When I read the various post here I'm often stunned by some of the things that are said here, often just an odd sentence that someone writes that shouts out to me and forces me to shout back "YES !"

So I thought I'd start a "Quote of the week" topic where we can all enter the best quotes that someone else has written and has impressed you that week.

And my personal choice this week is from Spidey, talking about his old fear of becoming a perp.

My choice is from Scot in the 'can i be loved' thread.

Part of reply by Wrangler to a wonderful thread over in the Family & Friends Forum about sex and communication.

Dave

Quote:
At the risk of oversimplification, the commonality in this thread is communication, and I think three channels. Each channel can get blocked by fear, shame, pride, confusion... they are

1. Me-Me.
Can I make some sort of conscious (silent) declaration about how I feel? Or do I just feel intense? It is still pretty frequent that I have trouble communicating my emotions to myself in some intelligible, coherent way.

2. You-You.
See above.

3. Me-You / You-Me.
Supposing I feel fear, and I can think to myself "I feel fear", can I say to you "I feel fear". AND supposing I say "I feel fear", will you actually hear "He feels fear".

There I was reading the posts about teddy bears that Scot started, and I don't know about you guys but it's a personal and emotional subject is teddy bears.

Then Bill said this -

and I just fell about laughing - sorry bill, I couldn't help it. \:D \:D

That's alright Dave, I've been laughed at plenty the last 24 hours.

Like Leosha said in a post awhile ago, nurses and the rest of the people at the hospital like to laugh at the stupid people that come in with stupid injuries. Unfortunately, that was me last night. Tallsteve got a good chuckle out of it as did some of the guys in the chat room last night.

In case you want to know how stupid it was, I got a stick stuck in my throat. And no, I wasn't playing fetch. I just thought I'd stick around for awhile. \:D

Thanks for the mention, Scot, but I have to point out that those words were written by So_Cal_Marc.

I just quoted them although I failed to attribute.

And I agree they are worth highlighting and repeating.

Sex abuse can often be more to do with the abuse of power or influence than actual sex, abusers are usually on a 'power trip' and seeking control over another person, they are so inadequate that other adults see right through them, so they pick on kids.

It reflects my opinion of this site entirely...some of us post, some of us don't - we all help each other even when we don't always realise it.

Love (not just a word) ...Rik

From Mike Lew's, "Victims No Longer."

"The way out of the pain is through it."

That's some of best advice I've ever heard. So simple, direct, but true. We can try to run, numb, etc., etc. from our abuse and the pain. It won't do away. We gotta so through it, face it.

Take it easy,

From Andrei's stunning post -

Quote:
The people who can do the most terrible things in the world, they are lost in the world. Because the world, it works hard to be good for us. They are on outside of the good things in the world. The darkness inside them, it eats them alive, even as they try to have control by hurting others. They are not able to know the warmth of loving someone or being loved. They can see the most beautiful sunset, and instead of appreciating the art of the colors chasing each other in the sky, see only the arrival of night.

I am very new here and it was a bit unnerving even looking over what is on the site, but I hope it is okay if I draw attention to what I thought was a remarkable passage in Glaukos' journal - which is full of remarkable things:

Quote:
I can see the letter in my hand. Dad sees it and looks at me. All I have to do is give it to him. He’s waiting. My arm moves through the dark & the letter is shaking in my hand – please help me. Dad’s hand is on the letter & I feel it sliding away. The paper is cold. I could grab it back & run but I don’t. I want him to know. I have always wanted him to know. Now he does. Nobody can hurt me now. I have just done the most important thing in my life.
I don't blame my own father for what happened to me or for my inability to tell him; it was a different time and I have no memory of any resources to help me, or even of any recognition of child abuse as a problem. But when I see this kind of courage and passion for life I think maybe there is hope after all! I of course hope that my own son never has to come to me with this sort of letter, but if he does I hope the relationship we have built gives him the same sort of trust that I see here.

My quotes are not as deep as most of these:

From the movie Cousins
"I am going to make some chicken salad out of this chicken Sh*t"

From the great Rev. Jimmy Buffett:
"We are all half-baked fruitcakes"
and
"If we could not laugh we would all go insane"

I just live to see other survivors making steps forward, big or little it doesn't matter, just as long as that person is moving forward.

