I really enjoy this topic and thought I would post some songs for those of us who are survivors. Please note that over the course of time some of the links may be broken, and I try to check them every few months.

Song 1 (Livin in a world they didn't make-Janet Jackson)-Good song for kids who lose their innocense at such a young age

Here are some other thought provoking songs to share.

Song 1: "Storms" (Fleetwood Mac)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3ALI_8i45g

Song 2: "Father and his son"

NOTE-This can take on many meanings...for me it would be a desire to open up with my own father about what I experienced as a child. He does not know what happened. You can also take this in the religion context of father. For those who had troublesome fathers, this may not be a good song to listen to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wte8dY_9uo0

alternate link that is pretty touching/emotional
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjeYkrSVe8E&feature=related

Song 3: "Love Song"-Tesla

A great song that provides hope for those struggling to find love in relationships. Great instrumental intro before song begins.

Hey, not sure if anyone out there is really listening, but just wanted to post some other songs that are quite meaningful to me as I try to heal, and hopefully some of you will find it meaningful too.

Song 1: Tennessee Line (Daughtry)-Talks about how our troubles seem to follow us wherever we go. Lyrics below video screen if you click on twistie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFT_skC2Hq4&playnext=1&list=PL4D80A9117D1BA3DC

Song 2: My Immortal (Evanescence)-Some lyrics here really are powerful...including "Your presence still lingers here...and it won't leave me alone."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGKRXhmFQlw

Song 3: Better Days (Janet Jackson)-Another song I listen to if I'm ever feeling down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak2iOURreP0

Song 4: No More Drama (Mary J Blige)-Version with lyrics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ9pdGOsqD0

Live version (unbelievable live performance at the grammys)

jj78,

I also like My Immortal - it is an amazing vocal performance that drives home the haunting lyrics.

I think No More Drama is a true anthem song that could be sung by anyone trying to break out of a life style that no longer fits or the influence of others. In fact it would also fit as what I would call a strong boundary statement.

Thanks Daryl! It's amazing as I listen to so many songs nowadays you can really modify the original intent and apply it to those of us who are survivors.

Hey, thanks teebone...I enjoy up tempo songs as well. Here are a couple more songs that I've been listending to lately.

Song 1 (Unforgiven-Metallica)-This has probably been posted before. "Through constant pain disgraced, a young boy learns their rules"..."Deprived of all his thoughts, the young man struggles on and on"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7oeGl705Lo

Song 2 (Angel-Sarah McLachlan)-While this song was written for a lost love one, if you follow the lyrics, it certainly applies to those of us struggling as survivors, especially for those who have kept in hidden within).

"The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies"..."It's easier to believe in this madness, this glorious sadness, that brings me to my knees"

Another song for those of us still struggling with our past.

The World I Know-Collective Soul

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl0J0K-Tjlc

I love the chorus:
"So I walk up on high
And I stop to the edge
To see my world below
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down
Cause it's the world I have known"

...Some are lean, some with grace and some without/tell the story that repeats/of a child who had been left alone at birth/left to fend and taught to fight.

Couldn't have survived without Suzanne Vega.

Here is one I discovered recently, though it is not new. The lyrics in particular describe well my feelings and point of view as I struggle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOPN24hyspU

'It Don't Matter'
Rehab

Sittin in traffic another day of feeling nothing
Trying to find something I guess it's back to huffin'
Paint and model glue oh how I die when I look
At you smilin' lovin' life and all I know is blue
Rainy days and cold stares broken love affairs
Everything's beautiful as long as I ain't there
I guess I wasn't meant to crack a smile who cares
I think I'll go to sleep for a while now

I'm barely livin' in my skin depression's my only friend
And I don't know where I am heading tryin' to forget where I've been
And I'm so sick of lying God please show me that silver lining
Cuz I've heard tale and I'm not well my heads full of hell and
This world's a jail but

And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear
And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear

And as the apin begins to displace had it to ear level
With this place you see it on my face a state of suspended grace
Gradually I erase and find comfort in the sickest womb
I might be present but not in the room
To whom it may consume melting ensembles bleeding chellos running through Bordellos drama
Like Othello hidin' out from Poncharello
Dead off in the Median
Fallin apart like usual handin' out flyers to my funeral

So they say that life's a play and that all the world's a stage
Then for another part I pray the show ends the same way everyday
And my heart carries the pain of a brain I can't explain
Am I insane
Am I insane

And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear
And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear

And everything good is gone
And everything good is gone
And everything good is gone
And everything bad is here
And everything bad is here
And everything bad is here
It doesn't really matter now does it

And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear
And it don't matter and I don't care
I let my pain into the air
Cuz everything good's over there
And everything here's hard to bear

In 1969 (yeah, I'm old) the Youngbloods released "Get Together", but if you bought the 45 (single), the song was backed with "Darkness, Darkness"
Darkness, darkness be my pillow
Take my hand and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow in the silence of your deed
Darkness darkness be my blanket
Take my hand and let me sleep
Take away take away the pain that won't go away
Cover me in your night

Here is another one. "I Can Change" by LCD Soundsystem.

Tell me a line make it easy for me
Open your arms
Dance with me until I feel all right
It's good in the dark, good in the dark
But into the lover's light
Here comes another fight

So ring the alarm, ring the alarm
Bar me and hold me and cling to my arm
Here it comes, here it comes

And what you're asking me now, disastrous now
Hoping and hoping and hoping
The feeling goes away

Never change, never change, never change, never change
Never change, never change, never change
This is why I fell in love oooh

Never change, never change, never change, never change
Never change, never change, never change
That's just too up there in love with
(in loveeeee ...)

This is the time the very best time
So give me a line and take me hoooome
Take me oveeeer

But dashing the hopes dashing the hopes
And smashing the pride
The morning's got you on the ropes .. ooh

And love is a murderer , love is a murderer
But if she calls you tonight
Everything is all right
Yeah, we knoooooow
And love is a curse shoved in a hearse
Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry
And this is coming from me

But I can change, I can change, I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change, I can change
If it helps you fall in love
(fall in looove)

Turn on the light make it easy for me
Fill the divide fumble in the kitchen
til it's right
What an awful sight

But there's love in your eyes
Love in your eyes , love in your eyes
But maybe that's just what your lover finds
All niiiiiight!

But I can change, I can change, I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change, I can change
If it helps you fall in love

Weighty Ghost
Wintersleep

I got out of bed today, Swear to God I couldn't see my face
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost
Who forgot to float away, didn't have all that much to say
Wouldn't even tell me his own name
Where'd my body go

Where oh where'd my body go?
Africa or Mexico?
Where or where'd my body go?
Where'd my body go?

Have you seen my ghost?
Staring at the ground?
Have you seen my ghost?
Sick of those goddamn clouds

Are you some kind of medicine man?
Cut the demons out of my head
You can't kill something that's already dead
Just leave my soul alone
I don't need no surgery
Take those knives away from me
Just wanna die in my own body
A ghost just needs a home

Have you seen my ghost?
Staring at the ground?
Have you seen my ghost?
Sick of those goddamn clouds

Heather Nova had a cd out a few years ago. Bit of a one hit wonder maybe. I don't do youtube (my internet is very limited) or I would look her up. One of the songs would def. trigger but others offered some cool, hopeful melodies.

Here is one song that is ringing in my head these days:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0deFJmhN--A

Shadowland - Lostboy!AKA Jim Kerr

Out in the back woods, out from the main,
Once you've been there is no turning back again.
Wrapped up in silver, dressed up in gold,
Now is the time that your story can be told.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, give me words I should know.

Some play the wild card, some play the game,
Once you've surrendered there's no turning back again.

Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, give me words I should know.

Turn to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, tell me words I should know.

Don't send it all away, such a special day.
On your special day.

Come to me walk out of the shadows,
Whisper to me, tell me words I should know.

Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Sing to me, tell me words I should know.
Come to me walk out of the shadow.
Whipser to me, tell me words I should know.

Sing to me tell me words I should know.
On your special day,
Such a special day.

