Just my two cents.
I am pissed off at what Mr. Donahue said. Blaming the victims and sweeping their pain under the rug isn't holy and the church as a whole needs to do a lot of prayer and soul searching about what it needs to do to prevent sexual abuse from happening in churches, and extend its arm out to survivors in an effort to address wounds which will take generations to heal.
However, Donahue isn't the Catholic Church. He is just one Catholic layman with a big mouth, a fax machine, and an uncanny ability to write overly simplistic press releases that do nothing for the Church (and i am not just talking about the scandals, he runs his mouth off on a lot of other issues too). The Church is bigger than this press release.
my assailant attacked my faith and tried to take it away from me. i went to confession, told the priest what happened, and he said it wasn't a sin, it was sexual assault. he referred me to a therapist. That was the first time i ever opened up about my sexual assault. if it wasn't for the words of that priest, I probably would not be in recovery today. who knows where i would be...
