Hi,

I applied for disability because of the hyperthyroid and CHF. Hyperthyroid caused the CHF. It sucks to be sure. It sucks even more when you have no health insurance and no access to care for it.

I've tried to find other ways to get help. Disability can take up to 3 years to get. I see a doc at the health department and he's just treating the symptoms not the disease. He's a really nice, caring guy.

In 2006, 45,000 people died because of no healthcare or lack of quality healthcare. The latter will be me if I don't find something else. I just don't know what to do. I know the CHF and hyperthyroid are bad because I feel like I have a cold all the time.

I don't qualify for Medicaid since I already met all my quarters as they call them. I've looked at charities in Florida. Catholic Social Services had nothing. Florida is one of the worst states as far as caring for it's sick people. The free medicine here in Florida costs more than the pre>

No answers. Either no one cares or no one knows what to say. Disappointing.

Have you researched any clinical studies for hyperthyroid conditions and/or congestive heart failure? On virtually all trials, both the medications and frequent medical examinations by specialists or residents are covered 100% for the course of the trial.

I care.

Eyesforward,

The only thing to do is a thyroidectomy (removal). After that, my heart might be okay and the CHF resolves itself. Only thing they can do when you have goiters. It's about $100-125,000 with all the tests. Thank you for the information. You're a doll. xoxo

I care as well, and needed a definition of CHF. I am no more able to offer relief, just wanted you to know I care too.

Have you approached endo's and cardio's in practice and asked them if there was a solution to your situation they could offer?

Sam

Not sure where in FL you live but have you considered researching to find out what hospitals in a reasonable distance from you have a good cardio department? Maybe if you went to the ER there you might have some better results.

Thank you, Sasuva and Onlyakid, for your kind words.

CHF is congestive heart failure.

Actually, yeah, looked into the U of F place Shands and our worthless Gov. Scott cut the programs there. They used to offer free stuff because it's a teaching hospital. But, Gov. Scott ended the funding for all the teaching hospitals connected with Fla. Universities.

I tried to get insurance about 9 months ago and they denied it based on the hyperthyroid. They said don't even bother applying. Then, got the CHF and insurance co. never cover anyone with heart issues. To sick to work but even when I wasn't, I'm basically useless to companies because I'm 40 or over even though I've got a degree and lots of experience.

I've met people my age with doctorates that were refused jobs and even an interview.

I used to think America was a great country until all this stuff. I don't anymore because Ron Paul and Rick Santorum basically said, "go and die if you don't have insurance" in that early December GOP debate. Tea party folk actually cheered the question about a person dying with no insurance during that debate when they asked, "do you just let him die?"

It's really sad that 50% of America has become heartless. You know a society is judged on how they take care of the sick and dying. Even on MS, user Magellan responded to this post (over in "male survivor") saying, "want pity?" Sad.

Phoenix,
Try the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan at
www.pcip.gov

It does cost money but if you can find a way to pay for it, you can get better treatment.

I checked on it. No money to pay for it. May not qualify as well. Thank you.

I used to own a small business, not much to open. You can get group insurance (even for just 2 employees) and it will cover your pre-existing.

Please email me, my boat is the same as yours and I am taking care of it now.

I just joined this site for this purpose.

Hey Elaine, you are great human being!
We are being so worried for our brother Phoenix and his health condition. It is big shame that he's been rejected and left aside on his own by health system. It is unbelievable shame.

Hey, Elaine, Thanks you so much for responding. I didn't know about your response till Pero told me today. Sorry I didn't respond. I'm glad you found this idea. I looked at it in December last year. Quite a few people have done it. The problem is I'm just broke, no income period. Florida has extremely high group insurance rates for less than 50 employees. More employees the cheaper it gets. Main reason why most small businesses in Florida don't offer it. And, they are allowed to up the price for pre-existing conditions. Heart issues being the worst. Unofficially, I found rates to be $600-1,000+ a month. They wouldn't quote without a business and knowing who I was. Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Thank you.

In 2006, there was 45,000 that died in America that had no healthcare coverage or no quality care (limited coverage). Republicans moan that the feds will create "death panels" with universal healthcare. It's stupid since we already have them. They are called insurance companies. Watch the documentary "Sicko". You'd be shocked at how many die every year in American that have health insurance because of refusal of treatment, can't afford deductibles/co-pays, etc. Lot of insurance companies have scam policies. It literally amazes me how many doctors there are in America who take a Hippocratic Oath and never planned to honor it. I'd say the majority just treat medicine as a get rich scheme. The Hippocratic Oath never said anything about a "profit" motive. Businessmen (insurance companies) have sold doctors on a bill of goods then they both sold patients down the river for profit at any cost. It's no longer a calling for most just a way to get rich.

