson. I saw that, too. Unbelievable. Well, am I prudish, or off-track in any way? Cuz I saw that 'lesson' as being shoved down Shane's throat inappropriately. If he asked for such a talk, it could have been done in a less-crass manner. But with the look on his face, he did not want to be there listening to a 40yo 'teach' him ALL about masturbation. His mother asked that guy to talk to Shane and give him advice so as not to "mess-up socks." Right! Bull Sht!! It was just a foil for the producer to kick-down another personal boundary and smash it to bits for all of society to leverage. The slick 'talk' was of a very very taboo subject for boys that age. They don't want to talk about it in general, and certainly not with a 40yo man. I would have been mortified into the ground if i were in Shane's shoes. Microwaved bannana peels????? WTF!

My son is 11. They had the "lesson" at school a few weeks ago. The one where they talk only about the changes their bodies are going to go through etc. It mentions "erections" and "wet Dreams" but nothing actually about sex at this point. Just the "What to expect" kinda thing.
He was so HORRIBLY uncomfortable with the whole deal. Although him and I had talked about a few things previously, so it wasn't like it was all new ground for him.
So yeah.... I've never watched "weeds" and am so happy that I haven't. The deal is, the TV/Movie industry is obviously rife with those who either A. Don't care who they hurt or B. Wish they could actually be the ones doing the hurting.

There are so many reasons that this is just so wrong. The tired argument that it has never been an issue before ignores the fact that we are supposed to be more enlightened about this than we were in the 70's or 80's or even the 90's. That enlightenment should result from a better educated public and lead to deeper sensitivity of the topic ... not traits I have associated with Sandler in the past. Adam Sandler makes a joke out of statutory rapeAnd about the idea that if we get "too sensitive about normalcy impeding on our world, we'll bash anything we think is an afront," I might respectfully add that I find those arguments usually reveal the problem to be insufficient sensitivity on the part of people who have no stake in the matter rather than oversensitivity on the part of those who do. Many of us here at MS know that all too well - whether we are survivors of CSA or of adult male sexual assault. I personally believe that it is that very line of thinking that ultimately excused otherwise responsible adults from intervening in the Penn State sex scandal. The solution in the final analysis is education - opening our eyes and ears and widening our perspectives of others. We ARE our brothers' keepers - that's called humanity.

When is the release date for this film? In the UK they're hoping to escape any bad press (and the Olympics) with a mid-September release.
So for the moment, if That's My Boy is a Sony/Columbia movie it makes more sense to boycott Spider Man as well, that's the more immediate money maker. Then I just have to hope that the BBC isn't dumb enough to buy it in a rights package for TV.

...movies like that featuring Sandler are all "pushed" by guys like Jay Lenno, Dave Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel Maybe we should be writing to these hosts and request that they ask Sandler about how he squares promoting his movie this way with actual survivors and families of survivors who know it is no joke. My impression is that Letterman is particularly savvy, sensitive, and smart about related issues, direct and peripheral, whereas other hosts tend to keep a more narrow focus on the laughs. I could be wrong - but I've seen Letterman do that. Even more so, I would imagine Jon Stewart would certainly create a challenge.

A movie that seems to me to be somewhat similar is named The Graduate. It came out at the end of 1967. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061722/It features a young guy being seduced by a married woman. I felt scandalized by the movie then. The world was a simpler place then, but I had a lot of emotions from my own traumas. Now that I look at the trailer, it seems that the publicity on The Graduate was geared to seduce the potential viewer. Puffer

Office the Chairman & CEO Mr. Michael Lynton Sony Pictures Entertainment 10202 West Washington Blvd. Culver City, California 90232
Lynton runs it all. Use all appropriate salutations and be respectful (not saying you won't) above all if you want a reply. Use facts and a short personal story. That's what they listen too. Boycott language and I doubt the respond at all. You can make your point better if you tell them why you object from personal experiences and the facts about child rape.