Andrei's moving forward.

This last year, it has been a lot of feelings, not always good, lot of physical pain and sickness, lot of hurt feelings. But there is so much good now too. I feel real, I feel I am real person again, and did not feel that since I am little boy before I leave home.
I just love it.

Such powerful words. What an inspiration!

There is of course things still I must learn and deal with and heal from. But I am an active person in the process, not the passive victim.

Jake was always a big part of these forums, with his dyslexic spelling and unconditional support and friendship towards everyone.

His last post had me in tears, I was so full of rage that Jake died at 21, and full of hope that we can all come to the place was at when he died.
Jake did the work, he was healing, I think he died in peace.

Here's some words from his last posting that deserve reading - often.
Dave

fuck it was freaking beyond hell but it was the past, bad as it was , its past , it happened but it ain't happening now. Don't be scared of it, look at it, know what triggers it, and know that you were the innocent victim of evil, it sucks that there is evil out there, but we had no control over it, it didn't find us cause we were bad or worthless, it just found us for no freaking good reason, if not us it would have been someone else. The why it happened don't freaking matter, the getting better from it does, and we freaking deserve getting better.

This, from Andrei, enlightened me:

Quote:
I think of the word healing, and in some ways, it make sense, and in others, it seem silly to me. Like to survive the past, it is like to have the cold, and then you take the medicine and you do not sneeze or cough no more, so you are healed. I do not know that this thing we all do, this process that we do, that there is definite 'end' to it. Maybe it is more like the alcoholics or such, that they say they are always in recovering, never 'recovered'. Maybe that is us, recovering survivors. However it is, I am happy how it is right now for me. I hope it can be as this for everone some time.
Words to learn from and live by.

Peace and love,

Scot

"A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio." - Goo Goo Dolls, Name

This line in the song has summed up my life ever since I first heard it, and has always remained my favorite song. I've always been a tired song living here on this tired world of a radio.

Then I found this site. And now it's bringing me new meaning:

The tired song is the violation I suffered that keeps replaying in my tired radio (brain).

Now to find the STOP button and let the song rest in peace. My radio sure could use the peace.

I got an email from a survivor friend today, and this is some of what he wrote me -

Quote:
Who out there would cast aspersions at you or me? We're still here. Still alive and breathing after all these years. Damn them to hell who'd say we're not magnificent warriors in our own right. That I can lace my shoes and use toilet paper, that's something. We all should be dead. Indeed,we did die. And came back royally pissed off.
If we look at ourselves, really look hard, then we will see exactly what we have achieved.
Shoelaces and toilet paper are two simple things that we take for granted, have a look and see what YOU have actually achieved.

My quote of the week:

"ON THE ROAD TO ENLIGHTENMENT, NOBODY SHOULD GIVE ANYONE ELSE THE FINGER."

I wrote it myself in reply to Sinking under Bhuddism Anyone? in Spirituality. I probably would have forgotten about, until FTGF said it made a good weekly quote. Now, I think about it everyday. Sorry to toot my own horn, but how often am I going to say somthing profound.

Mike wrote this pearl,

" Man, I've got issues, huh? Sometimes I actually feel sane, and then I write about my head and I feel like a complete wacko. Talking about this honestly makes me think how we're not victims of SA. And just when I think I've escaped the fire swamp, this giant flaming beast comes out, knocks me down, and sets me on fire. I'm laying there smoldering, wondering, Where did THIS come from"?

I think we have all met this many times before,

"And every time a new person signs into this site, that's one more boy that they didn't get...one more boy who is still fighting...one more boy who, no matter how long and how hard the fight,is still determined to win."

Since it's on the members side confidentiality must be respected but this guy really knows how to write.

this is a greaaat idea, i like it a lot,
when i read the subject/topic i instantly knew what to post,
buut its not something that someone on here has said...
its a LITTLE long, not novel length but a couple sentences or so, but so worth it
i know its not something that someonees said, so srry, im breaking the rules, but i think its an amazing thing and i want people to know it,

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude ... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our Attitudes -Charles Swindoll

Josh,

That is an awesome quote. So absolutely true. Glad you shared it. Keep that in mind as you live your life and you'll make it, Bro. You'll be unstoppable even tho you've had all this shit of abuse in your life.