Hi Phoenix,

Sorry to be responding so late -- I just found this post.

I do not know if the hospitals in Florida have these, but up here (north east) the hospitals have a "family practice" attached to them. They offer services to those who cannot afford them.

If your local hospitals do not have a family practice, there are usually no/ low cost health clinics. Typically, these clinics are in the areas where there are large populations of people with little resources. Some of the clinics are walk-in and have a 'first come, first served' way of doing things. Other clinics have appointments. They all have doctors from a wide range of specialities.

To find the name/ numbers of the clinics call the teaching hospitals in your area and ask for the name(s) of the clinic(s) with whom they are affiliated.

*If* you do have surgery, be advised that you may have surgical trainees either observing the surgery and/ or doing part of the actual surgery, under the direction of the chief surgeon.

I, too, am in the position of no insurance and major medical issues. I understand your struggles.

*If* you see the doctors you need but cannot afford the pre>

Hey, Anamalous,

Most everything in Florida is about money. I have the drug card. Florida does that so as to "care" about people. Hahaha! Truth is, Walmart's $4 plan did it way better. I use them. They have a free clinic here but the doc I saw damn near killed me. If I hadn't signed the no-sue contract, I would have talked to a lawyer. Not to get rich but to get the care I need. He either didn't care or was incompetent and missed the CHF. I saw him in Nov. and he wanted me to see him in 90 days or more and just was diagnosed with CHF. I really wonder which it was. He also couldn't follow up on stuff so I go to the health department. The guy there had his thyroid removed so he knows it. He's not a doc but way better than the doc. If anything serious, I go to the ER. If they refuse to treat (one does..scum), I will sue. Both are for-profits. My credit sucks anyway so I don't care how much they spend. If I found gold or something, I'd pay 'em back.

One hospital has charity care. But, they are cutting it huge. They just went for-profit. They all have charity care, but, at for-profits, it's for people w/insurance that can't pay. Figure that out. Even the one I've went to that was non-profit last year (ER visits..2), I should've been admitted. Had a BNP test that was like 1500-2000. They are not supposed to let you go until under 600 DUE TO DEATH WORRIES (stroke/heart attack). It was like, we can admit you but if you want to go home, you can, and we know you want to go home. Legally, they violated the law, but that's some bullshit in a book somewhere that ain't enforced. It's called EMTALA. Federal law. I didn't know the law fully when I was there that time, or I would've said, admit me. I could walk in there now and they'd have to admit. 900-1000 BNP levels now.

The free clinics don't like to treat patients with very serious health issues. At least the one I know about. They pretty much said that. The other clinics are Medicaid scams. I don't qualify till I get Disability then won't when I get Medicare after 2 years.

The simple truth about charity care is they like to do it for patients that have insurance gaps or poor women. Google it and you'll find stories. I actually read studies on that and EMTALA. Treatment is not the same either. If I had insurance when I went there in Nov. 2011, I can guarantee you my ass would've been there for weeks. Patient dumping is illegal but goes on all the time. In LA, one hospital was fined for putting sick patients in a cab and dumping them in the bad section of town. They did it to some 80 year old woman. Video is on youtube. Hippocratic Oath is bullshit in USA.

The only reason Florida gives a fuck period is they get tons of federal money for Medicaid and docs get rich ripping off Medicaid. Our Gov. is one that ripped off Medicare and got rich. Look up Rick Scott. Asshole should be in prison.

Surgery is my only option. The radioactive iodine would kill me due to releasing all the hormones stored in my two goiters. If you have goiters, you can also have cancer in them. Until they remove them, the doc is lying if he says no you don't before. It may not show up on a test before unless it spread. If you have goiters, they only treatment is removal. I have at least 2. Even when I had a career and great insurance, I would not want the bill for surgery and recovery. ICU is required after surgery. Since I've waited due to being broke, surgery might not get rid of the CHF. I'm right at the level of cardiomyopathy. That's less than 40% ejection fraction. It means I only have 40% use of my heart. I've lost 33% almost overnight.

Thanks a lot for the information, man. I've thought of everything including a felony. Hahaha The felony would work. haha I ain't doing it though unless I get where pain is unbearable.

