I saw the Shawshank Redempton recently from a recovery standpoint and it really changed my entire perspective on the movie. From an abuse survivor:

Andy is in prison for something he didn't do, yet bears the shame throughout (he later says he killed his wife). Throughout, he does whatever it takes to survive, knowing deep inside that he is innocent--pure. In order to survive, he does things he wouldnt have done before being locked in the prison (he helps the warden commit crimes...I acted out sexually. Yet, he always knows that he doesn't belong. Finally, after working through for years, he journeys out of his hole of hope only to find another obstacle...the sewer line. This is perhaps my favorite metaphor. Andy must crawl through shit to get get to freedom. I know in my own recovery, the more shit I crawl through, the more free I become.

Thanks Taz-
The more stories like this there are, the more abused boys and men will reach out for the first time for the help they so desperately need, like we all did at some point..

Give sorrow words: the grief that does not speak
Whispers the o'er-fraught heart and bids it break.
