Overexposed skin
Blistered and raw
Exposed to the elements
Sunscreen flawed

Should’ve kept sheltered
Protected and unknown
Skins too sensitive
To ever be shown

Conceal from the sun
Disappearing into the shade
Questioning, in time
Will memories fade?

This has some meaning to me on several levels as it seems that it does for you too. Metaphors? Maybe. The last two lines are rather haunting. For me the answer is yes.

So Roger the answer is yes. I have another question then. Is it your memories that fade over time or those of others? confused

Well I think it is my memories. I mean sometimes I can call up a memory, but the sting of that memory is gone. It does not have that pain associated with it that it used to. Some memories had so much sting to them I surpressed them whenever they sought to resurface. I just could not face them. Now, and there are several, when they pop up I no longer mentally flinch at them. They are there, part of my life and while it saddens me to recall them for many reasons, I feel no need to run from them.

Not only the venom but the teeth have been removed from them. I feel them gnawing at my conciousness but they are impotent and cause no harm or hurt. Just regret, perhaps remorse but nothing that would send me to some unhealthy coping mechanism.

I hope that explains it.

Roger

Well said Roger, I admire your recovery.

Early, as we avoid over exposure to abuse or abusive memories, triggers, we heal, the outside. The memories heal slower, much slower.

Actually Roger and Sam the cool thing about poetry is it has different meanings to each reader. I wrote this poem as a result of my "Husband Wife Encounter" post. I was feeling extremely raw and overly exposed to perfect strangers. My fears were not derived from anyone’s replies, no my own demons are extremely adept. They need no help. So I wrote this poem expressing my need to go back into the shadows. So the memories I was questioning if they would fade, weren't mine it was the memories of the men here on MS.

It is interesting that I would go immediately to my memories with that. Of course I had no context other than the poetry but it is my nature I guess to examine myself, to go inward when confronted with such questions.
