Father Michael Kelly of Stockton, California was found guilty by a civil jury of sexual assault of an altar boy in the 1980s at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton.

What makes this case unusual is that Kelly's supporters from his congregation showed up in droves every day in an effort to intimidate the jury and the victim.

Read the comments by them in the news story below after he was found guilty yesterday. Sickening. They even attack SNAP, the group for victims of priests

Then Kelly- who has been removed as a priest, gave a tearful "I'm innocent" speech to his congregation. Very inappropriate of him.

Both the victim and Kelly testified at the trial. Here's what Tim Lennon of SNAP had to say about the victim's testimony:

Both Kelly and the plaintiff testified, and the alleged victim's courtroom breakdown was one of the defining moments of the trial, according to a man who attended multiple hearings.

"He was in Day 2 or 3 of testimony and cross-examination, and he had an outburst," said Tim Lennon, of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. "He pointed and yelled, 'You raped me, I was just a kid,' and it came from the very core of him as a person. It hit me to my heart, and I assume it had a similar effect on the jury."

Thanks to Kelly's victim for his courage and bravery. Congratulations to lawyer John Manly ( who appeared in the documentary about abuse "Deliver Us From Evil" ) for his win. There are many other victims of Kelly out there. Please contact the police, or get a lawyer. There are sure to be in statute victims out there, and they could help build a criminal case against Kelly.

The plaintiff's attorneys also argued Kelly had victimized multiple children, but testimony from an alleged second victim was not allowed into trial.

Here's a description of Kelly's sickening "I'm innocent" speech to his congregation yesterday:

Three hours after hearing the verdict in his civil trial, a teary-eyed, choked up Michael Kelly faced an emotional congregation.

Earlier that afternoon, he was held liable on three counts of assault, sexual assault and abuse. He had been removed as a priest, stripping him of the ability to lead his congregation just before Easter.

"Practically speaking for now, and several years to come, I cannot be your pastor anymore," he said as his voice cracked. "It breaks my heart, but I can't. That is the way it is written. As much as I love all of you, I have to obey what the rules are."

Yet he maintained that he is innocent, and reaffirmed his plans to keep fighting.

"I am disappointed in the verdict," he said. "The charges against me are not true — they didn't happen. These allegations aren't tru
e."

More than a hundred parishioners gathered at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Lockeford, where Kelly has served as priest since 2004. The churchgoers hugged one another, clutching tissues and listening to Kelly's every word through bloodshot eyes.

Thank you pluck,
This is the evidence that proves that those perpetrators who are protected from the law by outright accomplices and those who through tacit approval ignore and deny the actions have no remorse, no guilt and no morality.

Please respond to pluckmemory, please let him know that there are others out there that have survived, and find healing relief.

I ask all his supporters in the parish if their child had been a victim--a there is always the possibility because victims do not always come forward until decades later-would they be standing there today in support. It sickens me. It seems people only think of themselves, brainwashed by the institution and a child of another parent is disposable to some people. Victims at all ages are the victims over and over again-family members deny them and believe the almighty priest is a hero and proclaim the victim a liar--this is how it feels when I read of the blatant ignorant support this priest has received. I can tell being Catholic I can see many people I know walking in support of the priest and saying victim get over it or you are full of sh**.

Hopefully he never returns to coach and guide young people. And I hope the supporters do not wake up one day and learn their own child was abused and feared telling anyone including them--does the environment of support created by adults make a child comfortable speaking of their abuse. Hell no in my mind.

Canon "law" says that Catholic clergy can lie, if they think it's necessary to protect the church. Looks like the parishioners feel free to chime right in! They must be so embarrassed by the behavior of their priests that they want to shout down any more bad news.

On April 6, 2012, a civil jury unanimously found Father Michael Kelly guilty of sexually assaulting a 37 year old man when he was ten years old and an altar boy at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton.

In addition to working as a priest at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton, Kelly has also been the priest at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Lockeford from 1994 until last week, when he was forced to resign.

We know that there are many victims of Kelly out there who have too afraid to come forward. Now, the brave victim who spoke out in the civil trial has paved the way for you; please come forward.

I am a victim's advocate and not affiliated with law enforcement. If you are a victim of Father Kelly, or know of one, please send me a private message here and I will send you my phone number.

STOCKTON - The jury in a civil trial found that Father Michael Kelly should be held liable on three counts related to child molestation, according to the lawyer of his accuser.

Attorney John Manly said Friday a civil jury unanimously agreed his client, a 37-year-old man identified in court papers as John TZ Doe, was molested by Kelly while Kelly was a priest at Annunciation Cathedral in Stockton. The plaintiff was a student at Annunciation school in the 1980s.

Pluckmemory--glad you are here and an advocate for the victims. It seems there are so few, more people who put on their rose colored glasses and make victims the victims once again. I can only image how the victims feel when they see the Kelly supporters cheering and crying for the abuser--if it was my abuser I would be sick to death of the hypocrisy of the institutions and people. Keep up the great work.

