I have the kiddos for the 3-day weekend. My son has discovered "Geo-Caching." For those of you who don't know it, its basically a treasure hunt for a hidden item (anywhere in the world) and you are given the lattitude and longitude of the item. You ususally use a GPS to find it, but there are some hard-core folks who take the trip au-naturale with only a map and compass. The item has a log-book or sheet that you sign and date. Because its a container, you look at the items inside and leave an item if you take an item...or you just leave it as is. It gets you out into the woods with a purpose and a quest destination.

We'll be in the White Mountains this weekend. If the black bears don't eat us and we don't end-up on Fox News as the "lost NH family," I should have a good report next week.

Rob,
Good to hear--it is about time that you get to spend this quality time with your children. You have been through so much lately and it will be good for you "inner child" to get out and play!

Thanks all!

I just went shopping for the bug spray, the sunscreen, the water, the Gatorade, the trail-mix, dry-sock change, back-up batteries for the GPS, und der 20-foot wasp spray for discouraging the Teddy-bears.

Now I just need to secure the medical stand-by staff, the evac chopper, the Native American guides, and the catering service.

Where do you buy a satellite phone?

Don't want to sound a little bit discouraging, but is it a little bit late to look for a satellite phone now? Found one for you, http://www.thuraya.com/home. Hope you can get it in time.

Catering service?

That sounds like a great idea for one of those culinary-themed competition shows like Hell's Kitchen or Iron Chef, except they have to create a gourmet meal from stuff you find in the backwoods. Just don't eat any wild mushrooms

We can always go with Bear meat I guess.

OH...OH...I had to pick the kids up from skool and bring them to my formerly happy home now owned by el Madre so they could get their hiking stuff. They have a really cool dead porcupine out front on the street. When we got there, a live turkey was eating its guts! We resisted poking at with a stick, but its still gonna be a wicked cool weekend!

Have and good time on your adventure! Maybe you can watch Man vs. Wild on YouTube to get some culinary ideas should your food run out.

Day 1 of the 3

Simply ALIVE...I've not seen life in this view, in this light ever before.

Everything after the age of 7.5 was off-kilter in significant, material ways. Everything was seen through filters of life's unfortunate turn of events.

I almost felt fortunate...fortunate to have been chopped into pieces of meat, and forced to "dance" without legs. Fortunate to have seen and walked and swam in the deapths of black-tar hell and to emerge into this world tested, stregnthened and mollified by fire.

Today, and maybe for only today, for a while, I saw it all better than you can, Mr. Normal!

I've not hugged a day since I was a very small child.

Day 2 of 3,

WOW!!!!! Wow! wow! woW!

I have learned so much about the lives of normal boys. My son brought along his good frnd (he has a LOT of 'good friends') to an amusement park trip I made with my two kids. We'll call him "Boy A." Like my son, Boy A is totally open, proud, fearless, BOLD and truly likes himself. Words cannot begin to describe the contrast I saw tween these two 12 year-olds and me at the same age. They did confirm what I always suspected to be true. The safe children, the safe boys lead a life free of the dreadful side-roads I was forced to travel. They enjoy frivolous play, mischievous plots and wild brain-damaged-like ideas of "what could be cool."

Smiles never (n e v e r) left their faces the entire day. We opened the park and closed it down at 10:00pm. On the ride home, they talked about the girls who looked at them, who talked to them and who fell victim to their humorous dialogue.

Boy A's dad is in Iraq and has been for a long time. He seemed to like what the day provided, though I've never seen him without a full smile on his face.

Anyway, MY words will never adequately describe the amazing discoveries I've made this past weekend. Itís interesting though that I never felt one ounce of sadness or remorse about what I might have missed, or "gee, I never had that," or "I wish...I wish."

I DO wish I could descibe the heart-felt discoveries. It was an amazing, huggable day.

You and me too, Robbie. I've suspected it to be true also. I have some grand children who aren't 12 yet. Maybe I'll get to see it also.

Hi, my fraternal brothers,

Robbie, WOW, am I happy for you. You certainly deserve it.

You & Allen have said it all. As I have seen it. I have experienced it in the presence of my 2 grandsons.