Hi jj78,
for me music has healing power and without it life would be miserable. One more song came to my mind and I wish to share it with my fellows survivors:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trda5nHIZLo

Fix You - Coldplay
When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down on your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down on your face
And I...

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down on your face
And I...

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Heather Nova songs:

Heal

This one is one of the best, but the quality is kinda poor.

Blue Black

2nd one is a little darker and can trigger but is positive over all.

A Way to Live

Name says it all.

It's all good so long as it makes me feel better. I've never really thought of any music I listen to as being particularly good for survivors, but after thinking about it some I realized that John and Julian Lennon's first albums both seem to speak to me for some reason.

I've noticed that besides songs with depressing lyrics, listening to bootlegs also seem to make me feel better when I'm upset. I have 3 in my collection so far. A 1975 John Lennon record called The John Lennon Telecasts, a 1989 or 1990 Paul McCartney record called And All The Rest, and another that I'll mention in a moment since it's on the turntable right now. I like how much more real they are than official studio releases. You can feel the raw energy and the artists emotions so much better when listening to incomplete or complete but unpolished versions of a song you like, and hearing them talk or argue about a song between takes is cool. Right now I'm listening to a 1969 Beatle bootleg called In A Play Anyway. Let It Be and Abbey Road were still works in progress. It beats the hell out of volume 3 of the Beatles Anthology. If any Beatle fans here ever come across this record don't hesitate to buy it.

Sometimes just some plain instrumental music with no lyrics can feel good. I have a few instrumental albums. I have one from 1970 or 71 called Switched On Bach. It's nothing special, just the music played on a melatron or a synthecisor. I have a Ravi Shankar record that I can't remember the name of right now. I have three instrumental albums of Beatles music. Volume 1 and 3 of the Hollyridge Strings albums and Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles. So far I've enjoyed all of them.

I'm listening to the Wilburys right now. I just felt like commenting on how good the last track on side one feels. Not Alone Anymore. I believe it's the last song Roy Orbison wrote before he died. I don't really know what to say beyond the fact that it just feels good. Now that I think about it, the end of side 2 feels almost as good. End of the Line. I don't know which of them wrote it but it's a good end for the album.

I like the song from MGMT " kids" .
The video could use a switch. Scared the poor little guy.
Often when i am driving in my car ...i will change the lyrics
to what fits me. Shouting out famliy names, what i would like
to do to them! What i like ,, what i dont! It helps , i find
it takes the edge off!
Last night a friend and i went to a bar and to sing karoake.
I sang " Wonderful" by Everclear. It is joyous tune for little
boys.
Yeah, it was nice to sing this - put a smile both inside and out:)

A friend of mine, John Cowan, a survivor, was given the lyrics to this song in about 20 minutes. It is gut wrenching and heart wrenching and healing and is his story. It is called "Drown" and he courageously put it on his "New Tattoo" CD and available as a download on Amazon:

“Drown” lyrics by John Cowan, music by Darrell Scott

Under the big top the lights go dim
The clowns all hide and the ringmaster grins
His belt was noosed around my wrist
His smile turned in to an angry twist.

Too young to know better just what was wrong.
My insides turned where they didn’t belong
And all I could do was hold back the tears
And wait for his thirst to go back to his beer.

And so another and another and another was made
To slug through this life so alone and afraid.

So I lied and I stole and I ate all I could
Just to have some control---as if I would.
And there I was awful and fat
He said if I told I’d die for that.

Tell me when do the lights leave the gleam in the eyes
Of children molested by men twice their size
Is it the moment of entry, the rush of surprise
Or knowing their lives will only be lies.

I knew there’d be solace as there always will be
For the pit of a soul that’s forever hungry.
A needle a bottle a warm piece of flesh
A return to the thing that always felt best.

And if God is a spirit tell me where does he go
Is he busy with devils confessing their woes?

I guess it’s up to us to find one another
And try and touch souls and try to recover
The lives we’re making all over again
In hope that some child will never again
Drown….drown….drown

Hey Sgt Pepper and Bumblebee-I really enjoyed your posts. Music and lyrics can be very touching.

I actually recently came across a song that is extremely moving. It's about dealing with our difficulties and learning that some things are out of our control.

"What I cannot change" by LeAnn Rimes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvOyi6mYIWs

And here is a great live vocal of this song:

Don't Let It Bring You Down -- Paul McCartney & Wings

Though some things in life are hard to bear
Don't let it bring you down

Should the sand of time run out on you
Don't let it bring you down

Don't go down - don't go underground
Things seem strange, but they change
How they change

Up and down your carousel will go
Don't let it bring you down

Don't go down - don't get out of town
Get to know how it goes, how it goes

When the price you have to pay is high
Don't let it bring you down.

Now that I think about it, anything that you like playing loud can be good for you. Yesterday I bought a 3 disc set called The Jimi Hendrix Experience BBC Sessions. It came from 2nd and Charles, the best big chain store that you can get new and used materials from. It cost $30. It has a Beatles Anthology feel to it.

As the weight of the holiday season lifts I find myself thinking of "Weight of the World". It's the first song on Ringo Starr's 1993 album Time Takes Time. It's a good start for the album.

Sorry guys it's been so long since I've been on. I've listened to all the recent posts and really find them inspiring and deep.

Here's a song I've always found to resonate for many victims including CSA survivors. Because of what happened to us, we sometimes veer off in the wrong direction and need to right the ship.

"Fastcar" by Tracy Chapman

here are some of the lyrics *WARNING* (it may trigger some) i listen to this almost everyday n i can't believe how painfully true this is (least for me)

KORN
"Narcissistic Cannibal"
(feat. Skrillex & Kill The Noise)

Don't wanna be sly and defile you
Desecrate my mind and rely on you
I just wanna break this crown
But it's hard when I'm so run down

And you're so cynical, Narcissistic Cannibal!
Got to bring myself back from the dead!

Sometimes, I hate, the life, I made
Everything's wrong every time
Pushing on I can't escape
Everything that comes my way
Is haunting me taking its sweet time

Holding on I'm lost in a haze
Fighting life to the end of my days

Don't wanna be rude but I have to
Nothing's good about the hell you put me through
I just need to look around
See that life that has come unbound

And you're so cynical, Narcissistic Cannibal
Got to bring myself back from the dead

Sometimes, I hate, the life I made
Everything's wrong every time
Pushing on I can't escape
Everything that comes my way
Is haunting me taking its sweet time

Sometimes, I hate, the life I made
Everything's wrong every time
Pushing on I can't escape
Everything that comes my way
Is haunting me taking its sweet time

Holding on I'm lost in a haze
Fighting life to the end of my days

Holding on I'm lost in a haze
Fighting life to the end of my days

"Kill Mercy Within"

Disgraced
Expendable, we are not really real
A mirage of solitude is what they try to heal and
I will not be made to feel we are sealed in a fake charade

Spewing vile atrocities
Bringing existence to its knees
I will manifest my sins and
I will Kill Mercy Within
Immersed in this hypnotic spell
Influenced by the hate that swells
I'm not terrified anymore
There's nothing left but open sores

Disengaged
Relinquish the reality, I've known
I'm feeling like I'm alienated from my own and
I will not be made to feel we are sealed in a fake charade

Spewing vile atrocities
Bringing existence to its knees
I will manifest my sins and
I will Kill Mercy Within
Immersed in this hypnotic spell
Influenced by the hate that swells
I'm not terrified anymore
There's nothing left but open sores

Spewing vile atrocities
Bringing existence to its knees
I will manifest my sins and
I will Kill Mercy Within
Immersed in this hypnotic spell
Influenced by the hate that swells
I'm not terrified anymore
There's nothing left but open sores

Nothing left but open sores

"My Wall"

And along came something sacred
I never knew what I found
The demons dance around, elated
They're hurting me

I put my wall up each day
You tear it down
I hide in my space
The space you found
And one of these days
I'll come unbound
The feelings I hate
Will finally drown

Falling awake in a nightmare
Images of horror abound
Thought I stumbled upon salvation
Hell I found

I put my wall up each day
You tear it down
I hide in my space
The space you found
And one of these days
I'll come unbound
The feelings I hate
Will finally drown

