My son has gotten into issuing a "buzz-kill" gift for the birthdays of his friends. They also get a regular gift as well. But the "buzz-kill" gift is usually something that is very serious, studious, boreing etc. Example: an old wooden abacus, or a book on Pre-Raphaelite Poetry.

His birthday is next: So far, all I can come up with is a Justin Beiber singing electric toobrush.

So, I open the floor to ideas:

May we ask his age? That may help in determining.

Turning 13.

I like the 'sextant' idea Ed. The only problem is that he comes from an all-out ocean-going family. My father is beyond expert at selestial navigation. Boo would LOVE this gift.

Puffer: This book appears to be a must-read.

Yer not kidding "you can't use the other word!" These kids grasp onto and exploit every single possible play on words. They're like Beavis and Butthead all over again.

Ha....ha ha ha huh huhh huhha....he said 'sex.'

The complete Master Theater production of "Bleak house" by the bbc on DVD's. Author Charles Dickens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleak_House

It's a snoozer and a great classic of literature. Even the synopsis is a snoozer.

Gentlemen, not to pew pew on your suggestions but we're talking about a 13 year old boy (remember those days?). A 13 year old boy's interests run from girls (passing), money, clothes, music, video games, to DVDs. I HIGHLY recommend getting him a a gift card to the local mall which has all of the above and that way he can spend it anyway he wants. Get him the other stuff if you must but get him the gift card and promise him a day for just the two of you and him tearing up one end of the mall to the other.

My vote is to cater to his consumerism. wink

You should get him a copy of Finnegans Wake. It's the perfect book for any 13-year-old! laugh
