Hot winds
blowing sand
that stings my face
scorchning sun
toturing the landscape
unbearable thirst
with no water in sight
Days of stifling heat
nights clear and cold
incandescent moonlight
and thousands upon
thousands of stars
bring a surreal peace
to this barren land
A caravan
in the distance
signs of life
hope of water
I will follow
to see where it leads
Nomadic tents
people of the desert
how they survive
this terrible place
I'll never understand
An oasis
on the horizon
life springing
up from the sand
out of nowhere
there are trees and flowers
The cool fresh water
burns in my mind
how much longer
until I kneel
at the edge
and fill my hands
with life giving liquid
Reaching down
to quench my parched mouth
all I feel
is sun baked mud
what I envisioned
would soothe my thirst
turned out to be
a deceptive mirage
I stagger to my feet
and will journey again
across the dunes
to forage once more
for what I set out to find
the one thing that
constantly eludes me
here in this desert