Well, I'll never be the same
It's the greatest lie ever told
No, I'll never be the same
I sold my soul

I put my wall up each day
You tear it down
I hide in my space
The space you found
And one of these days
I'll come unbound
The feelings I hate
Will finally drown

"Bleeding Out"

I'm staring at a face
I don't recognize
Rotten and replaced
Lifeless and benign
You can never say
That I didn't try
I can not erase
What's in my mind

I'm the one to give to you
I'm the one to break you thru
Anything you ever do will
Eat you up and impale you

I'm Bleeding Out
Been crucified by trusting you
Hate turns to shame
By praising you, adoring fool
I'm the one that set you free
Bound to burn for eternity 'cause
I'm Bleeding Out
You're never there when I need you

My thoughts they interlace
Been spun out for sometime
I wander in this maze
An act that is sublime
You can never say
That I didn't try
I cannot erase
What's in my mind

I'm the one to give to you
I'm the one to break you thru
Anything you ever do will
Eat you up and impale you

I'm Bleeding Out
Been crucified by trusting you
Hate turns to shame
By praising you, adoring fool
I'm the one that set you free
Bound to burn for eternity 'cause
I'm Bleeding Out
You're never there when I need you

I'm Bleeding Out
Been crucified by trusting you
Hate turns to shame
By praising you, adoring fool
I'm the one that set you free
Bound to burn for eternity 'cause
I'm Bleeding Out
You're never there when I need you

"Illuminati"

I can't believe what's happening
Where is your self control
Why can't you just be honest
The corruption takes its toll

You rape our hope
Too proud to cope
You built this house of shame
You smile, you gloat
This disease you promote
An infection is what we are now

I can't believe this happened
The fear starts to grab hold
Then anger starts to take over
I will not be controlled

You rape our hope
Too proud to cope
You built this house of shame
You smile, you gloat
This disease you promote
An infection is what we are now

They're taking over now
Eating up our souls somehow
Taking over now
Parasites, they run around
The culprits won't be found
They lie behind this mask of wealth
They're taking over now
Illuminati they hide

You rape our hope
Too proud to cope
You built this house of shame
You smile, you gloat
This disease you promote
An infection is what we are now

You rape our hope
Too proud to cope
You built this house of shame
You smile, you gloat
This disease you promote
An infection is what we are now

I've been listening to Ocean's Kingdom just about every day this week. It's the first of Paul McCartney's instrumental albums I've heard. I plan on finding the other two now.

"Hear Me Now"

[JDOG]
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I wear my crown of thorns and pull the knife out my chest.
I keep searching for something that I never seem to find.
But maybe I won’t, because I left it all behind.
Now I’m stuck with this, and that’ll never change
Always a part of me, until the very last day.

Where to go from here? What road to travel on?
I spent my whole life choosing, and I always chose wrong.
Will I try to have the will to be alive?
Will I try because I’ve never seen the light?
Blow it to the ground and it’s now you see,
You spent your whole life taking the best of me
[DANNY]
Where’d you go? Where’s your home?
How’d you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There’s no light, there’s no sound.
Hard to breathe, when you’re underground.
Can you hear me now? Hear me now
[JOHNNY 3 TEARS]
How long can I keep pretending to be?
That all the stars in the sky could mean something to me.
Heaven will open up if I live on my knees.
A man of many words, but a man of few deeds.
Walking these streets, so absent of hope.

A pillow of concrete, a man with no home.
Lend him a hand, then we’re walking the way.
Leave the virtue of pity, but we live with the shame.
So scared to dream in a world with no sunlight.
When you wake up, you know it’s darker than last night.
Quickly we forget, sacrifice gone by.
Born to walk away, been walking my whole life.
[DANNY]
Where’d you go? Where’s your home?
How’d you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There’s no light, there’s no sound.
Hard to breathe, when you’re underground.
Can you hear me now? Hear me now
[DANNY]
Look into my eyes and I see
What do I see? Nothing at all
Take another look around me
What do I see? Nothing at all
[DANNY]
Where’d you go? Where’s your home?
How’d you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There’s no light, there’s no sound.
Hard to breathe, when you’re underground.
Can you hear me now? Hear me now
[DANNY]
Can you hear me? Hear me now

Give the songs a chance they might not be what you are expecting from me they all of meaning in them and things we all can relate to trust me . Let me no what you think and how they might effect your life . This is a great thread by the way

This is a very powerful song to listen to when you feel like giving up hold on for one more day
Don't give up

This song is about taking this life and asking to be made whole again
very deep
Take this life

This song song is about your family tree that you do not have to except what was handed to you by your families guidance or should i say lack of guiding leading and parenting great song you do not have to live the life that was handed down to you Family Tree

This song is about rising from the ashes it is possible to overcome
i will rise

Broken by Lifehouse
I do not know if this was posted but this song will touch all of us in a special way it will bring you to tears it is very deep and it describes all of us in a special way
Broken

This song is about all the times we feel apart feel lonely and even apart from God
Times

This song is more of a rap but it talks about our struggle and the real video shows sexual abuse specifically and the lyrics mention it also this could be triggering but it is a really strong song and speaks to our struggle Fly away

This song came from a rapper it was the first person to mention being molested in his lyrics his name is Bizzy Bone and he was kidnapped molested and than was rescued from the show Americas most wanted and than bounced from foster home to foster home . I could relate to him so much i lived the same life he did selling drugs and living that life .

the lyrics go " but i keep my skeletons understand me what if i said i was molested would you look at me pale but i keep on baleen and i hope i don't go to hell stressed out o well"
Nobody can Stop me

Demons surround me all the time
This is a fast paced song but i included the vid with lyrics give it a chance it is hard to understand but when you get the lyrics it is an awesome song when he says
Get away for safety, in a coma like state, invade me/ Everyone say: "Hey, hey, he's crazy"/ Premonitions, kick pushin' daisies/ Wait, they chase to slay me/ Paranoid, mortal to the paranormal, jumpin' out portals/ Kinetical energy formal
Man it is a really schizophrenic song that i can relate to
Demons surround me

don't see this one listed yet - it is religious in nature, but the words touch that empty spot in me that so needs compassion:

"Robot Boy" by LP

You say you're not gonna fight
'Cause no one would fight for you
And you think there's not enough love
And no one to give it to
And you're sure you've hurt for so long
You've got nothing left to lose
So you say you're not gonna fight
'Cause no one would fight for you

You say the weight of the world
Has kept you from letting go
And you think compassion's a flaw
And you'll never let it show
And you're sure you hurt in a way
That no one will ever know
But someday the weight of the world
Will give you the strength to go

Hold on, the weight of the world
Will give you the strength to go
So hold on, the weight of the world
Will give you the strength to go
So hold on, the weight of the world
Will give you the strength to go
Just hold on, the weight of the world
Will give you the strength to go

"Iridescent" - LP again

You were standing in the wake of devastation
And you were waiting on the edge of the unknown
And with the cataclysm raining down
Insides crying "Save me now"
You were there, impossibly alone

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go. Let it go

And in a burst of light that blinded every angel
As if the sky had blown the heavens into stars
You felt the gravity of tempered grace
Falling into empty space
No one there to catch you in their arms

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go. Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go. Let it go

Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go. Let it go

Hey Guys-Thanks all for posting your songs. I really enjoyed some of them and agree with what NLT stated about the impact music has on our healing process.

This song was very special to me when I first heard it when I was 11 or so in 1984. This song spoke to me. In my mind I pictured Morrissey speaking to me and being my "protector." During many dark nights throughout my life, this song got me through. Listening to it still, it brings a lump to my throat.