Lots of love,

John

i dont know if you call this a quote..i read a book..one page each day...its from a book of daily meditations for men...helps me focus the start of the day.... every one is real good....i would like to share todays page...the last of the humsn freedoms is to choose ones attitudes----victor frankl.....when we stand and look at a mountain...it looks awesome..majestic.and perhaps imtimidating..to climb the mountain we will need to select a route..which approach will give us success?which will provide a beautiful view? which is safest? what are the rewards and trade offs among the paths available? in our lives..we usually cannot choose the mountain that face us...but we can choose the best paths to approach them...one path may be a very negative attitude it may feel safe like s narrow ptotected passageway....it is precdicatable..but it keeps us cut off from others.....another path may be filled with too many selfindulgent pleasures and never progress in any direction..another path may be hard and include some risks...but it allows us to be in contact with other and to appricate the beauty along the way....when wemake positive choices about our attitudes..although the mountain is challenging...we are liberated to become the kind of men were ment to be........today i will choose friendly attitudes toward myself that will helpme on my journey gee i really need to heed that thanks steve

What a great piece of advice. And so true. As we deal with our abuse issues, lurking in there SOMEWHERE is usually a desperate need to be more gentle with ourselves.

Much love,
Larry

PS: Can you give us the title of that book of meditations for men? It sounds very interesting indeed.

Steve,

Wow. I just checked this book out on Amazon and it has five stars and all top reviews. Plus used copies for as low as 45 cents!

I will order a copy - thanks for the tip. It really looks good.

Much love,
Larry

PS: Anyone else who's interested can get the book through our site so MS gets a cut ... yeah, okay okay, of 45 cents! But of course it's the thought that counts. \:\)

Steve,

Just thought I would let you know that when I tried to order from the USA the shipping costs were too high. So I went to Amazon UK and got a NEW copy for one pence, = less than 2 cents US. \:\)

A wise friend tell to me, as I have been dealing with the loss of my daughter, he tell to me 'I think your life is not to be decided on how much tears are at your funeral, but by how much smiles and laughs we cause in our time before it'. Children who are not abused, or otherwise assualted by violence or injustice are capable of freely expressing all their feelings. In doing so they naturally develop the skills necessary to experience intimacy in healthy ways. They also learn how to establish the boundaries they need that will allow them to feel safe when they go out into the world. We never got to understand what it means to feel safe. We never got to see life without the filtering shades of our abuse blocking out part of the sunlight. While we heard the mirthful laughter of other children on the playground, somehow we knew we could not share in their innocent joy.

How true!

Wow, thanks so much for mentioning me ste, I'm honored.

Thought I'd share this with you all. I know it's not by one of us... but I did put it in a message to philobat, so it technically is a quote on the board....

"We raise boys to live in a world in which they are either winners or losers, grandiose or shame filled, or, in the most extreme cases... either perpetrators or victims, the rapsit or the raped. 'I'd rather be a hammer than a nail,' Paul Simon sings. There isn't a man I have met who doesn't understand the chilling implications of that sentiment. If healthy self esteem is the experience of oneself as essentially worth neither more nor less than others, there is precious little training in the current culture of boys." (I Don't Want To Talk About It, Terrence Real p. 166-167)

We have all been created for greater things...to love and to be loved. Love is love...to love a person without any conditions, without expectations. Works of love are works of peace and purity. Works of love are always a means of becoming closer to God, so the more we help each other, the more we really love God better by loving each other. Jesus very clearly said; Love one another as I have loved you. Love in action is what gives us grace. We pray and if we are able to love with a whole heart, then each of us will see the need in others. Those who are unwanted, unloved, and uncared for become just throwaways in the secular minds of society. That is why we must really make everybody feel wanted.

There is something else to remember....that this kind of love begins at home. We cannot truly give of ourselves to others, what we do not already possess inside our own hearts.
This is very important. If I cannot see God's love inside my brothers and sisters, then how can I see that love in somebody else ? Indeed how can I give it to somebody else ?
Everybody has got some good inside them. Some hide it, some neglect it, but it is there.

BY THE LATE MOTHER THERESA
OF CALCUTTA
