and cracker jacks were a dime a box

and cap hops served at the local drive in restaurant

and it was okay to play army and cowboys and indians

and the phone line had 7 families, all listening in and waiting turns

and we drew our water from a well

and picked the "tater bugs" from the potato plants by hand

and yes, I even remember when my grandma had electricity ran to her house!

I remember when TV shows used to advertise "In Living Color" to show that they were cutting edge and to distinguish themselves from the black and white TV shows.

Remember when writing a report for school meant getting the typewriter out, putting paper in the slot, making sure it was level and even, and typing. If you made a mistake, you couldn't just hit "Delete." You had to get the White-out, dab it on the error, wait for it to dry, line things up again and resume typing. Sometimes the lines wouldn't be even and it would draw attention to the error. If you were lucky enough to get an electric typewriter, you were it.

I've resisted joining this thread because of some type of temporal hangup. the beauty of the "40 year-old mark" is it keeps moving and it just passed me. In other words, this ain't my dad's 40.

I'm sure some of these have been covered in the many responses, but here goes...

A solid state television was kind of a big deal.
No DVR and just a handful of channels meant EVERYBODY came to school the next day talking about the same thing from the previous night's TV lineup.
"Lolly, Lolly get your adverbs here"
I know who shot JR.
Nobody seemed to care if we quoted beer commercials in elementary school.
"Tastes Great" vs. "Less Filling" "I must be on the front row!"
When EF Hutton speaks, everybody listens.
Phone booths, remember those? Calls were a dime, then a quarter--then who cared after that?
AT&T vs. MCI
"You alright! I learned it by watching you!"
"They're heeere..." scared me every time.
While "Saturday Night Fever" had sonething to do with a disco, but Saturday Morning Fever meant cartoons.
If you started watching cartoons early on a Saturday and you were still in front of the TV when Soul Train came on---then you REALLY needed to go outside and play.
Watching the movie "War Games" made me want to be a computer hacker.
The password is "pencil."
An Apple //e in your house was badass.
A single speed BMX Redline PL-20 with Dia Comp brakes, flight cranks, a GT laid back seat post, Araya rims was one tricked out bike.
Car phones and pagers were for doctors and drug dealers.
Flying was more fun in the old jets.
Flying was more fun before 9-11 and the TSA.
The Cold War was still real. Hot war was always possible
"99 Luftbalons" "It's a Mistake"
There was West and East Germany and a wall in Berlin.

Here are some more things I thought of:
* You remember the Bicentennial
* You know who said "I am not a crook"
* You either went for Ginger or Maryann
* You can name the band Paul McCartney was in before Wings
* YOu were afraid to go into the ocean after Jaws
* You remember the Chevette and the Gremlin
* You remember Braniff and Pan Am
* You remember Lew Alcindor, Cassius Clay, Jean Claude Killy and Mark Spitz
* Bell bottoms were in for the first time.

There are a lot more and I've probably forgotten more than I can remember