Here's the original version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcFHPl0NbwM

Here's a heart-wrenching beautiful cover by Sinead O'Connor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKVuSjSGUKk

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
Please don't cry
For the ghost and the storm outside
Will not invade this sacred shrine
Nor infiltrate your mind
My life down I shall lie
If the bogey-man should try
To play tricks on your sacred mind
To tease, torment, and tantalise
Wavering shadows loom
A piano plays in an empty room
There'll be blood on the cleaver tonight
And when darknesss lifts and the room is bright
I'll still be by your side
For you are all that matters
And I'll love you to till the day I die
There never need be longing in your eyes
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
Ceiling shadows shimmy by
And when the wardrobe towers like a beast of prey
There's sadness in your beautiful eyes
Oh, your untouched, unsoiled, wonderous eyes
My life down I shall lie
Should restless spirits try
To play tricks on your sacred mind
I once had a child, and it saved my life
And I never even asked his name
I just looked into his wondrous eyes
And said : "never never never again"
And all too soon I did return
Just like a moth to a flame
So rattle my bones all over the stones
I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns
Oh, see how words as old as sin
Fit me like a glove
I'm here and here I'll stay
Together we lie, together we pray
There never need be longing in your eyes
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
Mine
Climb up on my knee, sonny boy
Although you're only three, sonny boy
You're - you're mine
And your mother she just never knew
Oh, your mother ...
As long ... as long ... as long
I did my best for her
I did my best for her
As long ... as long ... as long as ... as long
I did my best for her
I did my best for her

Hey fellas...been a while since I posted here. Just reposting a song that has special meaning to me on this Saturday night. At a reflection point with a friendship and realized it can't be what I would like it to be.

Here's another song that I thought you guys would enjoy. I've had one of the hardest week's of my lives, and this song has very relevant lyrics. This song came from her "Velvet Rope" albums which is by far her best album, and one of the great pop albums. It includes many serious songs about serious issues, and was written as she was going through bouts with depression and anxiety in her early 30s reflecting on her past.

"It catches up to us fast...we have to deal with the past...I know it's painful"

Here are a couple of really powerful songs for those who may be Christian on here.

1. "Jesus take the wheel"-Carrie Underwood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qujwcCUH88o
NOTE-Written from a female perspective, but the core message really applies to us male survivors as well.

2. "How Great thou Art"-Easily the best live Country live vocal, and one of the best awards show performances I've seen.

Two other great live performances at awards shows.

I'm not a survivor- but this song makes my heart ache for my survivor because I can feel his pain at times.

The YouTube video won't load on a phone- so if you want to check it out you have to go on the computer.

Here's a song with a lot of meaning for survivors who may struggle with emotion or love. It's a very poetic song that may help as the weather turns cold and winter approaches.

Red Hot Chili Peppers "Under The Bridge"

Sometimes I feel
Like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of Angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
'Cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills
'Cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and
She kisses me windy and
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all that way (yeah yeah yeah)

It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way (yeah yeah yeah)
Ooh no (no no yeah yeah)
Love me I say yeah yeah

Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge "
I could not get enough
Under the bridge "
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge "
I gave my life away (yeah yeah yeah)
Ooh no (no no yeah yeah)
Here I stay yeah yeah

Here I stay...

When I am coming out of a low, I generally find myself listening to Henry Rollins. Something about his music, poetry, etc that resonates with me and makes me stronger. In a way, it helps me to focus my anger into something more positive to keep me going.

Anyway, was listening to this today and though I would share.

Rollins Band - "Alien Blueprint"

You reached out
You got burned
Made tough by the lessons you learned
You never thought they could be so mean
Be so hard and cause you so much pain
Like a fool
You tired again
You really wanted to be their friend
But looking back you see they just wasted your time
Self loathing
The anger inside
You covered it up with pride
You always found a way to blame it on yourself

So mad
So mean
The pain remained unseen
All that time spent up wanting to explode
What they did
The things they said
You wished that you were dead
Anything not to deal with them
They made you hate
You couldn't wait
To go out and do something great
Turn around and throw it right back in their face

Looking back you get yourself together
Looking back you see the hatred inside
Now you see that you get to change your mind about yourself
And get to go on, so go on
Looking back you see you just wasted your time
Looking back you can see all you've got is yourself
You can tell by the look in their eyes

Now you see
How you are
The wisdom mixed in with all the scars
Watching all the fools
They never knew
They never do
It was always up to you
You gotta get it for yourself
You never were
One of them
They could have never been our friends
The best revenge is to always survive yourself

great song jj78!

i had no idea that JJ had so much depth.

this song is sorta sad, too.
it almost sounds like a disclosure, but it could be about anything. the words are vague enough. i hear there was abuse in the jackson family, and then there's the whole MJ scandal/conspiracy/controversy.

way back in june 2001, janet jackson rented our local hockey arena for a month to rehearse for a tour. i was lucky enough to get some of that work. i only remember big funky dance productions. thanks for showing me a different side of her.

one of my work buddies got fired just for talking to her while she rested between tunes. he said it was worth it, but he never worked in that building again.

here is some more jackson family survivor music for you.

Waiting for Superman - The Flaming Lips

http://youtu.be/NSM948V4wg8

Asked you a question
I didn't need you to reply
Is it gettin' heavy?
But they'll realize
Is it gettin' heavy?
Well I thought it was already as heavy
As can be

Is it overwhelming
To use a crane to crush a fly?
It's a good time for Superman
To lift the sun into the sky

'Cause it's gettin' heavy
Well I thought it was already as heavy
As can be

Tell everybody
Waitin' for Superman
That they should try to hold on
Best they can
He hasn't dropped them
Forgot them
Or anything
It's just too heavy for Superman to lift

Is it gettin' heavy?
Well I thought it was already as heavy as can be.

Tell everybody
Waitin' for Superman
That they should try to hold on
Best they can
He hasn't dropped them
Forgot them
Or anything
It's just too heavy for Superman to lift

I first heard this song in high school, when I was often sad for no reason I could find.

Of course, now I know why I was sad, and now when I hear it the song lets me feel that sadness again but with the distance of nostalgia.

I walked the empty streets of my suburb when I was a little kid, at night after everyone had gone to bed. Doing this kept me alone, and safe from my father.

When I left for the city in my later teens, I still walked around alone at night. Hustling, and searching for any intimacy that I could find. My father had killed any normal idea of human love for me, and in my constant alone-ness, I became lonely.

This song talks about the feelings I had.

So I have quite a few, but I will start with this:
I'm a closet Jann Arden freak btw...go Canada!

For the times where I felt like i was being judged...
Jann Arden - Where No One knows me

Now this is the song, that always hits home with me...I tear up everytime i hear it...I feel she wrote for me...It has got me through some pretty rough times...
Jann Arden - Hanging by a thread
When I cry, I close my eyes
And every tear falls down inside
And I pray with all my might
That I will find my heart in someone's arms
When I cry, cry
When I cry, when I am sad
I think of every awful thing I ever did
When I cry, there is no love
No, there is nothing that can comfort me enough
When I cry
Cry, cry
(chorus)
The salt inside my body ruins
Everyone I come close to
My hands are barely holding up my head
Oh, I'm so tired of looking at my feet
And all the secrets that I keep
My heart is barely hangin' by a thread
Hangin' by a thread
Oh, look at me
At all I've done
I've lost so many things that I so dearly love
I lost my soul
I lost my pride
Oh, I lost any hope of having a good life
So I cry
Cry, cry
(chorus)
I miss you all
I wish I was
With you now
I wish I was

Coldplay - Fix you was already posted here, great song...

Hey guys-I found this really cool new song that is out. It's called "Wake me up," and it has a very uplifting feel to it. I hope you like it.

I've listened to this song a lot recently. It's probably about love (as usual) but I think it's pretty good and sort of inspirational. I just saw the official video which totally doesn't seem to match up with the lyrics, so this is just a boring video of the lyrics.

I also really like these guys called Twenty One Pilots. They have a lot of songs about depression, but they're not depressing. They're a lot different to anything I ever heard. I forgot what the album is called but I love everything on it, which is kind of unusual.

I forgot to add this. It was pretty much my anthem a couple of years ago. It's called Natives by blink-182. A lot of my friends were really affected by it too. Couldn't find a proper video for it. (if you ever listened to Angels and Airwaves then the intro sounds really like the intro for Young London)

Had a look and didn't see this in the series of posts, so my contribution.
After only a few months into therapy, I was feeling empowered I guess, good and pretty positive.
I was spending some time going through my old records, and came across "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney. I love the song but never really paid attention to the lyrics. I knew them but they held no meaning for me.
I decided this was a good choice to update my digital collection and went to iTunes and downloaded it.
My wife came home from work and I played it for her, as she came in the door.
She hugged me tight and asked if I was trying to tell her something.
I stopped and listened to the chorus...

