Intertwined spiritual journeys coupled by faith.
Traveling smoothly till foothills of changing beliefs.
You chose the flatlands curving south and around.
Me the granite cliffs with its split fractures - skyward bound.

I picked a life perched on lifeís crags and ledges,
Deathís lure beneath forever compelling an upward climb.
You selected roads through marshes and meadows,
With fluttering butterflies and stinging mosquitoes.

Does it really matter the climb or the hike,
If both the hiker and climber gain the other side?
Will we merge blending dissimilarities,
Or our backs the view as we embark on new journeys?

I was asked by a fellow survivor to explain my poem. I had to ask myself: ďHow does one explain a poem?Ē Like the travelers within the sonnet each reader is to select the direction they wish the meaning to go. I wrote this as a question for a friend that I had lost when I left Christianity. We were young and felt our paths had to split, each believing there was no room for either of us to allow this type of diversity. She was very dear to me and Iíve always mourned the loss. Itís been over twenty years sense we last spoke. This weekend my wife looked her up on face book and broke the silence. Yesterday she contacted me via email and we began an intense conversation, as if we had never been apart, about her lifeís journeys and mine. She stayed within the faith (meadows with butterflies) but has been through two painful divorces (marshes with mosquitoes) while I chose to live a life on non-faith (Cliffs) knowing that if Iím wrong an eternal price to pay (Deathís lure beneath). My question now, is with our paths again merging do our difference really matter? They still exist. But now that we are both on the other side, closer to death than to birth will we travel together as friends or separate as we move towards our final destinations.