Thanks! The William Ayres blog is asking for victims of Father Kelly to come forward.
By the way: John Manly, the lawyer for the Kelly victim appeared in the Academy Award nominated documentary "Deliver Us From Evil" about another pedophile Stockton priest named Oliver O'Grady. Apparently, O'Grady and Kelly were friends.

The Stockton Record is reporting that tests show that Kelly had "pedophiliac tendencies" and was sent away for "behavioral issues"
http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120413/A_NEWS/204130321

A Catholic priest recently found liable for sexually assaulting an altar boy by a civil jury had been sent to a behavioral health center to be evaluated on his sexual deposition several years before the alleged rape occurred.

The former priest of St. Joachim Church in Lockeford, Michael Kelly, showed pedophilic traits in a psychological evaluation ordered by the Diocese of Stockton, but the test results were inconclusive, said John Manly, who is representing the former altar boy.
______
___

Sent to a treatment center for "behavioral issues.."; parents' complaints about inappropriate behavior; "pedophiliac tendencies." This same story has played out all over the country.

I am a victim's advocate who is urging victims of Kelly to come forward. We know there are many others out there. We are asking that anyone with information contact us: jsomerville5@yahoo.com. Or you can send me a private message here at Male Survivor.

Kelly flees to Ireland:

http://www.news10.net/news/local/article/189852/2/Convicted-Stockton-priest-flees-to-Ireland

STOCKTON, CA - A Diocese of Stockton priest recently convicted of three counts of child molestation and under investigation for an alleged similar crime has gone back to Ireland.

Father Michael Kelly, who served at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Lockeford, was convicted April 13 in a civil trial of molesting a former altar boy at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton in the mid-1980s.

With the conviction, Kelly, who had continued to serve at St. Joachim Catholic Parish in Lockeford, was removed from his duties by Stockton Bishop Stephen E. Blaire.

In a separate case, Kelly has been under a criminal investigation since last September on allegations he molested an altar boy at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in San Andreas in the early 2000s.

Anyone know what the extradition treaty is between Ireland and the US?

Perhaps Kelly will visit his old pal Oliver O'Grady, the defrocked Stockton priest (who served at the same church as Kelly) who is now serving three years in an Irish prison for possession of child porn:

http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2012/01/3...d-porn-charges/

A former Stockton priest who was defrocked for molesting children and whose story was made into an award-winning documentary on sex abuse in the Catholic church has been sentenced to three years behind bars on child porn charges in Ireland.

The Irish Examiner reports Oliver O’Grady admitted to three counts of possession of child porn after leaving his computer on a flight from Amsterdam in December of 2010.

The 66-year-old was the subject of an award-winning 2006 documentary, “Deliver Us from Evil,” in which he talked openly of abusing more than 20 children as he was shuffled from one parish to another in California through the 1970s and 80s.

John Manly, attorney for the Kelly victim has his hands full. First, Kelly flees the US for Ireland for -ahem- medical treatment for his "ulcers."

Now Cardinal Roger Mahony is a no-show at the trial. So Manly is filing contempt charges against him.

Contempt Charges sought against Roger Mahony

http://www.lodinews.com/news/article_9dbe3470-b30e-53be-92c4-1d8740a31459.html

Lawyers for the man who won a civil case against former Lockeford priest Michael Kelly are seeking contempt of court charges against Cardinal Roger Mahony.
Mahony was bishop of the Stockton Diocese from 1980 to 1985, during the time Kelly reportedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy who attended Church of the Annunciation in Stockton in the mid-1980s. A jury ruled on April 6 that Kelly is liable of sexual assault.

The plaintiff's attorneys, led by John Manly, filed an application on Monday for a court order requiring Mahony to state why he shouldn't be held in contempt of court for failure to appear as a witness in the second phase of the civil suit against the Stockton Diocese.

Calaveras County law enforcement officials Tuesday said they were still deciding what to do about the Sunday flight of former Catholic priest Michael Kelly, who is under investigation for accusations he abused a former altar boy at a San Andreas church.

Sheriff Gary Kuntz said he was meeting with investigators and representatives from the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office to discuss options, including possible extradition.

Good for the victim who won the civil suit:

But in a statement released through his attorney, the alleged victim called on law enforcement officials to investigate how Kelly was allowed to stay in the ministry after it was clear he posed a danger to children.

The victim who won the civil suit, Travis Trotter, breaks his anonymity at a press conference yesterday to announce the settlement. He also calls on law enforcement to investigate how Kelly was allowed to stay in the ministry for so long.

Photo of adult Trotter with a photo of him at the age he was raped by Father Michael Kelly. What a brave man to come forward, face the scorn of Kelly's supporters and then break his anonymity in an effort to encourage other victims to come forward.

There's a San Mateo County connection (same county that has messed up the Dr. William Ayres case) to the Kelly case.

A man who was taught by Father Kelly at Annunciation School in Stockton, and whose family home Kelly visited constantly when he was a child- went on to be charged with molesting his young daughter in San Mateo County. That case was thrown out by fraudulently thrown out by prosecutor Melissa Mckowan (now under investigation for misconduct in the Ayres case).. That man later died unexpectedly in his early forties.