"Baby Im a man and maybe Im a lonely man
Whos in the middle of something
That he dosent really understand
Babe Im a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby wont you help to me understand"

I was suddenly stopped in my tracks, dumbfounded.
I became very emotional and needed a moment to collect myself.
She held me tighter and told her that I guess I was, even though I was not consciously aware of it.

I am frequently astonished at the ability of the mind to do things like this.

Just thought I'd share this.

I'm feeling some covers tonight. smile

Annie Lennox - Don't let it bring you down (Neil Young cover)
Haunting, but beautiful.

Emiliana Torrini - White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane cover)
The best cover of White Rabbit I've ever heard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XIxaEuXKec

Tom Waits - Time (Not a cover, but there is a wonderful cover of it by Tori Amos)
If you only have time to listen to one of these three songs, make it this one. Seriously.

This is a very emotionally powerful music video by Genesis, with Phil Collins lead singing.

Paul McCartney's "Don't Let It Bring You Down" sounds right on point. Takes about a minute to crank up, though. (I might have posted the lyrics before, but here's the YouTube link.)

Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive!

You've got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

Thanks Victor, UnhappyCamper, and Jude for your posts. I haven't been on here in a while, but have been listening to two of my favorite songs tonight from one of the greatest bands (in my opinion). I had previously posted the first song but that link is broken now so I'm reposting it.

1. Storms-Fleetwood Mac

2. Landslide-Fleetwood Mac (I like the original studio version from the 70s the best)

I love the words of this song it really hits home for me and makes me think. The video is very real for me about the darkness that lives in side, that running is not the way but acceptance of the passed good or bad we can then heal.
I hope you enjoy!! smile

BASTILLE : POMPEII
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90Cw4l-8NY

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes

Eh-eh-o eh-o [8x]

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing

You'll never understand until you've been there.
Been down so much, that all you can manage to do now is sit there.
Thinking back at all the choices that you made to get there.
Pumping a fist to the sky telling god "it ain't fair."
But yo, we ain't there.
How could it be with all this devastation and desperation surrounding me.
So put me in the ground 'cause this life has just been pounded out of me,
The only reason I ain't sleeping now 'cause I got mouths to feed.
Why can't I catch a break?
Why can't I step away and wake up one morning and think that things wont be a mess today.
I gotta break the cycle somehow,
sick of this pain, im sick of living this way.
Okay, I'm done now.
Not having fun now, there's just so many reasons.
Feel as if my soul's a broken puzzle and I'm missing pieces.
It's real easy for you to judge them when you see them,
But you'll never truly understand unless you've ever been there.
I've been there, a place where hope was thin in the air.
If things are gonna get better tell me a 'when' and a 'where'.
Sitting and staring in the mirror, nobody's there,
That I know, feeling so alone and I'm scared that nobody cares.
My nights consist of so many prayers.
I once had so many dreams, I once was going somewhere.
Try and following steps before you start to compare,
Me to you and you don't know me, now you think that that's fair?
I never thought my path would lead me to the point I'm at now.
But before they get up, some people gotta fall down.
Some fall harder than others, they thought they had it all down.
Me, I take these experience and jot them all down.
But how do you cope when you think that hope is nowhere around?
How do you know where to go if you haven't been found?
Yo, I'm saying it's draining living this pain that I'm in.
You're quick to judge me but you haven't been the places I've been, c'mon.

My heart will never feel
Will never see
Will never know
Oh, heart
And then it falls
And then I fall
And then I know

Will never see
Will never know
Home and I know
Playing the deck above
It’s always different
I am the one in love

This is a newer song out on the radio now, and it's a beautiful song with a great, uplifting message. I know there are a lot of guys here who feel less than adequate due to the side effects of the abuse. Hopefully you have some people in your lives that do love you unconditionally, and you should all know that there are many guys on here that truly believe these lyrics about their fellow survivors.

Katy Perry-Unconditionally (not your typical Katy Perry song...also, you need to wait for the 15-second ad)

Here's another new song from Katy Perry's new album. It's a live version and has some pretty powerful lyrics:

"Was full of secrets locked up tight like iron melting"
"I looked in the mirror and decided to stay"

This song by Madonna always made me feel strong in realistic way. Like win or lose . . . I'll always have myself to rely on throughout my life.

-----

"You'll See"

You think that I can't live without your love
You'll see,
You think I can't go on another day.
You think I have nothing
Without you by my side,
You'll see
Somehow, some way

You think that I can never laugh again
You'll see,
You think that you destroyed my faith in love.
You think after all you've done
I'll never find my way back home,
You'll see
Somehow, someday

[Chorus:]

All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
I know I'll survive
I know I'll stay alive,
All on my own
I don't need anyone this time
It will be mine
No one can take it from me
You'll see

You think that you are strong, but you are weak
You'll see,
It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat.
I have truth on my side,
You only have deceit
You'll see, somehow, someday

[Chorus2:]

All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
I know I'll survive
I know I'll stay alive,
I'll stand on my own
I won't need anyone this time
It will be mine
No one can take it from me
You'll see

You'll see, you'll see
You'll see, mmmm, mmmm

To help calm down from triggers or relax to get stuff done; to think after a therapy session or when I am doing volunteer work for a child abuse investigation centre, I love to listen to the newest album from The National- Trouble Will Find Me (2013).

Calm down
Deep breaths
And get yourself dressed instead
Of running around
And pulling on your threads
And breaking yourself up

If it's a broken part, replace it
If it's a broken arm, then brace it
If it's a broken heart, then face it

And hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything will be fine

Hang on
Help is on the way
And stay strong
I'm doing everything

Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything, everything will be fine
Everything

Are the details in the fabric
Are the things that make you panic
Are your thoughts results of static cling?

Are the things that make you blow
Hell, no reason, go on and scream
If you're shocked it's just the fault
Of faulty manufacturing.

Everything will be fine
Everything in no time at all
Everything

Hold your own
And know your name
And go your own way

Are the details in the fabric (Hold your own, know your name)
Are the things that make you panic
Are your thoughts results of static cling? (Go your own way)

Are the details in the fabric (Hold your own, know your name)
Are the things that make you panic (Go your own way)
Is it Mother Nature's sewing machine?

Are the things that make you blow (Hold your own, know your name)
Hell no reason go on and scream
If you're shocked it's just the fault (Go your own way)
Of faulty manufacturing

Everything will be fine
Everything in no time at all
Hearts will hold

Just catching up on the posts, and I like them all. Thanks Weary, Saint, and Jaybro! Never heard of Ray Lamontage before, and never heard that Jason Mraz song.

Here's a new song I recently heard with a good message for those of us who are hard on ourselves. It focuses on the importance of loving ourselves for who we are.

Here's a song I dedicate to all my fellow brothers/survivors on here. Quite a good anthem for this site.

Hope you like the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxMtO7HvXzA

Quote:
Meet me tonight here
I know we're gonna run away
Leaving the old fear
Looking for a new place

I can feel a storm near
The dream won't go away
So meet me tonight dear
And we'll run into a new day

And through it all
I'm on your side now
I'm on your side now

We'll build a fortress
To keep them out
And in a world gone silent
I'll be your sound
And if they try to hurt you
I'll tear them down

I'm always with you now

Be your sound...

We'll build a fortress
To keep them out
And in a world gone silent
I'll be your sound
And if they try to hurt you
I'll tear them down

I'm always with you now...

Sarah McLachlan (with Santana, a fellow survivor): Angel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ojre8-jtfbY

Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
there's always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh a beautiful release
memory seeps from my veins
let me be empty
oh and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight life
and everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lies
that you make up for all that you lack
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe
in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

Ok, never been a blues fan... until now:

"Dislocated Boy"

I've been gone a long time
Lost in the seven seas.
Sail on, don't you come back
Until you learn the birds and the bees.
Who will you find waiting for you,
Squeeze blood in the wine.
Left to call my preacher
And my very lovely wife.

