Teen Gets 15 Years For Facebook Sex Scam
19-Year-Old Used Site To Blackmail Classmates

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- A Wisconsin teen convicted of using Facebook to blackmail dozens of classmates into sex has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Nineteen-year-old Anthony Stancl of New Berlin showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down Wednesday.

Stancl pleaded no contest in December to two felonies, including repeated sexual assault of a child.

He apologized during sentencing, saying he has learned to understand what his victims went through.

He had faced a maximum 30-year sentence.

Stancl is accused of posing as a girl on Facebook and tricking more than 30 male classmates into sending him naked photos of themselves, then using the photos to blackmail them for sex.

Half the maximum sentence? If no-one wanted to testify, that's better than expected and kudos to the cops and prosecution authorities. Depends how long he will realistically serve if there will also be 13 years of court-ordered monitoring.

Equally disturbing was that they're letting the bomb threat charge get dismissed, the kid clearly wasn't right in the head even before this latest crime.

It links in with that sexting case somewhat that was discussed in another thread - where the fuck were those victims' parents with the lecture about not even giving out your ASL online if you're not sure who you're talking to? Never mind semi/naked pictures.

It's an unsatisfying result. I suppose that means its the right one.

Well to be fair there's an intelligent debate breaking out in the longer posts and thankfully a parent that did have the talk with their kid, and only a minimal amount of victim-blame, possibly because the offender and victims were the same school age maybe. Whatever the reason, it's a good sign.

He was 19 and some of his targets were as young as 15. That is quite a big difference in age if you think about it- but in any case it is the manner of what he did that is quite disturbing- the whole scam and the fact that he did this to over 30 of his classmates- he targeted them.

The volume of photos and videos he collected of underage males is testament to his obsession.

His trickery, coercion, blackmail and carefully thought out premeditated scam is testament to his danger to society.

It is lucky that this guy was stopped because he would have probably just pushed the boundaries further and further and eventually engaged in more sexual acts with people of a range of ages.

In sentencing this guy i would remember that he did not only cause much harm to many people but he also has the potential to cause much more harm- he is dangerous and requires help. It is controversial to talk about potential to cause harm, but i think this case shows the making of a very sick person (although clearly he was already very sick). I hope that he receives help, and hope that the victims receive all the help that they need and want.

I read some of the replies on that thread Mark, i find that often replies on boards like that are infuriating or written in aggressive or knee-jerk ways and are often not very useful to a progressive discussion just by the nature of that kind of walk-through posting. However, some of the replies were interesting and it is always good to see how the general public relate to stories like these- it certainly helps us to understand what we are up against.
I picked up briefly on a comment where somebody said he may have just been a sex addict, and although there may be validity to his addiction to sex (or more so power and control through humiliation) his behaviour was clearly predatory and dangerous to an extreme extent- the planning and premeditation, the power and control he sought, and humiliation he tried to encourage and use to his own benefit. A sex addiction is perhaps a term you could use when somebody looks at porn a lot (so that it impedes on the normal healthy functioning of your life or relationships)- when you target and hurt people for your own pleasure- that is far more than sex addiction- that is abusive behaviour. The fact that this person showed no remorse- at least at first- really shows what this guys mindset was really like.