I credit the following to you both.

The safe children. The safe boys, live a life free of the dreadful side roads, that we here were forced to take.

Thanks for posting this Robbie, heal well.

So happy to hear about the great time you and the kids had together! That's how I felt about the true spirit of your struggles and passionate help for others in need - the part of you that has survived was reborn in your children. YOU've made it to happen that your kids enjoy a safe, healthy, and happy life while some of the "normal" people have failed their children so badly.

The little Robbie is fully alive in your son. Hope your new discovery will help you to find the true meaning of life. You don't need a mask to MAKE people like you. Your true friends are those who respect and admire and share what you value and what you do. The hypocrites? They can never understand nor care and are really irrelevant. Your disclosure has cost you SO much, but isn't it great that you can enjoy this wonderfully amazing weekend as your true self!

Look forward to more days like this in your future!

KT

We had to give up on Geo-Caching in the White Mountains as the insects were so dense that they would likely drain the kids of all their blood within minutes (they don't like the way I taste so they leave me alone).

We went to the beach on day 3.

It was a great day. My son brought his friend (Girl M) along with us. While the kids were in the water (ice water), I watched with the hyper-diligence that I have always used. For some reason, while watching girl M go a bit too far out for my liking, I envisioned grabbing a Lifeguard and telling him that "a 12 yo girl was in trouble and to follow me."

Then I told myself "but girl M is 13, not 12...but I feel I need to say a 12yo is in trouble." For the full afternoon I felt this girl was going to have issues in the ocean and I would need to get a lifeguard, fast and tell him she is 12. The feeling was heavy and sinking...and I've had it many times before. (if you don't know me, I claim to be very clairvoyant and have many examples of proof).

I knew something was bad and that I had to be very on-guard. We eventually left the sand and ocean and spent lots of Dad's money in the arcades and junk-food joints. As we were leaving, heading for the car...we saw the responders rushing and heard the sirens. A girl, who was grabbed by a rip-current, will forever be 12.

OMG, your survivor's sixth sense has saved Girl M. Can't imagine it was her that got swept away under your watch. Truly sad for the other 12 yo...WHERE were the people watching her???

Hampton Beachis very crowded. I also find that no matter what the population on any given day, no one looks out for others in the water. I'm bringing my binoculars and a whhistle from now on. Kids die on that beach every single freaking year and they are surrounded by about a million other beach-goers when they do.

This is also the same town as where Camden Hughes Pierce was murdered earlier in May.

Also, I don't think I saved girl M at all. I was just very much on guard from as result of my "feelings."

Howdy, Robbie.

Having grown up in Boston way back then 39-54, i was at that beach one time. That girl that you had mentioned her brother (who tried to save her) was on the Today show. Real sad.

Me and my boyhood friends used to swim in the East Boston side of the harbor. How I/we ever survived swimming in that polluted water is known only by God.

The only salt water that my son ever swam in was off of Okinawa. My daughter-in-law & 2 grandsons went swimming in the Gulf, off of Corpus Christi, TX last summer. Other than that they swim in lifeguard swimming pools with their parents.

Sure glad that you got to enjoy your children, I am happy for you.

Take care, my fraternal brother, Robbie, heal well.

My father grew up on the water in E. Boston and my mother in Winthrop, also on the water. You may have run into them.

Hi, my brothers,

I forgot to add that we always were naked when we swam in the harbor. Maybe our paths have crossed way back then.

It was part of an abandoned wharf. But there was an elderly lady in the projects who used to watch us naked boys on the wharf. Sometimes we had seen her and we faced her and umm ahh ohh shaked our umm ahh penises at her.

Maybe that's just way too much of information overload. Just a fond memory for me.

Heal well, my brothers, heal well.

Considering my father started building boats at about age 10 and my mother would bring her daily catch of perry-winkles to the movies with her, I'd say my role with the ocean was pretty well etched. All paternal grandfathers as far as we can see were Atlantic sailors from boyhood-on.

Its very strange. I fear the ocean but am compelled to sail against her. One mariner once said that "true sailors learn to hate and/or fear the sea, or they don't have that much experience with it."