[Chorus 1:]
I said, hey now, knocked down, why'd you do it,
Roll me like a hurricane.
All is a bust and I'm numb, like novocaine.
Who done it, what's up, you said,
Sell me out why don't you boy,
I'm alone, severely broken,
I'm a dislocated boy.

I have cauterized my addictions
And I've suffocated my pride.
Before you and I embarked on
One hell of a ride.
Boy, I've had these blues
Since I been six years old.
But tell me don't you worry
About my very heavy load.

[Chorus 2:]
And I said, knock down, drag out, bar fight,
Knuckles on the floor. and there's shattered glass,
And one hell of a scar.
Broke down and hungry, you said so.
Sell me out, why don't you boy,
I'm alone, severely broken,
I'm a dislocated boy.

All I need is my old guitar,
And I'll play you the best damn blues.
Heavy affections, and I hate to lose.
Thirty-five years ago,
I was born on Robert Johnson's knee
It's all been for you baby.
I'm gonna make it back someday.

[Chorus 1]

So tell me about your working class hero, baby
Tell me 'bout your kin
Mine was born in Mississippi, 'round 1923.
Blue collar flannel shirts
Was my Father's way.
Worked in a factory,
'Til his dying day.

[Chorus 2]

I feel like adding some more...I swear most of Aaron Lewis's songs are like he is living in my head:

Aaron Lewis - Anywhere But Here
This road is going nowhere
And these, these shoes are worn too thin
There's always should-haves where I'm going
There's always could-haves where I've been.

And all the things that I've said
And the road up ahead don't mean nothing don't mean nothing
And the things that I've done and the man I've become disappear
I wish I was anywhere but here.

There's always footsteps from behind me
Why don't they ever read the writing on the wall
And all the time I've spent rewinding
It might mean nothing, it might mean nothing at all

And all the things that I've said
And the road up ahead don't mean nothing don't mean nothing
And the things that I've done and the man I've become disappear
I wish I was anywhere but here.

The bed next to me is empty
Just like the, the shell I'm still trying to fill
The things put in life to tempt me
They won't ever, they might break my will

And all the things that I've said
And the road up ahead don't mean nothing don't mean nothing
And the things that I've done and the man I've become disappear
I wish I was anywhere but here. Wish I was anywhere but here.

And another:
Aaron Lewis - Vicious Circles

If I could walk on water, like Jesus did before,
If I knew all the answers, to keep you coming back for more,
If I could paint a picture, and then cut off my own ear,
If I chose all the right colors, would this just disappear?

Because, we run in vicious circles,
Until we're, dizzy with disdain,
And there's, miles and miles between us,
Yet we still remain,

If I could write a poem, and find the perfect words,
And then put them all to music, just so my voice gets heard,

Because, we run in vicious circles,
Until we're, dizzy with disdain,
And there's, miles and miles between us,
Yet we still remain,

So if I could walk on water, like Jesus did before,
And if I knew all the answers, I'd keep you coming back for more,

Because, we run in vicious circles,
Until we're, dizzy with disdain,
And there's, miles and miles between us,
And yet we still remain,

We run in vicious circles,
Until we're, dizzy with disdain,
And there's, miles and miles between us,
Yet we still remain,

Yet we still remain

This song just bravely puts it out there

Fun Boy Three's "Well Fancy That."

You took me to France
On the promise of teaching me French,
We were told, to assemble, to meet up at 10,
I was 12 and naive,
You planned out our route
I sat in your car, my suitcase in the boot,
On the M1, and the A1, until we reached Dover,
Through passport control, you pulled your car over
On the liner, we stood on the deck, we left port,
My first time abroad,
A school trip to Fance,
Well fancy that,
A weekend away to parle Francais,
Well fancy that

We found the hotel, checked in to a room and unpacked,
It had been a long day, you said "let's hit the sack",
As I changed, I could feel your eyes watching me,
I crept into bed, you pretended to read,
The lights went out, I fell asleep,
Woke up with a shock, and your hands on me,
I couldn't shout, I couldn't scream,
Let me out, let me dream,
I turned onto my side,
I laid there and cried,
On my first night in France,
Well fancy that,
You terrified me, I just wanted to sleep
Well fancy that

Morning came, light shined through,
I left France, I arrived home,
The hedge that you dragged me through
led to a nervous breakdown,
If I could have read, what was going on inside your head,
I would have said, that I was blind to your devious mind,
There's no excuse, but your abuse, and the scars that it leaves,
Where do you draw the line,
On school trips to France,
Well fancy that
you had a good time
turned sex into crime
well fancy that

And this one has long been a part of my journey with this MS stuff and my own issues surrounding it. ( May have posted this before long ago.)

Matchbox Twenty's Bent

If I fall along the way
Pick me up and dust me off
And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk

If I need some other love, then
Give me more than I can stand
And when my smile gets old and faded
Wait around I'll smile again

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just hold me and then
Oh, just hold me again

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

If I couldn't sleep, could you sleep?
Could you paint me better off?
Could you sympathize with my needs?
I know you think I need a lot

I started out clean but I'm jaded
Just phoning it in
Oh, just breaking the skin

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

Start bending me, it's never enough
As I feel all your pieces
Start bending me, keep bending me
Oh, until I'm completely broken in

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just touch me and then
Oh, just touch me again

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me will let them
Without understanding
Here I go there again

Can you help me I'm bent
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Yeah, you're breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

Since I've been reviewing my time with burns and self-injury from years ago while in a safe space now (posted a poem "Flame On" about that earlier in the month), found this song which I downloaded on itunes.

Sleeping with Sirens' "Fire"

Yeah...
Yeah...

You made up your mind
Right before the sound can move
Softly from your lips
You leave behind
A choice which once before you thought you could not resist

You give what you have when you
Decide that you
Keep burning like fire,
It's burning you down

Sometimes they say this should feel something like fire
'Til it burns you and you can't,
No, you can't remain the same
Stay the same, stay the same, stay the same
I can't change

You're losing your light,
Everything that was yours just does not exist
So don't even try to say
Sorry for the things in life you might have missed

You give what you have when you
Decide that you
Keep burning like fire,
It's burning you down

Sometimes they say this should feel something like fire
'Til it burns you and you can't,
No, you can't remain the same
Stay the same,
Although you know
They say this should feel something like fire,
No, I can't change

Do what you wanna do
Keep building it higher,
Keep burning it down
You lose who you are when you
Keep burning like fire
Like it's all around

What do you have to prove
I'll die for you
Keep burning like fire
It's burning you down

Sometimes they say this should feel something like fire
'Til it burns you and you can't,
No, you can't remain the same
Stay the same,
Although you know
They say this should feel something like fire

'Til it burns you and you can't
No, you can't remain the same
Stay the same
Stay the same
Stay the same

Lyrics:

Though written for a different context, think this song can be interpreted from the notion of to one's "inner child" when recovering from CSA.

Nick Lachey's - What's Left of Me lyrics -

Watch my life pass me by in a rearview mirror
Pictures frozen in time are becoming clearer
I don't wanna waste another day
Stuck in the shadow of my mistakes
Yeaaahhh

Cause I want you and I feel you crawling underneath my skin
Like a hunger like a burning
To find the place I've never been
Now I'm broken and I'm faded
I'm half the man I thought I would be
But you can have what's left of me

I've been dying inside
Little by little
Nowhere to go going out of my mind
And in endless circle
Running from myself until
You gave me a reason for standing still

I want you and I feel you
Crawling underneath my skin
Like a hunger like a burning
To find the place I've never been
Now I'm broken and I'm faded
I'm half the man I thought I would be
But you can have what's left of me

Falling faster
Barely breathing
Give me something to believe in
Tell me it's not all in my head

Take what's left of this man
Make me whole once again

Cause I want you and I feel you
Crawling underneath my skin
Like a hunger, like a burning to find a place I've never been
Now I'm broken and I'm faded,
I'm half the man I thought I would be
You can have all that's left
What's left of me

I'm been dying inside you see
I'm going outa my mind, outa my mind
I'm just wandering in circles all the time
Will you take what's left
Will you take what's left
Will you take what's left of me
Just running in circles in my mind
Will you take what's left
Will you take what's left
Will you take what's left of me
Take what's left of me

Here is a song that came on while I was driving to the office this morning. I bought the cassette when it was released in 1987. I was fifteen years old and away from home in my sophomore year at boarding school, so I introduced a new and distant audience to a little bit of Georgia alt. music. CSA was two years behind me and outwardly I was doing reasonably well. Inside, I still wrestled with demons. All the same, the song was timely. This is probably NOT what you think of when you think 80's music.