Then his brother died of alcoholism, six months later.

It is believed that Kelly molested both of these men when they were altar boys at Annunciation School.

And the criminal investigation against Kelly continues:

http://www.mymotherlode.com/news/local/1607386/Father-Kelly-Facing-Criminal-Charges.html

Excerpt:

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office has been investigating additional allegations made against the priest. Kelly has reportedly returned to his native Ireland. If additional charges are brought against Kelly, it could potentially lead to him being extradited back to the U.S.
Sheriff Gary Kuntz has released the following statement, "The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is currently completing interviews with persons associated with the Father Kelly case. Attempts are being made to locate potential witnesses and victims, however this effort is complicated by the fact that many persons now reside out of the area. One Detective from the Sheriff's Office is specifically assigned to the case, and it is the intention of the Sheriff's Office to submit a report to the District Attorney within the next 30 days."

The Sheriff's Office notes that no further information will be released until the full report is submitted to the DA's Office.

Meanwhile, cowardly Kelly, while hiding out in an Ireland rectory, sends his supporters a sickening and narcissistic email:
http://www.lodinews.com/news/article_fa674011-c369-5617-a133-1f16c54a69fb.html

The first thing I want to tell you all is that none of you have any idea how much your support and your prayers continue to mean to me. It was those prayers and support that got me through the past four and a half nightmare years, and especially the court case and its unjust verdict. I did none of those things I was accused of.
Some people have emailed me of other allegations being brought up, I can tell you that I did none of those things, either. I will maintain my complete innocence until my last breath. God knows, and I know, that it isn't true.

New story on continuing criminal investigation into defrocked Stockton priest Michael Kelly:

"New Allegations Surface Against Defrocked Priest"
http://www.calaverasenterprise.com/news/article_75df0cb6-cab2-11e1-87fe-001a4bcf887a.html

Former San Andreas priest Michael Kelly faces renewed sex abuse allegations this week after Stockton attorney John Manly confirmed he will press ahead with litigation on behalf of several new clients.
An untold number of accusers have come forward to police and attorneys across three counties after a civil trial against Kelly ended in a $3.75 million verdict last April.

____

We understand that an anonymous Kelly victim has contacted SNAP in recent weeks. We encourage him and ALL victims of Michael Kelly to contact the following:

-Attorney John Manly: 949-252-9990

-Sgt Chris Hewitt at the Calaveras County, CA Sheriff's office: 209-754-6500

This part of the story is EXTREMELY disturbing. Despite numerous victims having come forward, some of Kelly's parishioners have grouped together to provide funds that aided him in his flight to Ireland before the end of the civil trial in April:

Both [Sgt] Hewitt and Manly referred to lag time in the investigation of Kelly cases. Each also suggested that Friends of Father Kelly, an advocacy group that helped fund Kelly’s flight to Ireland, was freighting an already lengthy legal process.
“(Investigations) is way backed-up. (Investigator Wade Whitney) is dealing with an officer-involved shooting while still trying to track down alleged Kelly victims and witnesses,” Hewitt said. “Friends of Father Kelly is just piling-on, emailing him, sending him letters, just hindering his investigatio
n.”

Now how ignorant can people be? It is truly disturbing, but I have experienced worse reactions to abuse from supposedly educated people. It is like the blind leading the blind-learned behaviors. My heart goes out for the victims and their families. Why did the police lag so long?

Four days ago, a man came forward to say that the former priest Michael Kelly groped him multiple times when he was 11 years old, in 1983, as an an altar boy at St.Bernard's School, in Tracy California. The man said that there were rumblins that Kelly was asked to leave St. Bernard's because of incidents with boys.

Kelly is still hiding out in Ireland somewhere. Meanwhile the Sheriff's office in Calaveras County continue to interview new Kelly victims who have come forward.

If anyone who is reading this was molested by Father Michael Kelly, please contact attorney John Manly in Newport Beach, CA: 949-252-9990

or Sgt. Chris Hewitt at the Calaveras County Sheriff's office in California:

209-754-6500.

Michael Kelly worked at Fatima Church in Modesto; St. Bernard's in Tracy; the Annunciation School and Presentation School in Stockton, California; St. Andrew's Church in San Andreas, CA and St. Patrick's in Sonora, Ca.

Kelly also started the Modesto Soccer League for boys and acted as a referee.

Let's nail this guy and get him criminally prosecuted.

To paraphrase Weird Al, "Boo-ya! They'll sue ya!"

Keep speaking up, CSA survivors. I know of one perp who got away with it, so rat one out for me. And meanwhile, Peace.

There's a lunatic fringe of Kelly supporters who call themselves "The Friends of Father Kelly" who have been trying to interfere with the criminal investigation into Kelly, according to the Calaveras Sheriff's office. They have also gone after civil attorney John Manly, who represents the three victims who have filed suits against Kelly: http://www.modbee.com/2012/11/10/2451062/rev-michael-kelly-rejects-3rd.html

SNAP in northern California has stated that they have been contacted by several victims of Kelly, but that these victims have not yet gone to the police. They need to do so immediately.
