Here in the US people are in a frenzy to buy that special gift. To me,
it seems that gift giving has turned into a popularity contest, and
those engaged are going broke.
What is it about this time of year? Some speculate that it is time
for forgiveness. I have played in this part many times... looking for
forgiveness for not being present or in communication with
family/friends during the year; trying to make up time, with a grand
gift, so the loss is forgotten.
Others look at this time as giving to only to be the best as the
next. That somehow I am better than thou because I gave the most
sought after gift and are crushed when a similar gift is not given.
People here say, "Give what you would like to receive". So, what is
it that we really want?
Here is an idea.... Wouldn't it be grand if when we open our holiday
decorations and begin putting them out we discover a box of memories?
A box from Childhood/Adulthood filled with notes from those we love,
from those who have touched our lives, from those who have passed,
from ourselves; just short notes or affirmations of
who we are to our loved ones. To whom we are to ourselves. Even better
knowing that others are
doing the same and finding our notes to them.
Maybe that is why we save our cards from birthdays, anniversaries,
graduations and the holidays. Maybe that is all we need to give, a
bit of ourselves to those we love. Priceless notes in a small box we
visit once a year, given from our most sacred place - Our hearts.
How does this keep us sane? In this season of giving we often forget
the gift of ourselves. We survived; we are still here... giving. It
is in our nature. So why not make a box or two and start filling them
with notes of things we need to remember or be remembered by.
In all of us there is love and who better to give it, especially to ourselves.
You are all under my Tree.