Thanks Atari and Suwanee for your posts!

Reposting this song as I heard it the past week, and realized that the old link was broken.

I think we all would like to have less drama in our lives, and this song really speaks to many of us guys.

Here are a few live very powerful live versions of some songs I've posted before. I would recommend listening to the radio version first with the lyrics, then watching the live performance. I think both of these songs speak to the difficulties of self-acceptance regarding our CSA or other struggles some may have on here.

Anouk - Lost

If roses are meant to be red
and violets to be blue
why isn't my heart meant for you
my hands are longing to touch you
I can barely breath
starry eyes that make me melt
right in front of me

lost in this world
I even get lost in this song
and when the lights go down
that is where I'll be found

this music's irresistable
your voice makes my skin crawl
innocent and pure
I guess you heard it all before

mister inaccessible
will this ever change
one thing that remains the same
you're still a picture in a frame

lost in this world
I even get lost in this song
and when the lights go down
that is where I'll be found
I get lost in this world
I get lost in your eyes
and when the lights go down
that is where I'll be found

yeah yeah

lost in this world
I get lost in your eyes
so when the lights go down
am I the only one

Oh oh

Anouk - I don't wanna hurt
http://youtu.be/bNvwkyKQiH0

We're breaking things we can't repair
and none of us will take the blame
No, nothing can be done this time
All the memories that we've made
I've threw them all away
There's no need to talk it over

Don't let me get you down
Let's just move on
I am setting you free

'Cause I don't wanna hurt no more
No, I don't wanna make you go through one more rainy day
No, I don't wanna hurt no more
Strange enough I always knew
I'm taking off today
Don't wanna hurt no more

The darkness you left in my soul
And do we know how much we've lost?
Will the moon be shining as bright as before?
And as I'm singing this song
the tears well up in my eyes
And I will always wonder
why I will never have
the life I wanted
Now I'm letting it go

'Cause I don't wanna hurt no more
No, I don't wanna make you go through one more rainy day
No, I don't wanna hurt no more
There's not much more to say
'Cause it's too late now
I won't hurt no more

So I wait 'til morning comes
You made it clear that it has been only pain loving me
The things that we won't do for love
I am setting you free

'Cause I don't wanna hurt no more
I don't wanna make you go through one more rainy day
No, I don't wanna hurt no more
Strange enough I always knew I'm taking off today

I am letting you go...

Anouk & Kane - My best wasn't good enough
http://youtu.be/oVDUK6h_BgQ

Let's say I'm feeling better
Let's say I'm feeling fine
Let's say I gave you all I had
And now I'm out of time
And my best wasn't good enough

And now there's time to wonder
Now there's time to heal
Time to let it all come down
But I don't know what I feel

But it aches and it hurts and it burns
Oh it kills me

Tick, tock, you don't stop
You don't fade
You just stay
But I'll do it all again

Tick, tock, you don't stop
You don't fade
You just stay
But I'll do it all again

Now don't you call me baby
Just don't pretend you care
Save your sorry for yourself
When Judas takes you there, oh yeah

Once I really believed
There was nothing out there for the lost and lonely
But a voice in my head kept banging on my heart
Says you're not the only one

But it kills me

Tick, tock, you don't stop
You don't fade
You just stay
But I'll do it all again

Tick, tock, you don't stop
You don't fade
You just stay
But I'll do it all again

Anouk - The Dark
http://youtu.be/483d50h5HH0

I'm walking in the park
And I'm talking to the dark
But there ain't nobody listening no
My heart has turned to stone
When I found myself alone
Now all I do is whisper to the dark

Yeah
yeah

There's only so much you can take
You've gotta to give yourself a break
But I don't think you're listening no no no no
If you're gonna take it all so hard
You gonna tear yourself apart
I can understand you miss him in the dark

oh oh oh
Yeah, teach your heart how to sing get the courage again now
Yeah, take the 10:50pm train to the city
Yeah, I had a chance for romance so I do it again now

If love is no longer being served
You've got to leave the table
Mister aznavour told me, merci beaucoup
Though I miss him, got to let go
Though I miss him, got to let go
Let it go

It's about that time to leave it all behind you
You don't want to but life is passing by you
The hard knocks, got you twisted like dreadlocks
Catalogue your dark and set some new marks
I understand your body's filled with hesitation
Trust me it's gonna be a whole new situation
Turn this page I guess you know what to do
Rise up like phoenix I'm bringing out the beauty in you

Yeah, teach your heart how to sing get the courage again now
Yeah, take the 10:50pm train to the city
Yeah, I had a chance for romance so I do it again now

oh no no no
come on come on come on
(x 4)

oh yeah oh yeah

Anouk - It's so hard
http://youtu.be/VF3GYSZk3Uc

I'm just thinkin' about the child in me,
That I'm sometimes feeling inside
And I'm figuring out just what it is
That makes me feel so small

Is it you, that hurts me when I give myself
Every day and every night
Am I too blind to see that it doesn't work out
Did I really ask too much of you baby
Do you mean to tell me that's the way it is
Do you mean to say

It's all so hard, It's so hard
It's all so hard, It's so hard

As I search for an answer, I see the clear blue sky
And I know that you're the one to blame
And I feel so naïve
When you say that our love to you was just a game
I dream, my dream, I'm sane, I'm insane
Oh, please don't, please don't speak to me that way
Do you mean to tell me that's the way it is
Do you mean to say

It's all so hard, It's so hard
It's all so hard, It's so hard
Damned it's so hard, why you're so hard
Why you're so hard, It's tearing me apart

Anouk - Break down that wall
http://youtu.be/ziuc-ZHLSok

Baby why are you so sad?
What's the thing your running from?
Caught in the red light.
As if money is the cure

Is this your only way to survive?
Are you trying to get even with the past
What happened to the dreams you had?
I think it's time for you, to
Show them you are able.
To leave without saying one word
I know it won't be easy, baby
But i will run with you

Cause every night has a day
Every wish has a prayer
Don't loose your faith
And I'll be holding your hand
Cause it's never too late
There's someone who needs you

So break down that wall, baby
There's a new world out there waiting
Just tear down that wall girl
Run away and don't look back
Breakdown that wall
Breakdown that wall
There's someone who needs you

Lady, it's your turn now
Just walk the streets with your head op high
Oh, baby doesn't that feel right
Put a big smile on your face, walk on straight
Yeah, tell the motherfuckers they were wrong
Isn't this your sweetest revenge?
Feels good he! I told you so

Cause every night has a day
Every wish has a prayer
Don't loose your faith
And I'll be holding your hand
Cause it's never too late
There's someone who needs you

So break down that wall, baby
There's a new world out there waiting
Just tear down that wall girl
Run away and don't look back
Breakdown that wall
Breakdown that wall
There's someone who needs you

baby
baby
oh

So, break down that wall, babe
Break down that wall babe
There's a new world out there
Tear down that wall babe
Run away, run away, run away
Breakdown that wall
Breakdown that wall
Cause I need you

Don't know how I forgot this one:

PETER GABRIEL--"DIGGING IN THE DIRT" © 1992
Something in me, dark and sticky
All the time it's getting strong
No way of dealing with this feeling
Can't go on like this too long

This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you

Don't talk back
Just drive the car
Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don't say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around
This is for real

Digging in the dirt
Stay with me, I need support
I'm digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
Open up the places I got hurt

The more I look, the more I find
As I close on in, I get so blind
I feel it in my head, I feel it in my toes
I feel it in my sex, that's the place it goes

This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you

Don't talk back
Just drive the car
Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don't say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around
This is for real

I'm digging in the dirt
Stay with me I need support
I'm digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
Open up the places I got hurt
I'm digging in the dirt
Stay with me I need support
I'm digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
To open up the places I got hurt

music is my lifeline sometimes. my T suggested that it might be a good idea to create a "Survivor Playlist." i procrastinated for quite awhile. now that its complete, it has become the soundtrack of my recovery process. i just wanted to share a few of my favorites. i dont like to get distracted from the message im supposed to receive by the one that they want to give me. so i have not posted links to "official" videos. the only exception is "these times." i find the video very moving.

without further ado. my humble offerings to the collection are below.

