Not saying you get abused and like magic you get diabetic but some people use drugs, some people drink, I overeat. This is no doubt the reason for my diabetes. He didnt say it and come right out but he said (my doctor) that I have elevated blood sugar (221 I believe) and he wants me to go on a low carb and starch diet and stay away from sugar. That and it was marked that way on the sheet I had to give to the secretary to pay (250.02 diabeties type II, non insulin dependant)

Why does it have to get to this level before it sinks in? Why do I think that I may not even take this advice and follow this diet?

The shrink I saw for SS disability had no doubt my hyperthyroid and congestive heart failure was CSA/child abuse related. I read studies that said up to 64% of CSA victims get heart problems. Take care of yourself. Diabetes can get way worse. Sorry man.

I look at the hyperthyroid/CHF this way: All I've ever done my entire life was survival mode. I've lived on adrenaline for everything. A light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, Tyrell said in Blade Runner. True. A constant state of awareness wears out a body.

The GOOD NEWS is that we are all learning better eating habits and about nutrition, carbs, sugar, the body, exercise and health. Good luck. Your new knowledge will show you the way.

It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
It gives a lovely light."
- Edna St. Vincent Millay

You are a bright light, Phoenix.

Food is one of the ways we try to numb ourselves. It also serves, as it's been called 'comfort food,'...to comfort ourselves. It's a nurturing act, or it should be if done in a healthy manner.

My sister and I were tortured and sexually abused by our father. We each battled a number of coping mechanisms, with food issues being one of the main ones. My sister tried to live a normal life but the very day she became engaged at age 18 she went full force into being clinically 'morbidly obese.' It was unbelievable how she tried to turn her body into a physical barrier while emotionally crying out to connect with others.

Her inner conflict led to passive-aggressive behavior, and eventually full-on anger and a cruel demeanor. She punished anyone who tried to help her and she ostracized everyone who tried to help her. She died under suspicious circumstances at 54, bitter, alone, and isolated from her loved ones. The coroner couldn't even be bothered to run a blood test to determine a cause of death. When I pressed for answers a spokesman from the sheriff-coroner's department barked, "Sir, your sister was fat and now she's dead. You're just gonna have to accept that."

This is one of the main reasons I encourage survivors, men and women, to seek professional help in finding our way through this journey. This web site is an excellent supplement to therapy.

You are not alone, by any means, on the food issues, but we can learn to manage them through the encouragement and suggestions we all give each other here.

Good news is that I am feeling better, less anxious and tired. Don't know if this is due to the diet or perhaps it's because my doc doubled my blood pressure meds. I've also been drinking a lot more water cuz they say diabetes can dehydrate you.

Not the best but I'm finding stuff I can eat. I'm sure I'll find more as time goes on. You may be seeing a lot more posts from me as now I no longer can numb by eating (or atleast nothing all that good lol )

That is really good news Jason!
I would love to know more about your progress with diet, please share with us in future.
Have you been considering involvement of some regular sport activities in your regime? You could benefit a lot from it.
I've found many benefices from my hobbies like playing tennis and cycling. Those also have boosted my self esteem and brought positive and affirmative attitude. I even made some new friendships on some sport courts smile ...

Sugar Buster's Diet.

http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Sugar-Busters-Trim/dp/0345469585/

This book has really helped me. I had to learn what's really in foods. I lost weight and felt better.

But that wasn't the end of the matter. I had to work on food allergies and food irritants. I'm still working on that angle.

Survivors have a lot of body issues to be solved.