Thank you, Daniel! Sorry I missed your reply. America's health care system sucks. Prices are ridiculous. Where I live now are for-profit hospitals. They don't help many after awhile. Of course, docs don't either. If you uninsured, male over 30 and broke, there is little to no help. Women find that too but men just find it way more. All America cares about is money I'm afraid. It's sad we call ourself the greatest and are no better than some 3rd world countries. If I hold out for disability, good. If not, that's fine. Thanks again.

I care.

I am also saddened someone from MS would make an evil post such as "want pity" No, I think just common decency.

I hope you make it through to disability!! or Universal Health Care.

Is there any way to be added to an employed friend's insuranc as an SO?

Or if you could somehow afford it; travel to another country for your much needed surgery.

What about going to a hospital in a state in USA that cannot by law refuse to treat and just get admitted and tough s**t once you're admiited. I think California must treat.

I care and I wish I knew of some way I could help.

Kurt

Kurt,

Thank you so much. Under federal law, called EMTALA, all an ER (that says ER) has to do is treat to stabilize just like you were a paying patient. I'm sure many delay treatment if you're not paying but that's a violation too. Now, if you're pregnant and about to pop out a baby, they'll deliver. If just in labor, they can move you to a non-profit hospital. I knew two women that happened to. It happened to me in Nov. 2011. Not to mention the charge nurse didn't take a possible heart attack seriously at all. Truth is, if the doc thinks you are stabilized, they can tell you to get lost. That happens many times daily all over America. Hospitals routinely patient dump including the ones with big crosses claiming Jesus on top of their buildings. Sacred Heart in Pensacola is one of them. An example - if you walk in with a broken ankle, all they have to do is stabilize. Set it, wrapped it, that's it. If it legitimately needs surgery, they should do it, but plenty of stories out there where they lied to the patient and didn't. Read one last fall about a guy with a back injury that was refused treatment in his ER. I told him to call a lawyer. He's now suing. Good luck to him. Thanks again for the kind words.

Here is a terrible story of EMTALA failure not long ago. Woman died with an ankle injury in a jail cell after the hospital had her arrested for refusing to leave.

I am not a big fan of Obama care because of how it is funned creates unintended consequences by taxing “Cadillac plans”, as a result many companies no longer offer Cadillac plans. In Obama’s defense I will say that it was another politician that put this section in, Obama actually talked negatively about this inauguration….

But

If Obama Care goes though (and it very likely will) they can no longer disqualify based on pre-existing condition.

This part goes into effect this year. It sounds to me like they are setting your expectations incorrectly so you don't apply... Were you will cost them so much money they will try to get you to never apply, since they can't deny you.

In other words you can lie about it, get insurance, and they can’t cancel you…

ObamaCare is far from perfect. We need universal, single payer and to get rid of insurance cos. For-profit is the problem in America. But, Obama has done more than the GOP would ever do except give you a free body bag before you croak. Obama had to kiss the insurance biz to get anything done.

A non-profit hospital here in town just changed to for-profit this year. Before, if uninsured, they treated you like a human 75% of the time (they did lie to me about the seriousness of a 2000 BNP so I'll say 75%). After, they treat you like shit (my experience). No money? Go die cause we don't give a shit. Pretty much how it was. Their "social worker" ( was nasty as could be to me. Blood tests I used to get, not now. I avoided going to the ER (even when I should've) so as not to cost them cash because they'd do my blood tests ($50-150 vs. $8,000 ER visit). Was it rewarded? Nope. Before, they had charity care. Now, only if they feel like it, which is rare. They refuse to even let me apply for it! Before, they had great nurses and PAs in the ER. Now, not kidding, the PAs are still in school doing their practicals. That's cool for some things, but life-threatening things, that's so not cool. The nurses with experience are gone for those right out of school.

If it wasn't for a great PA, I'd still be real sick. He got an endo to take my case for free. Took 6 months, but awesome. The doc (claimed to be an expert at thyroids) at a free clinic claimed I needed surgery. The endo said, "nope. Was he nuts?" I suffered needlessly for a year almost due to incompetence/quackery.

Not well yet, but in a few months, I hope to be.

A guy opens the front door and sees a snail on his doorstep. He picks up the snail and throws it across the street in a neighbor's yard. A year later, the guy opens the front door and the same snail is on his doorstep. The snail says, "What the f*ck was that about?"