Good posts, everyone! It's amazing how much a song can speak to you, especially when you're hurting. I wanted to add "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" by Jim Steinman, performed by Meat Loaf on "Bat Out of Hell II-- Back Into Hell." Music has always been my own personal escape and way of handling upsetting things (including those things that brought me to MS) so this one sums up more of my life than I care to admit.

You can't run away forever
But there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start
You want to shut out the night you want to shut down the sun
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart

Think of how we lay here together
We've been listening to the radio so loud and so strong
Every golden nugget coming like a gift from the gods
Someone must have blessed us when he gave us these songs

(chorus)
I treasure your love
I never want to lose it
Well you've been through the fires of hell
And I know you have the ashes to prove it

I treasure your love
I wanna show you how to use it
You've been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know you have the scars to prove it

But remember everything that I told you
And I'm telling you again that it's true
When you're alone and afraid and you're completely amazed
To find there's nothin' anybody can do

There's always something magic
There's always something new
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through

The beat is yours forever
The beat is always true
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through
For you

(Instrumental break)

Once upon a time was a backbeat
And once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hold onto a chorus you can get through the night

(to chorus)

But remember everything that I told you
And I'm telling you again that it's true
You're never alone 'cause you can put on the 'phones
And let the drummer tell your heart what to do

There's always something magic
There's always something new
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through

The beat is yours forever
The beat is always true
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through
For you

Anyone else besides me ever spend hours at night driving around and crying, and being held together by nothing but your favorite songs?

Bob

This one has great lyrics for the likes of CSA and this site IMO. Angst with a touch of hope.

The Healer (The Chameleons) released 1990

Here comes the sun
Calling out to everyone
Here comes the sun
Falling down on everyone

Here comes the moon
Her shadows come to swallow me soon
Here comes the moon
Her shadows come to swallow me soon

It's alright
You're not the only one.

There go my fears
Running on a river of tears
There go my fears
Running on a river of tears

Here comes the pain
Here comes the pain
The hurting again and again
And again and again

It's alright
You're not the only one

So I got to thinking
Perhaps I should think about staying
At least for a moment or two
I'm feeling shakey
But I'll be ok
I just don't know what to say
I don't know what to do
Please
You can take this pain away
Please
You can take this pain away

It's alright
How many can make you cry?

Here comes the rain
Here comes the rain
Flushing all the filth down the drain

Here comes the sun
Falling down on every one
Here comes the sun
Calling out to everyone

Bob,
I've done that, but it's been a while. I thought it was my own kwirk. A dozen years ago I used to drive out to a large bridge in my area, the "Thomas-Vincent Bridge" near San Pedro, Calif. and drive slow with my windows down. It's high above the bay waters and I could see city lights for miles around at the top. I felt like I was flying.

30 years ago I used to drive to the mountains to sit in the dark and cry.

Wow, Keith! I've been over that same bridge a zillion times (I'm from Huntington Beach, just down the coast.) It always freaked me out, though, especially at night or when it was windy. My late-night cry haunts were from Huntington down to Dana Point and through the wilds of South Orange County. Great roads to drive/cry on, at least after 10 pm. I knew I couldn't be the only one!

Will, it's cool to know the story behind your avatar. And I really like the song. (You just introduced them to an even more distant audience) I've been listening to a lot of 80s music while I've been studying recently and you are right, it really doesn't say 80s. It's quite different, in a good way. (I got quite obsessed with Roxy Music. Probably because they have a song on one of the radio stations in GTA Vice City, which was the first game me and my dad played when we got a computer.)

These are my contributions to the thread.... This is a guy from Iceland, musically I don't think the song is awesome, but I really liked the lyrics.

I always loved this song, but after I saw them perform it live I loved it even more. Even the name, Addict With a Pen, it kind of says something to me.

Ok, since I've accidently started a water theme I'll add this. I got pretty obsessed with Frank Ocean last year. I guess the song is about love? But I always wondered what it was he was swimming from. For some reason all the youtube videos of this suck. This is the least bad. I really like everything on his Channel Orange album.

I also wanted to add (since I made this all about water) that I found that listening to rain sounds is very relaxing and helps me sleep. I actually prefer ones with thunder, but I know not everyone likes that. I downloaded some tracks from Spotify, but youtube probably has tons too. Might be worth a try for anyone who has trouble sleeping.

Heard this song again this morning, and finally read the lyrics. Good stuff.

"Head Full Of Doubt / Road Full Of Promise"
The Avett Brothers

There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

When nothing is owed or deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected
If you're loved by someone, you're never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light
And in the fine print they tell you what's wrong and what's right
And it flies by day and it flies by night
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

Sometimes I get depressed that I don't work, and really probably never will again (at least not a real career kinda job). Being on disability can be kind of depressing, having mental health issues is depressing. But this song always makes me feel better, and this ukulele cover of the song is even better.

Thank God It's Monday
by NoFX (Covered by Jordan D White)

Monday is my favorite time of year

I'm gonna tell you what I really think I like about Mondays
Cause they feel like Saturdays
When you don't gotta go to work
Every day is a holiday
I wake up when I want to
I do anything I wanna do
Can't wait for Tuesday

I really never liked Fridays (I don't)
I can't do what I wanna do (Like to)
Sold out at the movies (Go out)
Can't eat at the restaurants (Weekends)
Everybody want a good time
But the bar's full of cigarette smoke
I think I'll stay home
I think I'll wait for Monday

I live a 5 day weekend
I gotta year long holiday
Thank God it's Monday
The only place that I gotta go be
Is at the show or on the first tee
Thank God for irony
Nevermind the aggravation, modulation
Gimme another key

I'll tell you why I like Tuesdays (Wednesday)
Cause the're kinda like Christmas (New Years)
Come to think about Wednesdays (Thursday)
Are a little like Hanukkah (Every day is good)
Thursday's Thanksgiving
I'm talking about good living
I'll think I give thanks
Thank God it's Monday
Thank God it's Monday
Thank God it's Monday

Thank God it's Monday
Thank God it's Monday
Thank God it's Monday

Thank God it's Monday

This is a song that has helped me when im down and out and have no hope I hope it will do the same for you.

MUMFORD & SONS LYRICS
"The Cave"

It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

‘Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

‘Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Here's another favorite enjoy.
Bastille
"Flaws"

When all of your flaws and all of my flaws
Are laid out one by one
A wonderful part of the mess that we made
We pick ourselves undone

All of your flaws and all of my flaws
They lie there hand in hand
Ones we've inherited, ones that we learned
They pass from man to man

There's a hole in my soul
I can't fill it I can't fill it
There's a hole in my soul
Can you fill it? Can you fill it?

You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up; let's finish what we've started
Dig them up, so nothing's left unturned

All of your flaws and all of my flaws,
When they have been exhumed
We'll see that we need them to be who we are
Without them we'd be doomed

There's a hole in my soul
I can't fill it I can't fill it
There's a hole in my soul
Can you fill it? Can you fill it?

You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up; let's finish what we've started
Dig them up, so nothing's left unturned

Oooooh
Oooooh

When all of your flaws
And all of my flaws are counted
When all of your flaws
And all of my flaws are counted

You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up. Let's finish what we've started
Dig them up. So nothing's left unturned

Oooooh
Oooooh

All of your flaws and all of my flaws
Are laid out one by one
Look at the wonderful mess that we made
We pick ourselves undone
